This is the first time I saw Rios too. He was 18, I believe.

Ocuh indeed, how time flies :-?

They somehow never seemed to meet in tournaments with Sampras, weird.

Crowd really seemed thrilled watching this match. For a lil whippersnapper, Rios sure gave Pete a tough battle. Weird to see RIos look so young in Lotto.

Yes I wish Rios could have developed longer rivalries with Sampras and also Agassi (who he caused to a lot of trouble for in their 3 matches). He was such fun to watch when was in form.

In the Rios book "The Man We Barely Knew" Rios said later that year he lost to Pete at the French Open that he would beat Sampras and that he wasn't nearly as good as he expected and that his backhand was "shi*" LOL

Of course Rios only played Sampras once more in Germany indoors but it was towards the end of Rios career. Rios dilay Pete in a seniors exo in Chile and according to the book "killed" him. Rios vs. Sampras in 97 or 98 on clay or hard court would have been very interesting.

    Lol :D

I was at that exo :), only time I've seen Ríos live. It was three sets, I'm pretty sure.
