Jonas Bjorkman: "Rafa is a diva and lots of players dislikes him"

Discussion in 'General Pro Player Discussion' started by TheMagicianOfPrecision, Jul 19, 2009.

  1. Jonas Bjorkman was one of the expert-commentators during the Catella Swedish Open today and the other commentator asked him what he thought about Federer,Nadal,Djokovic and Murray he said "that Federer is the greatest thing that ever has happened the world of tennis and that in front of media and the cameras Rafa seems nice but when the cameras are off that he is false and that lots of players dislikes him because he is very cocky and doesnt show any respect for anyone except Federer, he also said that when Rafa sees Federer he changes immidiately and becomes Mr Nice guy"...askissing that is. I am not surprised...

ps: Dont write any BS that who is Jonas Bjorkman to say these things,Jonas was one of the most liked and loved players on the ATP-tour, former world no 4 is singles and former world no 1 in doubles and 9 times slam winner.
    Over and out.

Let's see the proof. I've only heard Jonas say outright that players dislike Rafa; haven't heard anyone else say that about Rafa.

It's not just Bjorkman. Everyone likes Federer more than Nadal, for many reasons, such as class.

  9. You should ask him, it is probably a lot easier telling these sorts of things when you are retired.

Thats surprising, cause a lot of guys like Roddick, Murray and Djokovic have a lot of respect for Nadal.

And in his conferences he never makes excuses. Of course that is just in front of the camera, but thats Bjorkmans comments surprise me a lot

  11. I totally agree with you,he also said that Federer is a lot nicer to everyone on the tour except ranking and always says hello to everyone with a big smile.

Yup it's all true. It's only Nad-tards like Nadalfan and Clayman who can't see through his ********.

    * Vamosing all the time
    * fist pumps and leg kicks
    * time wasting
    * glaring across the net

all one very large unclassy package. No wonder Rafa hasn't won a Stefan Edberg award!

  14. Totally agree, more players should do what Soderling did in Wimbledon against Nadal:twisted:

Even after Nadal had his best tennis year, he didn't even get nominated for the sportsmanship award. Federer, meanwhile, won it for something like the 4th year in a row.

Who is Jonas Bjorkman, again? JK. Wow, he actually said that about Nadal? That's interesting, usually, commentators mince words and don't directly answer those questions or say things about people they don't like. I guess, deep down, a lot of people hate Nadal. No wonder he never won an players' selection award because not too many people like him.

Yeah, Bjorkman seems like a nice guy when he was playing full time. He's not my favorites but I never really dislike him for any reason. So what he said about Nadal today seems a bit strong but I guess the truth hurts. That explained why the French crowd also hated Nadal during his 4th round collapse against Soderling.

Everyone sees the BS that Nadal put on when he's in front of the media.

    Yeah they really should.

I dunno what Rafa is like outside of the tennis court but in press conferences he always comes across as the guy that will make sure he says all the simple and nice things to make sure that he doesnt offend anyone and keeps everyone happy. It's just a lack of honesty in my opinion and a disrespect to his fans. He should be who he is always. If he's a vamos-yelling, butt picking, fist pumping jackass on court then why force yourself to change when you are off it? Not even the tiniest bit of that side of him comes out when hes off the court which just is not natural and you can tell that its forced.

Federer on the other hand has said many rude and even cocky things in the past, but at least we know he's keeping it real. With Nadal it's very hard to tell. It may be partly due to the language barrier though.

Are his vamos' really worse than Hewitts commons every game, Monfils alles after an opponent error or Murrays commons when hes down

Tell me the last time Nadal did his fist pump and leg kick combo.... not in a while

Fed may be more classy than Rafa, but Rafa is more humble, and id take humility of classyness any day

Come on guys, don't judge Rafa based on comments like that - it's unfair to him. The truth is we don't know how the players behave off the court, so it's really not fair to judge anyone.

    #21
  22. So the people that want to believe what he is saying is true, do, and the ones that don't, don't. Shocking.

Anyone that says "Federer is the best thing to ever happen to tennis" is a less than credible source in my opinion, as it's clear what side of the bread his butter is on.

Similar to Gimelstob completely trashing Nadal during Indian Wells, and when someone like Tsonga or Blake was handing it to him, he would say these guys were "just better" than Nadal, and when Nadal comes back and beats him he is silent. You know, on "live TV."

