You'll hate me for saying this, but my ItS hybrid stabilized at around 2-3 hours but dropped again after that and is still dropping at the 6 hour mark. I'm now at 14.8% tension loss. My best guess is that the gut is losing about 9% and the poly is probably at around 21%. If I didn't use RacquetTune I would never suspect it. I still like the way it plays. I can see why some people think Iontec is good at holding tension because you can't tell what is happening based on how it plays, but the numbers don't lie. If my hunch is right, then its tension holding capacity is mediocre for modern co-poly at best.

I do like the feel and dwell time, so it's possible that I'll stick with this setup if I don't find anything better. I'll probably keep the tension of the gut and poly the same since I don't want the difference to be any bigger than it is after the poly tension drop.

i gave a set of ItS and ItB to my friend who uses racquettune and he said it was pretty stable after the initial tension drop. i know he leaves the string tensioned for ~30 secs before clamping off to help minimize the tension loss after the first hit. he also tried thunderstrings qu4ttro and mentioned that qu4ttro held tension even better.

"Pretty stable" means different things for different people, so I have no idea what that means in real terms. I also wait a long time under constant pull before clamping off my strings.

Aren't Thunderstrings designed for low tension? I'm interested in something that will hold well in the low to mid 50's.

Has anyone used the Thunderstring synthetic gut? I've used some of the Mamba strings to include microfibre and Iontec and thought they were topnotch. Haven't heard any talk about this string. Just curious.

    Black Mamba/OGSM 48/52 in PK5G

Just strung black mamba hybrid with OGSM at 48/52. Initial hitting felt very crisp. Easy access to spin and very precise. A bit difficult to generate pace and hit flat out. Anybody also feel that the black mamba is low-powered and crisp?

I too found it crisp, but it had average power(for a poly). I do agree it's not for flat hitters.

Yea, looks like I will have to try multi cross next time to soften the bed. Between syn-gut and multi as a cross, should they be strung at same tension or higher tension for the multi due to more stretching?

I like stringing them lower than the poly so there isn't a huge tension gap when the poly loosens.

when i hybrid a multi or syn gut crosses w/ poly mains, i string the crosses +2#s to account for the greater elasticity. if i don't there's way too much power and everything i hit goes long.

Strung a yonex rdis 300 mp with mamba supra 17/ iontec 17 at 55/50lbs. I don't recall the overall string bed stiffness from before but we checked the overall tension today(strung about a month ago) and it was at 40lbs.

Strung up ith at 46 in my Dunlop. This is the sweet spot. The racket is a controlled cannon. Lots of pop and spin, and a solid response off the string bed. This will be one of my go to set ups.

    Mamba Tennis,

Can you comment on how the black premium gut plays compared to your previous natural version? Thanks!

I'm interested as well. I really like the natural version and bit the bullet and bought 6 sets of the black.

Maybe you can accurately (and unbiasedly) compare the two colors when you have the time?

Another 6lb difference between mains and crosses. I tried it, very good pocketing but not sure yet.

I'd be happy to. My black gut shipped today and should arrive Thursday. I am playing a tournament this weekend and another next. I will likely string it up in one of my frames. I will have no bias for color. Whatever plays better is what I want.

Collagens don't have color, aside from that natural pale/borderline yellowish color. So certainly, something had to be done/added. That's why I'm always skeptical of colored gut.

I'm with you. I was just trying to make the point that I'm all about performance and that I won't tell you I like one better than the other due to color.

    Hi,

I am new to poly's . The only poly i have used so far is Gosen Polylon and trying to switch to Multi's.

Also read that polylon is the first gen poly and is very hard on arm.

Wondering how stiff is Black Mamba? Do you recommend this if you have arm issues ?? (No Tennis Elbow yet!!) :)

    thanks

polylon never felt stiff to me but boy did it mess up my wrist. It was the first poly i ever used and probably ruined my wrist permanently. Can only use gut now.

Gosen Polylon is absolutely garbage as far as I'm concerned. It plays like a board and is just terrible on the arm. What did you think of it and what were you using before?

Maybe you should try out a hybrid of a multi in the cross, and poly for the mains. It's a nice balance of poly spin, but added comfort and liveliness. I would assume the Black Mamba would be great for this application, currently I use their O-power in a hybrid with a synthetic gut.

Go for it. The shipping is free and a set of O-power is really cheap. I say it's totally worth a shot, since even if you didn't like it, your investment was very minimal. Ray said their O-power is very similar to SPPP. I can't confirm because I have never used it.

    Mamba Tennis,

I just received my order of Mamba Premium Natural Gut 16 in black. However, they're labeled as the Supra Natural Gut 16. Is your black the same as the Supra Natural Gut 16?

    Thanks!

The label is used for both. If it was marked on the Supra line, then that was a mistake.

In the upper right hand corner of every post is a number. Just click on the number and it will pull up the individual post. You can just use that address.

Just strung Iontec Hexa 1.20 in Dunlop 4D 300T at 48/46. As other posters have said, this poly does not play like a poly. It's soft, had good amount of power, control and spin. I can probably string less 2-4lbs the next time to get a bit more power.

Anybody tried ItH in hybrid? If so, with syn gut or multi?

Mamba's top selling reel is black mamba gear twisted, yet most of this thread has been about iontec. Has anyone played the gear twisted, or the gear? How do they compare to iontec hexa?

    Bad news bears...

I had my first encounter with premature breakage last night. This is the frame I strung for my econogut tutorial thread. 10 minutes warmup then 3rd return in, big forehand off a funny bounce :(

I checked the string before installign it and couldn't find any defects and did a clean job especially for the tutorial; I have no clue what happened:evil:

^^ It happens whenever you don't hit away from the sweetspot. It looks like you came pretty close to shanking the shot.

I've had my share of frame/near-frame top of the head breakage.

yep, it's quite easy to shear a string if your timing is off and you hit off center.

I mean it happens man. You're going to shank some balls when returning serves, and dealing with bad bounces. And sometimes, you break strings away from the center.

I know it's hard to believe but it wasn't a shank, at all. It was much higher than I am used to but it was a clean shot. Shear pops and shanks typically happen at the grommets where there's a significant angle tension.

I'm not saying I'm infalliable but I've never popped a string in the center like that when it was brand new. At the edges, yes.

MambaT or anybody else that can assist:

I've tried a lot of strings the last few years and Prince Beast XP 17 is my #1 choice. However, price is an issue. Are there any polys Mamba carries that play similair?
