    You see while I was playing yesterday I ended up spraining my ankle. However I couldn't feel that it was serious so I played for another 2 hours and when I got home it was a swollen mess. I was wondering how long this will take to heal because I have classes everyday this week and I won't be able to cancel them to get refunds. Also, if anyone has any tips on how to treat a sprained ankle please share with me.

    I hope you applied ice right away. As old as it is, the RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) approach is still the best course of action.

    Yes I applied ice nearly all of last night and the swelling has gone down quite a bit. However, how long will it take to actually heal?

    At least a couple of days, perhaps a few weeks? Depends on the severity. Massage as well as the RICE treatment.

    R.I.C.E. for sprain

    Icing and Compression will stop and pain and stop the swelling. You still need to rest the injury and elevate it as long as it is still swollen and tender.

    You can buy re-freezable ice compression wraps which are easy to use and not messy at all. They come in handy after the injury heals for times you use the sprained muscles to keep them from swelling again.

    See a wrap at http://www.coldoneinc.com/ankle_wrap.html

    Good Luck

    the swelling has gone down and the pain too. But, it's like i was totally bruised on my lower ankle. Should I start playing tomorrow? Or wait a bit more for the pain to completely go?

    it has been six weeks now that i have sprained my ankle and the pain and feel has almost gone away. The most important thing to do is not to rush back into tennis that would have to be the worst decision i have ever made in my sports life.

    If you do return to sports and you have been cleared by your doctor always remember to tape your ankle to stop spraining and to get a ankle brace they are important too because they prevent ligaments in your ankle from stretching.

    My doctor deeply recommended that i wear a ankle brace and tape my ankle for at least 6 months to prevent further damage to the ankle.

    I'm in the exact same boat right now. I sprained my left ankle yesterday and could not get out of a commitment. I wrapped it up and came back home after several hours while enduring pain. The fact that we both put unnecessary pressure to the injury site caused more swelling. I iced down the ankle as soon as I got home and I'm still icing. Keep that foot on ice for up to 15 minutes and take breaks to prevent frostbite. If you must go out, wrap up that ankle, but not so tight that you lose circulation. You and I should have stayed off the hurt foot, but since we couldn't, keep icing, and wrap it up when you go out. Remember, not too tight.

    Well I have an ankle brace but I'm not sure if that'll help. The pain's gone away for the most part, but I'm scared that I might still fracture a bone or something. I can run now and tried to play a bit against my cousin and the ankle seems fine. I think that when i sprained my knee I fell backwards onto my ass so that saved my ankle big time. I'll see if the leg brace will help though.

    Each ankle sprain has a degree on how bad the ankle is.
    These are the symptoms that show you how bad your ankle is.

    First degree ankle sprain:

    * Some stretching or mild tearing of the ligament.
    * Little or no functional loss - the joint can still function and bear some weight (...but hurts!!!).
    * Mild pain
    * Some swelling
    * Some joint stiffness.

    Second degree ankle sprain:

    * Some more severe tearing of the ligaments
    * Moderate instability of the joint
    * Moderate to severe pain - weightbearing is very painful
    * Swelling and stiffness

    Third degree ankle sprain:

    * Total rupture of a ligament - there is a loss of motion
    * Gross instability of the joint - joint function is lost
    * Severe pain initially followed by no pain
    * Severe swelling

    well it seems like it's a first degree sprain then. I played today with it and it seems fine but I'm still gonna ice it for the next two days and wear an ankle support.
