I think this is a good match up between one of the most underrated players (hewitt)
and in my opinion one of the most overrated players (safin) here are the stats...

They have had equal success when it comes to Grand Slams
both have made the finals four times and both have won twice

Hewitt though has won more titles (27) compared to Safin's 15
and Lleyton has also won two ATP masters cups.

They're 7-7 on the head to head.

Tough call to make. Hewitt has been playing well, but I have to think that the bigger serve on grass will make the difference, especially since apparently Hewitt was really exhausted after his last match.

Ths safin we saw at the USO 00 or AO 05 would destroy hewitt. Well he did at the AO anyways. Safin at his best was much better than Hewitt.

As far as grass.. Tough call.

If your life hung in the balance, who would you pick to live/die with?... The answer is easy for me... Hewitt.

Just look at my sig for my thoughts...

Hewitt better career, Safin better player, but its closer than most think. Hewitt maximized potential. Safin sqaundered it

I'm talking about there careers, Who's been the best player
and who would you rank higher overall.

Hewitt is clearly better on grass. he has five titles at queens
and a Wimbledon champion too. Safin hasn't done much on grass.

Im sure Hewitt has had the better overrall career. But I would take slams over Pete (in 2000) and Roger in 05 (at his peak) over Hewitts slam wins over Fatigued Pete who just finished playing Agassi, Rafter, and Safin and was all gassed for the final and young Nalbandian who sucks on grass. Id rather have Safin's career to be honest

Pete was atleast able to serve extremely hard and move pretty normal in the 2000 U.S Open final and was still close to his best while having alot of results in 2000. Wimbledon Champ, U.S Open finals, 2 points from Australian Open title, Miami winner, could have been year end #1 if he played a bit more. 2001 was totally different. No titles in 2001 and 2002 other than the 02 Open, terrible slam results, dropped out of the top 10. On top of that much more fatigued from the semifinal and tournament log and serving 40 mph slower and moving a step slower.

A fatigued 30 year old Pete who just finished playing 3 former USO champs all in a row. He played Pete but a Pete who prolly could have been taken out by a qualifier that day he was so gassed. Safin took out a Pete playing all cylinders. Or close to it

Winning a slam is what matters. I doesn't matter who you beat to do it
lets be honest Federer beat a bunch of nobodys to win the French
but who cares? You can't pick who you play.

How about the ATP tour finals, they have to help Hewitt's case?

Please. Sampras was 29 in 2000 so only 1 year difference. He wasnt at his best in the 2000 final either and Hewitt still beat up on him much more easily. He just doesnt have the achievement glorified as much since his game and persona is not as sexy to most as Safin.

I voted for Hewitt of course. My bias aside it is a no brainer.

Wimbledon and U.S Open > U.S Open and Australian Open

Finals of 3 of the 4 slams > 3 of your 4 finals being at Australian Open

Two year end #1s > Cup of coffee stay at #1 and losing out on year end #1 to clay courter Kuerten in best year

Two year end Championship titles > Biggest non slam titles Safin won

Head to head vs most top players: Hewitt > Safin

Of Course Wimbledon is more important than the Aus Open!

Wimbledon is the most prestigious tournament in the world!!

I'm sure if Safin could, he would swap his AO for a win at Wimbledon.

You get the same amount of points for winning either
because they're both Grand Slam titles.

Safin never seemed to care about winning either of the European slams
and was more intrested in the Hardcourt titles.

When you measure career achievements of players, than since late 80's:

    AO=FO=Wimbledon=USO.

Wimbledon is the most prestigious tournament, but saying that it is harder to win Wimbledon than any other slam these days and that player who wins Wimbledon is better player than one who wins any other slam, is simply not true.

Right Safin never even reached a final at either the FO or Wimbledon only since he didnt care. Yet another new excuse from the Safin fans. Is that why he looked on the verge of crying after losing a tough 4 set quarterfinal to Magnus Norman in 2000 when he was one of the favorites for the French. While Safin was better than Hewitt on clay he still wasnt quite good enough to win the French even those years he tried and went deep, and he certainly wasnt ever good enough on grass to win Wimbledon.

All things being equal a Wimbledon title takes higher prestige over an Australian Open title. Ask nearly any expert of the game and they will say the same thing. Of course 2 Australian Opens today >> 1 Wimbledon, but 1 Wimbledon > 1 Australian Open.

Here is the one with Roddick in the mix as well:

Quite close. Roddick 56, Hewitt 108, Safin 107.

Hewitt did more with less, while Safin is one of the most talented people I've ever seen play tennis.

If Roddick were to ever win a 2nd slam to match Safin and Hewitt, I think you would have to rate him over both for his longevity and consistency.

    Look at Hewitt's accomplishments:
    -2 Grand Slam titles (1 U.S, 1 Wimbledon)
    -2 Masters Cups
    -2 Masters Series (2 IW)
    -27 Career Titles
-2001 & 2002 ATP player of the year

Those are some pretty good stats, no?

It seemed he only liked playing on hardcourts. Roddick never seemed that bothered about winning the French
maybe it's because they both knew that they couldn't but Safin's game should of worked well on grass.

I'm not a Safin fan. I like Hewitt a lot more than Marat.

    Not in Roddick's opinion :)

The Wimbledon Hewitt won was the most uninteresting slam I have ever watched. Plus he beat Nalbandian in the final.

I would say Safin playing one of the greatest matches of all time vs Federer would make Safins AO equal Hewitts Wimby.

Has Hewitt even beaten Fed at a slam?

it would get even closer between the 3... but hewitt would still have his 2 year-end masters cup, which would give him -in my opinion- the advantage (in terms of career achievements).
