Well most people predicted this match-up for the final as soon as the draw came out, and despite the odd surprise on the way, it's happened.
http://www.andbethere.com/2013/01/australian-open-semi-final-summary.html here by the way is my round up of the semis - they couldn't have been more different. I just hope Djokovic isn't too fresh for Murray going into the big one on Sunday...
What do people think Murray has to do to win it? (surely Djokovic is the clear favourite..)

Well I definitely didn't hope for this final but should be a good match. In terms of tactics, Muzza needs to serve like he did today and from there, it's just who can grind it out better

Nobody hoped for this final. I, for one, will be boycotting it.

I assume you don't know the forum rules about posting match spoilers. Wrong sub-forum for this thread.

I suppose I was hoping federer would win it, but couldnt see him getting past djokovic - a murray djoko final for me would always have been the most competitive.
Well no, I wasn't aware of that. Is it possible to repost the thread in the relevant section?

I wanted Federer Djokovic for the rivalry or Murray Nadal for the novelty.

This is the final I was expecting.

The final I was hoping for had Federer in it. After seeing the 5 setter against Tsonga and Murray make the semis comfortably I realize my hopes would not be coming true.

From a fan standpoint, I wanted Roger to beat Murray, but now the final will be more competitive than if Fed had won IMO, so I'm not really sad at all. I wouldn't say I hoped for this, but I'm not complaining that we got it.

I was hoping for this final tbh. Murray and Djokovic are where it's at in men's tennis right now, whether you like them or not.

This is the perfect final. The two best players right now duking it out, what more can you ask for?

I am slightly more of a Djokovic fan than a Murray fan, but I'll be happy regardless of the result.

wanted federer to win because i simply think its more enjoyable tennins to watch, rather than djokovic/murray.
with that being said, i'm still gonna cheer for my man novak comes the monday.

i think, and hope, murray will win it. he seems the better player at the moment and has had the better tournament so far.

i will watch the first set and if it's just defensive grinding, then i'll probably skip the remainder of the match and socialise with friends/play tennis instead. Can't waste 5 hours of my life on a faster version of their warmup...

I was hoping for a Federer v Novak final but these two deserve go be there! To me Fed and Djok produce some amazing matches!

Murray was too good today though he served extremely well and it was tough for Federer to break! It is refreshing to see big serving trouble a legend of the game! It reminded me of last year when Isner served Federer off the court in the Davis Cup!

I fully expected this match up for the final--Djokovic and Murray are the far and away best players at this AO, so one could not ask for a better confrontation.

Djokovic can get on the treadmill and run against most players, but that may be the best way to throw off Djokovic's shotmaking: through pure fatigue, allowing Murray to go for his own finishing points. However, with the importance of the final in mind, one never knows how he (Murray) will handle it.

I reckon the days of him struggling becasue it's a slam final are over. 2 years ago he wouldn't have beaten Federer today - that shows the improvement i think

With the current crop of players, yes, this is logically the final I'd hoped for. The two best players currently on tour offering the best chance of a highly competitive final for the neutral observer.

On a broader scale, you could argue there should be more players that can compete with these two (and Federer) and be able to get to GS finals - but the players simply aren't there at the moment.

I don't think I will be watching this. Maybe I'll tune in after someone has won 2 sets. It's not boycotting or anything, I just don't find it very exciting to see these two play, although it does produce some good tennis.

Assuming you're a tennis fan, surely the admission that they produce good tennis is reason enough to watch? :p
I agree though that it's a shame that no one else seems capable of reaching a major final - on paper ferrer is the next best and he was outclassed

I don't know about hoping but this is definitely the final I was expecting. 2 best players on outdoor hard right now. No ambiguity about it.

I agree that this was the expected final for AustralianOpen2012, but I don't think they're the 2 best outdoor hard-court players on tour right now. I think the best players on outdoor hard-court are Nadal, followed by Djokovic. :p

Maybe but Rafa hasn't played on hard for... a long time. And hasn't won a title on hard since 2010. I think it's a surface where he has to prove himself again. Hopefully he will.

Too bad it's happening for Murray just a few months shy of 26. Before you know it, he'll be struggling with the likes of Tomic and Raonic who are a generation under him.

The only player currently absent that really matters is Nadal. It will be interesting to see what happens, especialy off of clay (as clay dominance would be predictable and anything less means he is finished on any surface) when he returns.

Federer can still compete with Murray, less so with Djokovic, but over time this is likely to only get less and less.

Dissapointed but Federer has been poor barring his Tomic win this fortnight.

This was the most realistic final even thought in may hearts wanted to see Federer Djokovic final with Federer winning.

Hoping Murray comes to play.....and not go to passive mode.

Yes and no - Djoker, Murray is a "big time" final between champions -- lots on the line, most likely a good, intriguing match. Can Murray immediately back up his USO breakthrough, establish himself as a champion, or can Djokovic prevent that and get to 6(!!) Slams. So, yes.

But, also no. It's all so predictable and I already know exactly what a Djokovic-Murray final will "look" like, even if I don't know the result. I can already see the points playing out. In that regard I'd love to see someone different - Berdych, Tsonga, anyone. But, then the chance of the match being good are probably a little less. But, you can't know that unless you see it, and we never get to see it.

There's always been dominant players, or a group of dominant players, but breaks in that dominance used to occur more often - one Slam wonders, surprise finalists, solid second tier players who were able to win or make it to the final more than once, surface specialists who either made the final themselves or paved the way for someone else by upsetting a top player.

You can't be serious. Right this minute the two best hc players in the world are Djokovic, followed by Murray and Fed is currently third best. How can Nadal be the best or second best hc player when he has not won a hc tournament since 2010.

Murray is actually more talented than Djok, this should be a win for him similar to his US Open win. Murray seems to play more intelligently the way he mixes up his shots. He definitely has a better backhand slice. I expect him to be the best player on the planet after this win.

if both djoker and murray play as aggressively as they did in the semis, it should be a good match ; just hope it doesn't become a grind fest 'only'

You are right murray seems better in terms of tennis skills than novak. He should attack more and avoid getting into long rallies. if he recovers and serves like he did against roger he should win this.
