"L' " is the italian definite article "La" (like "the", but feminine and in the singular). It looses the vowel "a" and takes the apostrophe when comes before a word starting with another vowel: like in this case, before "America".

    Literally, "L'America" can mean:
    - the United States of America;
    - the american continent.
In a methaphorical sense, it can mean the Promised Land (this is the meaning of the italian film's title: it speaks about Albania, actually)

Considering that there's no specific context, but even that you're going to show it every time you decide to wear the shirt, the metaphorical sense seems to me more probable ;-)

    And the winner is...hollywood!

    Here's the lyrics.

    I took a trip down to L'America
To trade some beads for a pint of gold
    I took a trip down to L'America
To trade some beads for a pint of gold
    L'America, L'America, L'America
    L'America, L'America, L'America

Come on people, don't you look so down
You know the rain man is coming to town
He'll change your weather, change your luck
And it'll teach you how to
    Find yourself
    L'America

    Friendly strangers came to town
All the people put them down
But the women loved their ways
    Come again some other day
    Like the gentle rain
    Like the gentle rain
    That falls

    I took a trip down to L'America
To trade some beads for a pint of gold
    I took a trip down to L'America
To trade some beads for a pint of gold
    L'America, L'America, L'America
    L'America, L'America, L'America
    L'America

    Cousu d'or et brodé d'argent

(copied from an internet lyrics site, I'm not typing out all those accents on an American keyboard, and I'd mess them up anyhow)
