Just out of curiosity J-Roger, what's your ranking and on what level? I've read a bunch of your posts and now am curious what level you play at? Are you a college player, touring pro, weekend junkie?

    No disrespect intended, genuine question.

I was hurt and missed college because I blew out my shoulder at 17 years old. Couldn't lift my arm higher than paralell to the ground for 6 years.

Not good enough to be a touring pro, and more serious than a weekend junkie.

I'll play 15-20 Mens open tourneys in 08, and my goals are top 5 in my section and top 50 in the country.

To be fair, at that time I was really trying to play like a grinder and keep the ball in forever and run all day. My forehand technique was not real good, for sure. However, even back then I was beating some good players.

Ive improved alot since then, hitting more aggressive along with the consistency, and the forehand form is different, but it is still a straight takeback. There is nothing wrong with a straight takeback and poses alot of advantages. Regardless, I can groundstroke with anyone. That may sound full of it but its true from my experience and what ive been told. Wish I had more recent videos for you. Either way, to say it looks bad to you and not look at what the ball is doing and where it goes is ignorant. Unless you too are beating top 25 division 1 players, Im most certain I would "kick you butt".

Well, he did say it looked bad and was funny, which doesnt make much sense. Secondly Im in a poor mood having been injured, through surgeries, and not on a court in 6 months, and I may never be the same player as I was again

TonLars, don't feel bad about what people on the boards say about your technique. Most here are clueless about how to play tennis well. The same people that criticize you criticize the pros too. Just look at all the garbage in the Pro Players section. To put it another way, if you showed these people a picture of Scarlet Johansson they'd say she's ugly because she's got a pimple on her butt.

Sorry to hear your recovery isn't going as well as you hoped. But remember, even if you don't come back as good as you were before, you're still better than 99% of the the people out there. I wish I had your strokes.

Me lousy photographer? Ok, possible. I have to check the shutter speed on that one but I think it was blurry due to motion, I think the shutter speed was either 1/400 or 1/640 that day.

    Let me check.

OK.. I checked. I gave you the originals and don't have copies. However, the shutter speed that day was 1/1000 so it looks like the picture was out of the focus zone. You've cropped on the hand and I was focusing on the torso, due to the limited depth of field is was out of focus. I don't have the EXIF info but guessing total of 3.5 feet of focus which would make your grip at the end of your long arm, out of focus.

Another possibility is that it was my first day second day with the 40D and the camera was focusing on the back fence in AI Servo mode.

Glad to be hearing from you T.

    How is your rehab going?

    Range of motion?

Keep us posted, and you got a heap of well wishes comming your way from me.

Edit: Just read the update in your thread. Keep at it. When I hurt my wrist I literally didn't have the strength to turn the ignition key in a car. It slowly kept getting stronger week by week, month by month and is 85% or so now. They take forever to heal, but the strength comes back, and the pain lessens. It becomes a part of your life, but I am sure you will be back to playing.

    Once again, best wishes.

Thanks man. Its going, its too hard to tell the future right now though but its better than a month ago I guess. Ive done some light hitting but it hurts. I doubt ill be ready for the summer, just hoping maybe someday ill be playing high level and pain free again.

I want to see you dominating at national tournaments this year, good luck!

I've been there, man. I know how much it sucks. I was just trying to make you chuckle and realize how pointless it was to get upset about what someone on an internet board says. But again, I did once on here, too. The only person with whom I have a problem with on here is a 4.0 player who constantly talks trash to me about my game and me as a person. At first I got upset, but then I realized 'WTF do I care. . . you're a 4.0!'

Don't sweat it, man. Don't sweat what some people on here say. Just work your rehab, do what your docs say, and you'll be back on the court in no time. Good luck, man. :D

    Hey Tony,

Don't let these guys get to you. My money is on you, bad paw and all, against 98%+ of these characters. ;) Heal up and I'll up that bet to 99.9%.

What a lot of less experienced players don't 'get' is that you can't meaningfully assess a player's ability by watching them hit (or play, for that matter). There is technique that is 'nice to have', ie aesthetically pleasing, and there is technique that 'you must have' to compete. A sense of the aesthetic is what you gain by observation. A sense of the latter, MUCH more important kind of technique is what you get when you PLAY someone. That is to say you get a sense of their weight of shot, as well as their ability to move that weight around the court with precision.

In short, obviously you are an accomplished player, and likely better than most anyone else posting here. Don't let them get you caught up in their negative energy. I wish you best in your recovery.

didn't mean to offend you man. like I said, I'm sure you'd kill me out on the courts. sorry to hear about your injury. I've had a nagging wrist injury myself, but I think I'm finally over it after 2.5 months...still not 100%

I used to have a really funny looking backhand...until some people on these boards pointed out what I was doing wrong. Now I proudly possess a backhand I used to only dream about :D I think 4.5 is within my grasp!

I probably don't have injuries as severe as you since I'm still playing. But I know what you mean.

I use to have a monster first serve and my elbow injury i've never been able to totally get rid of has gotten worse the past couple years and is preventing me from getting the whipping motion that I used to get which really was my main source of generating some realy high power.

I'm able to still hit kick serves and slices, but its very aggrovating that I can't use what was once my best weapon.

    J,

About time for some new videos? I still have never video taped myself... Really love this internet stuff. These youtube videos are great for me to show the team I coach on those rainy days

I did clock my serve finally last year.

Tis true, I put on about 100 pounds, lost a lot of hair, aged 35 years, and switched to a 1 hander, and changed racquets.

The thing is, you think that's slow motion, but that's really all the faster he can make himself move. I tell ya man, you sprain a wrist, and next thing you know, you're that guy. It's tragic.

Fortunately for me in real life the wind is blowing the right way. My wrist keeps getting better and stronger, and my FH continues to come back around to its former bodacious self.

I almost have a FH return of serve again, and I am starting to be able to lay into the eye high and up balls, and whip the low short ones.

I came back to playing too soon, and that hurt me, but fortunately now I am smart enough that if it acts up a bit, I take a few days off so a little thing doesn't become a big one.

Been one heck of an uphill battle, mostly due to my own stupidity (what else is new right?) But I feel like I have a good handle on what needs to happen now, and am pretty pleased with the results. Ironing out this F'ing forehand is my A1 goal over the winter.

I took them down just before the outdoor season began because I had fully intended to have new ones up within the month.

Guess I am more of a dreamer than a doer!
