I couldn't believe my ears when I heard Martina mentioned Kimiko Date as Wozniaki's opponent.... so I looked it up and there she is, at 38 years old playing in the singles draw, and actually won the first set before running out of gas.

    Good for her!

Not taking anything away from her but what does it say about the state of a womens tennis that a 38 year old who hadnt played serious tennis in over 12 years before her first comeback appearances earlier this year takes a set off the current World #9. Too bad she didnt hold on to win the match, I would have loved to seen the reaction if that happened. Back when Date was a top 10 player the likes of Wozniacki would be lucky to be in the top 50.

Wozniacki had a hard time beating someone old enough to be her mother and she is in the top 10. WTA has never been sadder, and that is saying something.

reminds me of when Navratilova entered Wimby singles a few years ago...and didn't she beat Dulko in the first round?

sadly, it says a lot about the lack of depth on the women's tour.

I guess from what you guys are saying, mens' tennis must be in trouble too, if Pete Sampras can play and defeat our top pros in exhibitions. -_____-'

Navratilova entered Eastbourne in 2002 at 45 and beat Panova, a regular top 30 player around that time (Panova would beat Kournikova in the first round of Wimbledon btw). Then she took took Hantuchova, a top 10 player of 2002 who would reach the Wimbledon quarters with a win over Dokic, the U.S Open quarters with a win over Henin, and had won Indian Wells with a win over Hingis, to 3 sets before losing.

Then at Wimbledon 2003 now at 46 she beat some Columbian journeywomen 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, and took Dulko to 3 sets in the 2nd round.

It's one set. Again it doesn't mean much
Djokovic and Murray both lost a set too.

Date plays a different game then every other woman on tour. No woman sees that slice like that anymore. She threw Wozniacki off big time with her different game. I thought the comparison to Santoro was somewhat accurate. Its so different than what you are used to that its really hard to beat.

Date doesnt use slice much. She hits flat and low.

Did you not see her backhand slice? that was giving her fits on the other side.

Well I didnt see any of todays match. I just heard she took Wozniacki to 3 sets which sort of surprised me. I remember her in the 90s hitting low and flat on nearly every shot, so if she was using slice much she has changed her game since then.

her forehand was still very low and flat. But what gave Wozniacki trouble was the slice backhand. you just dont see shots like that anymore.
