I can safely say, I will not have to stand on my head. It is pretty windy up there.

Whatever happened to Hale? I recall being very impressed with her game last year when she broke through. She was going for her shots and being an aggressive baseliner. Haven't seen much of that Halep this year, she seems to have become more of a counterpuncher. Any reason for this change? Or is it just me?

Halep really dodged a potential upset. With hope, the 1st day scare will strengthen her mind going forward.

Maybe, but huge props to Date-Krumm; women's tennis, even more so than the men's, is geared toward younger players. To be out there at 43(!!!) with a lead on a seeded legend is extremely impressive.

Venus has to change her bagel order, hoping breadsticks are an option.

I guess she should bottle those fumes. She'd make a fortune selling them.

Holy crap! Date-Krumm! How can you play tennis so well at this age? I mean she's older than Sampras who retired 12 years ago!

Sloane is playing very well at the moment. She just won the first set against Annika Beck 6-0. Seems as though Hogstedt is a better fit than Annacone. She's using her forehand very effectively. And is serving a lot better than she has in the past. I know that it's "just" Beck but she has to start somewhere.

They should enjoy her while she lasts; she's not a strong contender for the title.

Anyone else think the opening night US Open match between $harapova and Karilenko is really poor quality? I've seen a lot of exciting and quality matches, THIS IS NOT one of them. Sadly. That sucks they show a poor match at such a big opening night.

Jitters, probably. It is the last major of the year and no one is in a hurry to make 1st round mistakes.

Kirilenko just did a b**** move to that ball girl.

Ball girl comes to get the ball rolling back towards her feet, she kicks it to another direction.

I'm by no means a Sharapova hater, but hot-diggity, she needs to tone down the fargin shrieking. I think it's louder now that it used to be.

It just sounds louder at night, but, you are right, it's too loud either way. Very very very annoying and completely unnecessary. I recently watched a rerun of her match against Melani Oudin and she played entire games completely silent. Which means she consciously does it and is aware of how it sounds and clearly does not care what we think about it.

.... Or how it effects her opponent. Those screams go on while her opponent is about to hit the ball. That is a calculated distraction, no better then cheating. She should not be allowed to get away with it.

Exactly, so can't really fault her. She's going to be a junior in college interviewing two HOF WTA players, anyone would be a little nervous in her situation. I thought she handled it fine, she's pretty cute too :)