It's all FUD from a white washed tennis establishment if you ask me. There are plenty of reports from fans, etc. of how nice Nadal is off the court. If what Bjorkman says is true, I interpret it as Nadal is not being a phony with his competition. Gee, what a bummer. Plenty of guys like Nadal, but not everyone has to like him. Someone who feels the need to garner the approval of everyone has issues.

So bottom line, this is garbage hearsay.

Come back when you win 9 grand slams and maybe I might think your opinion is worth anything.

    #24
  25. Huh? Where did THAT number come from? So having an opinion is commensurate with winning tennis tournaments? What?

And how many majors does Bjorkman have? Zero. I don't care about doubles.

What Bjorkman said is nothing but hearsay as previously stated (P.S. this isn't an opinion). My post only bothers you because you know it's correct, so you retort with silliness.

So according to you, only the greatest tennis champions of all time are allowed to have opinions. I will, and hope you will, keep that under consideration from here on out.

hmmm, I don't know. One player's word isn't enough to validate such bold statements. Till we get some more testimonies on this apparent "diva" Nadal, we can't exactly consider this an authentic view on Nadal behined the scenes.

First, don't tell others here what or what not to write.

Next, I doubt any person who would write or say this about another player is either liked or loved by his peers. The comment sounds snarky and I'm betting for one reason or another he simply doesn't like Nadal.

You can always tell when players don't like each other when they shake hands at the net. I've yet to see another player reticent to shake Nadal's hand. As a matter of fact, Nadal and his opponents usually give one another a light hug and back pat.

I could care less whether a player is "well-liked" in the locker room or not. I watch tennis to be entertained and to hopefully see great athletes giving everything they have to win. I enjoy watching Nadal, Federer, Williams sisters, Djokovic, Murray........when they are playing their best and when they are playing to win. It doesn't matter if Murray pumps himself up after winning a point; Monfils jumps around in excitement; Federer cries; or Serena doesn't give the opposing player any compliments....just play the game to win and show me some good tennis. The other nonsense is just bs and doesn't matter to me.

i think you'll find that most federer fans will agree with you. the reason why personality behind closed doors is such a big issue on TT is because nadal fans are always complaining about how federer is arrogant and try to misconstrue everything federer says.

I also remember Safin saying something about Roddick letting the fame get to his head and acting completely different from when they first met.

    Here it is, found it.

Q: Is there anyone from the top players you haven’t managed to build a relationship with?
A: Roddick and I don’t talk to each other. We fell out during the Olympic Games in Athens.

    Q: What hapenned?
A: I am not going to say anything, it’s stupid. But the man has changed and not for the best. I’ve known him, Federer and Hewitt practically since childhood, we’re of the same age, we’ve been playing each other forever. I have an excellent relationship with the other two. Federer became more disciplined, serious, a real Swiss. He is a very good person. Once I had to present some one I knew with a racquet and I didn’t have one on me. I asked Roger for one and he gave it to me without hesitation. I have wonderful memories about Sampras – he treated me really well and I respected him deeply. Just as I respect Agassi.

who cares if nadal is liked by the other players? the atp isn't a popularity contest. many top players are or were unliked: mac/connors/nastase/agassi/lendle etc.

bjorkman was a serve and volleyer, they all hate nadal--ruining the game, no finesse ball bashing etc.

i am surprised that bjorkman would be so outspoken about Rafa, it is unprofessional as a commentator.

rafa appears to be humble considering his accomplishments, and in the tennis mag article with uncle toni-he appears to be anything but a diva.

He had a bad experience with Roddick and doesn't like him now. A similar thing could have happened between Bjorkman and Nadal. The point is that you cant really judge a person on one person's opinion. But the more people you have saying things like this about you, the worse you look so...

oh this is interesting. If this is true, glad there is some kind of drama going on. Everyone is just so nice to each other and this and that. I think it would be really interesting if we had more guys like connors, mcenroe, lendl, etc.

Although don't think anyone should judge rafa based on this. He seems like a sweet guy to me.

After reading that article in the NY Times, it's hard to believe that he would act like a dive - or that his uncle would stand for it. This is a guy who's not even allowed to kick off his tennis shoes without unlacing them first, if you believe the article!
