Can anyone compare the firmness differences between the Gamma Leather Grip and the TW Private Label 1.5mm x 25mm Leather Grip? Which one is firmer or are they about the same in firmness?

    Thanks.

I use a 4 5/8 grip for the most part

Can anyone confirm the Pro Kennex leather grip stats?

I got a used PK R98 that is 4 3/8 that had a synthetic grip. I took it off and now have the thick TW grip and a TournaTac OG. It is pretty close to my ideal grip size preference. I'm considering getting a pallet to size up.

I picked up x2 more with stock PK Leather grips in my ideal grip size. The grip seems quite thick and maybe I'm not used to the pallet shape. I am thinking of re-wrapping and pulling the grip very tight to see if it will bring the size down a bit OR using a thinner leather grip.

My BB DC London's have the Head leather and i wrapped it very tight. Seemed to have brought down the grip size a tad fr your traditional 4 5/8s and my arm/hand really likes it. I was prev using BB/Volkl leather and that seems a bit thick, adding to the grip size.

    Thanks everyone

    Hi Sfrazeur -

Hey thanks for the thought :) From the users that have phoned in their digits already, I have a hunch the Kimony website specs might be off a little bit. Casco has four grips and they ranged from 12.5 - 17 grams, and Automatix has Kimonys ranging from 13 - 15 grams. That's still the lightest leather grip by far, just maybe not as light as they are advertising.

    Hi Bt Johnson -

I have posted your pics for you. Looks awesome! and I have a few questions fer ya when you have a moment.

    1. From the looks of the logo, you have two **** grips. I think the darker one is the Pro version, is that correct? and I'm curious your thoughts on these two.

    2. Where did you get a Donnay grip that is that dark color, is that from an old racquet?

    3. I've never even heard of Bard, what is the story on that one?

Thanks for uploading the pics ChicagoJack....
    On to the inquires:

    1. Yes you are correct about the **** leather grips, the dark one is the pro version and it is 16g trimmed on a 4 3/8. It's much thinner than the other version **** carries even though they are listed at 1.45 mm each. Supposedly the pro version was created for Berydch.

The standard version weighs 23 g trimmed on a 4 3/8 and is suppose to be similar to a Heads Finest Calfskin. The grip was produced for Jim Courier I was told. While I don't think it feels like a Head Calfskin I must say that it is a fantastic piece of leather and more closely resembles the one Fairway I now own ( not pictured)

    Continued...

The **** pro version is as thin of a leather grip as I could tolerate, the KIMONY Techni leather is just too thin. Having said that I prefer the lighter **** leather grip.

    2. I sent you a picture of the grip that the DONNAY leather grip came in, I noticed your Donnay grips only have the name branded once. These say DONNAY twice as they went on the BORG One Pro's with the longer handle. This is a fabulous piece of calfskin as well.

    3. Bard's leather was supposedly from a racquet company named Lombards. Keep in mind I'm in my early, early 30s so this is second hand information from the gentleman I have acquired most of these grips through. The Bard's is a very nice grip too but I hate the multiple brandings.

I have more leather grips as well that you might not have ever seen but I did not think anyone would be that interested.

My grip of choice is the Heads Finest Calfskin or the Prince steer hide grips on my Tecnifibre frames in the pictures. Much different than their calfskin

    Hi Bt Johnson -

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. Especially useful is the info about the 2 versions of **** leather. I was scratching my head trying to figure out how the darker Pro version could be 6 grams lighter, but the same width, length and thickness as the standard (lighter color) version. Your explanation about the darker version being thinner despite the website specs makes sense out of that mystery now.

Ive just seen on another website, that Dunlop Gecko-Tac replacement grips are 1.8mm thick.

I'm not sure if this is accurate as I have never seen its thickness quoted anywhere before and it doesnt feel overly thick to me.

Does anyone have a way of measuring the thickness of grips? Is there a tool that can do this?

I think you need a caliper. You can get one from home depot for under 10 bucks, or a digital one for around 30 dollars.

Actually I think it's safe to say that Gecko-Tac is 1.8mm. I compared it to a couple of other grips that I know thickness of and I would say 1.8mm is correct. It's quite a firm grip too, for those of you liking firm synthetic grips.

I dont have them installed yet, but these **** (Pro Version) leather grips are about the prettiest I've ever seen. The edges are slightly burnished, a bit darker. I always like that look on the wrap. Dont have the specs on them yet but will post asap.

I have a Becker leather grip coming this week from tw and will write down the weight in trimmed and trimmed in addition to the thickness after I stretch it on the racquet.

I got my becker black leather grip in today and was able to get the following specs when installed on a APD 1/4 inch handle.

Becker Leather weight with everything 30 grams
    [IMG]

Thickness after I stretched on my racquet 1.465 mm

I stretched it very hard while putting on. For reference my TW leather I measured on the same calipers as 1.235 after I stretched it.

Weight before and after on my APD Installed so overall it added 25 grams

Hope this helps, I was thinking based on what I have read that the grip was going to be much thicker but it seemed to be very easy to stretch and was a lot softer than the TW grip. Overall I like the way this grip feels so far. Hope my pictures upload, its my first try uploading pictures.

