"it's" is the abbreviation of "it is" -- as in "it's the first Slam of the year."

"its" is the possessive -- as in "the racquet's weight definitely affects its maneuverability."

A lot of people use "it's" as the possessive, an easy mistake to make because (apostrophe)(s) usually indicates the possessive, as in the second example above.

An easy way to check: read/say it's as it is, and see if it makes sense.

Ah, the vagaries of the English language...

"You're" correct about the number of quotation marks in "your" well thought out thread. :)

    Some others to consider:

(the following are all re-printed courtesy of Rabbit's: "The Magnolia State Conversational Primer")

    "Z'ackly" as in "Exactly"

    "Y'all" as in "you all"

    "Ain't" as in "Ain't not"

    "Gon'na" as in "going to"

    " 'shine" as in "moonshine"

"Shotgun weddin'" as in "Shotgun Wedding"

    "She'll" as in "She will"

    "Sheep'll" as "Sheep will"

"B'aaaa" as in "Not tonight Rabbit, I've (I have) a headache."

    OTHER (non-provincial) EXAMPLES:

    "Doesn't" for "does not"

    "You're" for "you are"
    ("your" = possessive pronoun)

    "It's" for "it is not"

    "I'm" for "I am"

    "Iams" for cats"

    "Can't" as in "cannot"

    "They're" as in "they are"
    ("their" = possessive pronoun)

    "Contractions" as in "Birthing Centers"

"Ten o'clock" is actually the contraction for "ten of the clock."

    Today's "contractional" brain-tease~

Question: What's Irish and stays outside all summer long?
    Answer: Paddy O'Furniture
(not to be confused with "Patio Furniture")

Keifers, useful remark, especially for me. I'll necessarily correct myself in my future posts.

Meantime, beginning from 2006 we'll have not only 1-st racquet of the world but also Nobel Prize Laureate, they also took a decision to join to the forum in clarifying who is the GOAT.

    There
    Their
    They're

PLEASE make sure you use the correct one.

Also, "alot" is NOT a word! It's "a lot". Two words.

It doesn't have to be English, just like some members of this board(read: YOU) aren't even from planet Earth!
