I love this interview, from a couple of reasons that lead to 2 questions:

1- Lendl gives some interesting insights about Andy and how he helped him. Question: was Lendl so damn important for Andy to win the US Open (I think so)

2- (most important point) It seems that at 0:10 in the video Lendl is smiling that is an event as unique as Murray winning the US Open...

I think he is smiling or maybe a Gioconda effect. Am I right?

i don't know how Lendl interacts with Murray but on the video interviews, he appears to be a very nice person/coach.

I agree, I think he plays the role of the tough guy, but he is nice. Well not talking about when he used to try to decapitate people with passing shots, but that was also part of the game.

Definitely an interesting character. And a good on for the game.

haha. It seems weird to see Lendl smiling and even telling jokes. Obviously looks to be very happy about the win(s).

I think Lendl has taught Andy to tune out distractions including his fear of being seen working too hard when the going got tough on court, seen digging it out with massive amounts of "ugliness" in order to win any match, that which is needed to become a top guy. . . Andy comes from a place where one seen striving "too" hard to improve his station is allegedly considered an individual acting somewhat improperly. Lendl told him that was b.s. and had you grown up in the eastern bloc your mind would be freer of such baggage. Now Murray seems at peace in big matches, more so than before. Now he seems to be following a plan involving the riding momentum that he thinks he will be able to influence eventually. I can almost see nowadays his mental wheels plotting a course of successful resolution across five available sets, something both Federer and Rafa always evoked.
Andy is a big match player now!

    Agreed.
And his lustre as a player has been enhanced by coaching Murray to his first major.

According to Murray, Lendl jokes REGULARLY. He is a lot more lay back than people realise. Maybe Lendl is just really serious during matches but totally different overall.

Lendl caught David Letterman out while a guest on his show. Something about Dave gently teasing Lendl one minute, the next Lendl cooly seeing his way clear, in the course of a Letterman-led conversation, to mention Letterman's speeding ticket that he got while driving through New Caanan CT. . .and Dave was red in the face, and I knew then Lendl was a tricky customer because Dave's pretty slick himself.

Lendl has made the psychological difference, but doesn't deserve all the credit by any means.

He may have shown Andy what and how to do it, but Andy was the one who had to do it.

Lendl was a fantastic mentor, and showed Andy the right ways, but a teacher is only as good as their pupil and the hard work was put in by Murray.

It sucks a bit that Lendl will be considered the difference-maker (rather than Murray taking the "difference" credit). But then again, Murray isn't a glory-hound, and probably won't care.

Lendl was an animal on tour (in an era of out of control egomaniacs) and he played brutal mind games with opponents in the locker rooms and on court. The anecdotes from other players are legendary. He may have mellowed a little with age but I'm pretty sure that what he's providing Murray is a large can of harden the f**k up (mentally) and stop whinging to mum - and it's working. Good on both of them. It's great to watch a player grow up on the big stage. I'm not crazy about Murray's style but I love what he's been able to do.

I always thought a big mistake Murray made was being too friendly with Djokovic pre 2011.
I'm sure Djokovic learned more from being Murray's practice partner than the other way around.
Very naive and silly and that is definitely one thing Lendl would not tolerate.

That video is really interesting.. . I can almost see Borat in there.

Also, the book he is promoting, I have a copy of that somewhere. It was a great book.

Lendl showed him what is required to be a champion and maybe just got him to grow up a bit.

Lendl is extremely good at interviews. He looks so eager to answer each question. He is so full of information and an eagerness to inform the viewers.

Lendl is a smart man, he knew that certain technologies would be employed to please the most powerful person in the world(Queen Elizabeth) in her jubilee year. Murray winning the Olympics and the US Open was a lock for me. All that has to be done via satellite is certain frequencies are locked into certain players and one player gets stronger, the other weaker.

Murray, like Djokovic last year, will go back to his regular sub tier one self in 2013.

I felt Murray was the better player right after the middle of the 4th set. Was very happy to see Lendl point out the same and that he felt confident Murray will be the winner going into the 5th.

To be honest, Lendl just showed up at the right time. After a year where Andy reached 3 semis and a final, the odds were in his favor to win a grand slam.

Lendl may have helped him get over his baby tantrums, but that was also bound to happen soon enough.

Lendl is the ideal match for Murray. I hope they stay together. I'm sure Murray agrees right now :) after surviving a marathon match against the real #1 and destroying in straights the official #1. Good summer for Andy!
