I have to say this about her. She is one of the few players who showed some guts (along with Henin, Clijsters, and Hingis early on) in the Williams sisters era, when pretty much everybody else was mentally soft. I don't even think Maria is that great technically, but she is convinced that she is an elite player and that is half the battle.

In 1994 Sanchez Vicario was in fact the best player in the World, ahead of even Steffi Graf. Graf ended as computer #1 but everyone knew after the U.S Open when Aranxta ended with 2 majors to Steffi's 1 for the year, 3 slam finals to Steffi's 2 (and would end the year 3-2 vs Graf, and with comparable tournament win and W-L stats) that Aranxta was the defacto #1 for the year, computer be damned.

Sanchez was a phenomenal player. Arguably the best defensive player in history, other than maybe peak Venus. An incredible fighter. Had many tricks up her sleeve to pull out to try and win- drop shots, slices, topspins, lobs, sneak forays foreward. Despite not being an offensive juggurnaut and being undersized had weapons with her backhand and volleying skills from her doubles play. In addition to her 4 slams lost some historic finals to Graf.

A whole other league than Sharapova.

I really have to thank Azarenka. It wasn't a great final but it was the right result for the future of the WTA. A Sharpova, Stosur, Li or Kim win would have continued to stifle the new era. But if Kvitova can't play well on hc, Aza looks like she is going to outpace her slam wise 5 years or so down the road.

God I hope so. But how do you know Azarenka is mentally more solid than the previous 4 WTA Slam winners? Don't get me wrong, I like Victoria a lot (she's the most likeable slam winner this side of Clijsters, I think), but isn't she just as inconsistent as the rest of 'em?

From last year to date I'd say Aza has been very consistent both as a solid number 2 and a slam/YEC performer only losing to runner ups and winners. Proves her stability. Only looking at the past 5 slams, she's even done slightly better than Kvitova, if you just regard W=AO, they are neck to neck in slams with W, SF, QF, 4R each until US 2011 where Kvitova lost in the 1st round and Aza only lost to Serena in the 3rd. So long as Aza doesn't retire 5 or 6 times this year. Disclaimer, I just can't like Aza because of her howling but she has 100X more credibility than Woz as real number 1.

Maria Sharapova is one of the highest paid women's athletes in sports history. She has a world-wide appeal. Jealous much? Mother Marjorie knows how much you hate those blonde European women.

    No.

Azarenka used the 2004 Wimbledon Maria model to defeat Maria in the 2012 AO finals.

    Serena is so 2005. Please.

But guess who never made it out of Maria's quarter? At least Maria put herself in the best possible position to win, unlike some fatter, undisciplined girls.

If it were that you weren't some crumb-snatching, coat-tail rider, Mother Marjorie might respond to your idiocy.

You have never been worthy of her, and you know it. Yep, uh-huh. See Samanatha Stosur.

See, this is why the sport of tennis needs a huge filter from crumb-snatchers like that.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario was a great player who made the best out of less-evolved strokes. She deserved to be admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, but she was by no means a phenomenal player in tennis. A Tier IV great at best, along with Venus Williams.

All you men that are spewing hatred for Maria are obviously gay or bisexual. You know what they say about girl-hating men! That is okay with Mother Marjorie because she supports the gay community. You can talk to her, oh, yes you can!

Excuse me your highness but this is purely ridiculous. Ever heard the phrase "not my type" ? Just because a girl is blonde and thin doesn't mean every straight man is gonna go gaga over her. You need to think before you speak sometimes.

Since when it is disrespectful for a man to say a woman is not, in his opinion, goodlooking? Not everyone is attracted to everyone else and freedom of speech allows one to express that view if they choose to do so. If you don't like it its fine, but just because he expresses that view doesn't mean he is gay. That is an insulting leap of logic.

When men, openly and repeatedly attack women (that's pleural) in a discussion group, that is not "straight" behavior. Straight men do not go out of their way to attack women openly. Straight men will be the first to defend a woman who is being attacked.

These barrage of attacks on women tennis players by men in this forum are less than masculine. Deal with it. It was just time that Mother Marjorie called some out on it. Oh, yes, she did!

The logic is simple, but it is lost on some poor souls.

Arantxa was a phenomenal player! She's been in the final of all the slams at least 2 times each! She has defeated Graf 4 times in slam! That's huge. And she's an all-time great claycourt player with her 3 FO titles, 6 finals, 10 SF + all the titles and finals on regular tournaments... Is sharapova an all-time great of anything?

Plus Arantxa leads her Head-To-Head & Serena. What's the Head-to-Head between Sharapova and Serena? :)

Again, ridiculous. Sharapova is an athlete and people are allowed if they choose to be critical of her. It is part of the consequences of being an athlete, its not all sunshine and roses. As for people being critical of her looks, anyone who chooses to pose for a bikini shoot is then subject to the public opinion of her looks, thats how the modeling world functions. Just becuase a man is critical of a woman in any sense does not make him gay, not only is that illogical, but it is insulting and stereotypical to the gay community. I don't understand how it is attacking to be critical of a female atheletes ability at the sport she is playing.

