One of the times Mac had every right to be furious!

Mac got screwed badly by both an incompetent linesperson, and an incompetent umpire. UNREAL.

Chang is a great sport, even though he couldn't know Mac really did get screwed.

Chang still has fantastic footwork on the passes.

Ok. I'm missing something. Exactly how did he get screwed?

Linesman calls the ball "good". Then the umpire announces "1st serve", then looks at the linesman, who suddenly changes his call to "out", and the umpire overrules himself and calls it out. Then admits he didn't see it, and the overrule is based on the linesman's reversed call....

    John should get two!!

    That's a screwing! LOL

It was out. The line umpire made a late out call. He corrected his call similar to when a line umpire corrects an out call to good. It was obviously out.

The chair umpire got nervous and didn't handle the conversation well with Mac. But he didn't get screwed. It was good of Chang to give him a first serve because of the delay.

No way! First, it if was "obviously out", the incompetent chair should have seen that and overruled. Second, by the time he corrected it, and then the chair corrected his announcement, the delay alone should mean 2 serves for Mac....and rightfully so....the psychological impact alone would have a huge impact on any player.

error 1: linesman screws up on call
error 2: umpire doesn't see the "obviously out" shot
error 3: linesman does NOT immediately reverse his call, but waits, until Chang looks at umpire, and umpire looks at him (he clearly was tentative even then)

error 4: umpire feels that even though he didn't see the ball, and he's already announced the 1st serve, he should now give Mac only 1 serve based on linesmans reversed call.

BAD BAD BAD officiating.....they messed up bad, Mac had every right to be upset, and even Chang having to do the right thing himself doesn't fix the psychological impact.....

The umpires at these exhibition tournaments that sit in the chair are not great chair umpires. The line umpires are not usually that great either. But he still didn't get screwed. I do agree that it wasn't handled that well with the conversation though. The umPire fumbled his thoughts and words a lot.

Oh and just because the umpire says the score or first serve doesn't mean that the players are stuck with it if there is a late line call

Those guys are still playing some very high quality tennis. Very inspirational.

The fact that the umpires and lines-persons are not the best and this is not the pro tour-there is no reason for any of these guys to act like jerks. They should be happy to be out still playing and having an audience. Doesn't Mac know it really looks silly to play the role of a spoiled brat at age 50 something?

Its more of an act than anything to give the fans their money's worth. Mac knows the people are coming there to see some kind of tantrum from him and if he does'nt do it there is some disappointment at not getting their full money's worth. Its become his persona. Almost every commercial like his enterprise commercials or some tv appearances when he appeared on the office have poked fun at his angry outbursts. Its remarkable he can continue to make money from this schtick. He is a cultural pop icon. If I were paying to go see him play, I would want to see some kind of this behaviour. It also shows he is still very passionate about the game.

It's my understanding now, that it is also in Mac's contracts now that he cannot receive a point penalty. The chair umpire can issue warnings, but no point penalties. Isn't that a joke?

But, the chief of officials at a lot of these exo events let the tournament director know that after a warning, if Mac does any blatant or severe verbal abuse towards any officials, all line umpires and the chair umpire will be removed from the court.

And it has actually happened once. The officials were off court for an hour before the tournament director got it through to Mac that he needed to just play tennis.
