I played with a guy tonight and have gotten real settled in with my racquets strung at 40#s. I can really whip the ball and put heavy spin on it. He was a 4.5 and is probably a 3.5-4 now, getting his game back and he was commenting on how much spin was kicking at him.

I noticed that all 3 balls had string marks on them within 15 minutes. I have done this before, but never thought too much about it. What is it a sign of? Just heavy string bite from the low tension?

It only happens to me when I have a newly stenciled racket. Could that be it?

I have some Gosen OG Micro in a teal color that I use for crosses in hybrids with poly mains. It's a good, cheap string, but the teal color leaves "grill marks" on the ball.

I agree with Nuke, it is a sign that one of you was using fresh dark colored synthetic gut.
Old ladies can leave marks on the ball with that stuff.

If you look at any balls I use there will be "grill" marks on them.

The other night I hit a shot so hard that the strings actually cut the ball into about 75 roughly square pieces.

The guy I hit with was using old multi strings on a demo racquet strung at 60#s. It could be my strings, I am using full poly Big Hitter in a blue color.

It's not like I am saying I hit the heaviest ball on earth or something lame. I just never thought about what caused it.

Yup, the Gosen does it. I use OG Micro Red and I can see red lines all over the balls in a matter of minutes.:)

This happens when I put stencil on poly strings. I'm not going to use stencil anymore lol.

I've noticed this with certain strings. They'll leave marks all over the ball while others do not.

BHB didn't put grill marks on your balls. Must have been your friend.

you're not supposed to BBQ the balls before playing with them...

No it really wasn't. I could tell it was me after a few minutes of rallys and seeing a few balls that I either netted or he lobbed back to me. Which is why I made the thread. I have done the grill marks before, but never really thought much about it.

He is using a soft clear multi thats about to break. I am thinking that it is the low tension I am at..it really seems to bite the ball a lot more.

    Yup. Agreed.

Forten black is another string that is really awful with leaving marks on the ball.
