For guys, it may feel like it makes a difference, but 1/2" height gained or loss is hardly noticeable.
However, playing aggressive and serving well, an extra insole to get me just over 6' sure seems to help.
Until I need to hit some low and half volleys, move back from whence I just came, and my sprained left ankle just starts to swell and swell.
As the norm, a balance needs to be found.

As low as possible. I tried one some NB shoes that were unusually high and I couldn't move in them let alone play. They felt very unstable which was no surprise given some basic physics :)