    Hi McLovin,

It's fairly typical that grips will come out of the box longer than you need. When you trim grips to fit the pallet, you will shed a few grams after installation. That's also why you will see on the first page of the thread, there's a sections for both trimmed/installed and untrimmed/out of package weights. There are exceptions, some frames have longish pallets by design, (there's many in the Prince line) to accommodate peeps with a 2 handed BH. In that case you'll probably need the whole length to wrap with, and the installed weight will be the same as the out of the package weight.

    Brilliant thread.

Question. I've switched the tecnifibre tfight 315, which according to this thread, comes with one of the lightest, thinnest leathers around. Problem is, the 3/8 grips already run small and I'd like to find something thicker while dropping a couple grams of weight.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

The Tec grip isn't particularly thin or light. It's pretty standard.

I'm thinking of replacing the stock Yonex synthetic grip on a VCORE Xi 98 with a Tourna Thin and Wilson Pro overgrip.

My reason for changing the grip is that it feels too big for a #3 size grip and I'm afraid to buy a #2 and find it too small and have to mess up the balance with multiple overgrips.

Should I notice a significant difference in balance and weight here?

    Hi WhereIsMacMac,

I just double checked. There is currently only one leather grip listed on the Dunlop website. It's the same dark brown grip with the purple packaging available here at TW. It's listed at both locations as the "Tour Classic". I've edited the list so the names are consistent and it's less confusing.

Regarding the 5 grams difference, one of the unexpected discoveries while compiling the list, is that grip weights, (and especially leather grips) vary quite a bit. If you buy 10 of any single leather grip, I wouldn't be surprised if the spread between the lightest and the heaviest was 8 grams or more. This is why is you will see the list is in descending order and there will be numerous entries for the same grip. It gives us a way to estimate an average.

    Hope that helps!

Hi Robbo1970 - There's a few listings for the weight on the big list on the first page, but unfortunately, thickness digits on Gamma leather are still missing.

Cool, happy to assist. But maybe you could return the favor? The meaning of your screen name tickles my curiosity funny bone every time I see it. I've even googled it in hopes of hitching a ride on the clue bus. Apparently there is a small town in Peru in the province of Piura called Mac Mac. Is that where you got the idea for your TT handle? Or perhaps something to do with this song?

    Yikes -

I have these on all of my frames -

Anyone have the thickness of the discontinued Wilson Pro Hybrid grips? I don't see the thickness listed in the thread- maybe I am just missing the forest for the trees :(

My cut/trimmed Wilson Pro Hybrid grips weigh 21, 22, and 22 grams on my Wilson Pro Open 3/8 inch frames. Seems I got very lucky.

I have six of these discontinued grips left and bummed Wilson switched to the Subprime (sublime) Grips. ;) the Sublime grips are just awful IMO -

Any idea what leather grips come closest to the Wilson Pro Hybrid as far as feel and thickness?

These grips seem to be in a separate category since they are leather grips with a synthetic back.

Any idea why Wilson switched to Sublime grip ? ??? Cheaper ? :(

The Sublime grip seems to be very similar to the Dunlop Viper Dry and Prince ResiPro grips. Maybe they are just following suit with bringing out a similar grip. It must be popular for some people I guess.

I have a feeling that that Pro-Hybrid was 1.6mm thick. The Wilson leather is 1.6mm thick as well I believe, but doesnt have the coated finish of the Pro-Hybrid. If you want bare leather, then I'd go for the Wilson, but if you need an overgrip, you may be best getting the 1.3mm TW leather and putting your OG over the top.

However, I think there is another brand that does a coated leather grip. It may be Volkl or Becker, I can't remember.

Thanks for the reply. I hated the Prince Resi-Pro also. lol

The Pro Hybrid Grips are a little softer feeling than the Volkl leather grips I have, but I have to use an overgrip most of the year, here in the humid southeast. I have a few Pro Hybrid grips remaining thankfully, but realize the end is coming eventually, and I'll have to make a switch.

Love to find this grip if anyone else has more info. I'll start looking for this. Appreciate the info.

Voodoo Boot - Cool, thanks for the digits. The list has been updated.

g4driver & Robbo - I just checked around for thickness of the Wilson Pro Hybrid. Robbo is correct, several online retailers list it as 1.60 mm thick. If your patience is high for searching they can still be found for the time being, but I can understand the thought that a suitable replacement is inevitable at some point. I have a hunch that Torres can offer insight as to a similar feeling grip to the Pro Hybrid.

This thread is fantastic for anyone who wants to set up their sticks the right way and know all their options.

I recently added a wilson shock shield and can verify the weight installed at 24 grams.

I removed a Head leather grip that was 25 grams installed.

Hoping I can get a Wilson Comfort Hybrid installed at 10 grams. Will verify when completed. Going by this thread, it will take a lot of the weight off compared to leather and should also increase the grip size as well.

I will be removing a tecnifibre leather grip, and will get the weight on that as well.

they are currently on sale on TWs 12 days of XMas sale for next to nothing.
The Comfort Hybrid is great for increasing gripsize (2.20 mm) without adding any weight.
It's about the thickest grip you can get.