Men are not the only ones critical of femal tennis players on this forum. Are all the women who do it to be labeled to? I don't see you doing that. what about female posters who are critical of male tennis players, is that wrong also? We have freedom of speech in this country, if you don't like what is said, thats fine, you can disagree, but not liking an opinion expressed by someone else does not give you the right to insult their character in any sense.

There is no logic, all I see is you countering insults with more, and worse, insults that are equal to unnecessary character assaninations, and this will me my last reply to this...because I don't feel the need to go into these kind of discussions.

Arantxa is not an All-Time Great. Arantxa doesn't appear on historical lists that would make her eligible in that way. She is a Hall of Fame tennis player. Pam Shriver is too.

Maria is an active player, whose career has not yet ended.

So, you think Arantxa is greater than Serena historically? LOL. That's rich. Know that.

LOL you do realize by saying Sanchez is on par with 7 slam winner Venus Williams you are in fact complimenting her highly. Saying she is on par with Venus is also equivalent to saying she is far greater than Sharapova.

Mauresmo was one of my fav's to watch, esp on grass. She had a great career, did underachieve due to her nerves, but still a great career nonetheless.

Sharapova may be better mentally than Amelie, but I think technically, Amelie is leagues above Maria.

Maria's grit and acomplishments put her above her in the pecking order though.

I will give Maria props for her AO run too, as she came in cold to the event, and played good ball up until the final. She fought like crazy in the Kvitova match and could have a banner year.

Maria has done a lot and achieved a ton, lets not forget how tough it is to win a slam, yet alone 3. But the OP even suggesting 'MARIA's RIGHTFUL SEAT ON THE THRONE OF THE WTA' with a wonky serve and no tactical nouse, is insane.

So Maria never won W again, SO ??

If that's bad that she never won W(according to you) that means your idol(Serena) is even worse at the FO since she hasn't done NOTHING after her 2002. At least Maria made the W final again but Serena never made the FO final. Not to mention Maria is 24, who is 6 yr younger than OLD Serena. Time is on her side...she still has many chances while Serena is over the hill.

Serena has won more majors since Sharapova's last major win, than Sharapova has in her whole career.

You mock Serena and hype Sharapova up, how can Maria's rightful seat be on the 'throne of the WTA' when she was SLAUGHTERED BY WORLD NUMBER 169 Serena, just 6 months ago, barely picking up games.

Serena out of prime has had the type of on court success Maria likely will never have now, even though she should be in her prime years, and dont give her the shoulder as an excuse, she had her surgery back in 2008.

Its safe to say that Maria has many, many, many more chances in the sport of tennis at the grand slam events than the ever-absent, old and tired Serena.

Mother Marjorie fully expects Serena will have one of her assistants create some hideous retirement smock that will allow for expansion of her waist and hips. Serena has stated she doesn't like to work-out, so you can imagine how spread-out she will become over the next few years. Maybe they'll give her a part on that television show, "The Biggest Loser"?

LOL at the always worthless and Serena hating TMF mocking Serena for only winning the FO once. Maria has NEVER won the French Open. Serena is ahead of Maria at every venue:

Australian Open- 5 titles to 1
French Open- 1 title, in contention almost every year vs 0 finals, in contention 1 year but ousted in semis by unheralded shock winner.
    Wimbledon- 4 titles to 1
U.S Open- 3 titles, 5 finals, to 1 title, only final

Comparing Maria to Serena is like comparing a donkey to a race horse.

Here is where Maria stands in her generation as of present:

    Serena 13 slams

    Justine 7 slams
    Venus 7 slams

Clijsters 4 slams, 3 WTA year end Championships
    Davenport 3 slams, 4 year end #1s

Sharapova 3 slams, 1 WTA Championship, 0 year end #1s
Mauresmo 2 slams, 2 WTA Championships, 2006 Player of Year

Kvitova and Azarenka will be flying past in a year or two, dumping her even further down the totem poll. Notice where Serena is and Maria is, there is such a long road and so many others between them, that Serena couldnt see Maria way there behind here with even her strongest telescope. That is just in the last 8 years or so to boot.

Ohhh...you are so bitter! So bitter that the old, fat one is on her way out while Maria is once again rising, making it to Grand slam finals.

Serena couldn't even make it to the quarterfinals to meet Maria at the AO. Epic fail, wouldn't you say?

    Oh, Hector Projector!

Mother Marjorie finds it very, very interesting that a "man" spends so much of his time, repeatedly talking so negatively about young, female athletes on a discussion board. In fact, Mother Marjorie thinks you've got tons of sugar in your tank. Only a gay male would talk so negatively about a woman the way you do.

Mother Marjorie's gay friends have read some of your posted articles and are convinced you are their family. One said, "...that perp is gayer than Mr. Gay McQueerly."

Serena could walk away from tennis tomorrow and it wouldn't matter. She is 30, has a fantastic career. She will be rememberd for her on court successes.

Maria will be remebered for her bikini body and obnoxious grunt, which for a Maria fan/stan must be a bitter pill to swallow. Oh well at least she can spend all her money in the future knowing she trained hard for all those years, blood, sweat, tears et al, to have her legacy as being on Maxim's 'Top 20 Hottest Beach Bodies Of The Noughties'.
