Roger Federer is within 4 victories of equalling Borg's grass court record.

Asked about Borg's record, Federer said: "Streaks are not important to me. Winning titles is."

Hmmmmm.....maybe the Nadal rivalry ain't so friendly. One could interpret this as a dig.

Truth in point regarding Borg's grass court winning streak; all of Borg's victories, 41 came at Wimbledon. Borg didn't play a lesser grass court event prior to the Big W.

......Or maybe he meant what he said, that winning titles is more important to him than a streak, I doubt he was thinking of Nadal when being asked about that.

Fed answered the question asked of him. No dig IMHO. Nadal has both streak and the FO title.

Didn't Nadal have a similar attitude about his streak?

Yes, he did. Both Fed & Nadal get it. They play for titles, not streaks(this isn't baseball)
The media & ATP have created interest in these streaks. Vilas & Borg had no idea they even won that many clay maytches in a row until they read about it this year.

I saw an interview on German TV with Federer answering the question. To his credit, he pointed to the fact, that Borg won all his grass matches at the big one, Wimbledon.

When Federer wins his 5th Wimbledon in a row, then he can have the record....

Federer stopped Sampras from equalling Borg's record of winning five straight Wimbledons in 2001. Borg called Federer afterwards to thank him. Perhaps now Borg will encourage Sampras to come out of retirement next year to stop Federer from winning his 5th straight Wimbledon? ;)

(Assuming Federer wins again this year, of course.)

Weird thing to say. The record is for GRASS courts not WIMBLEDON courts. Halle is grass, why is this so confusing for some people?
Does beating Gasquet today in Germany make it less of a win? No it's exactly the same result.
Nadals clay streak isn't just at RG, the hardcourt streak includes the whole hardcourt seasons.
Borg may never have even got to 41 wins had he played a warm up event, whose to know?
