OK, let the guessing games begin on the mysterious other inspiration...

My take? Wouldn't it be ironic if it was Anna K, especially since most of the -ovas have been quoted as saying she was an influence?

Yea nyu come to think of it, didn't Nadal finish practising and Maria and Kirilenko came onto court and he didn't know where to look and he got a bit shy?

I'm sure Susan will know for sure.

    You guys are funny.

Rafa keeps insisting he's "single." Mostly recently in a Dutch mag published in June. He was asked if he had a girlfriend, and he said "not yet."

The two Maria's did practice together at IW, and he was watching both of them. But trying not to be too obvious. It was cute. Now, they came onto the court he was just leaving, so I think that was all coincidence.

But to my knowledge, he's only been seen at Maria Kirilenko's matches. He was watching her qualifying matches in Miami, and was at her match against Serena at Roland Garros. No goss linking him to Maria Sharapova. And Mary Carillo reported that he is dating Maria Kirilenko.

But Rafa's English is not good, and unless either of these gals speaks Spanish, a relationship would be a bit awkward.

Anyway, I was laughing at this bit from Roddick's interview. I think he would fit in around this place quite well -- except for having to read all the bad stuff about him.

"Roddick said he wanted to see what Sharapova wore at the Wimbledon gala.

"Will it be short? Is it going to be long? Disappointed I won't get to see that," Roddick said. "I might just sneak in and crash the party. I'll bring the beer, man. Let's go."

The only thing I can't believe is that you guys haven't posted the photos of Maria from the Wimbledon Championship dinner.

I was looking at them, and my husband saw them, and said, "Who's that?" And I said, "The girl who won Wimbledon."

He said, "I'm going to have to start going to more tournaments with you."

Darn you, Maria! :( Can't very well go chasing Andy and Rafa around the premises with husband and sons in tow.

Of course, she may keep them distracted. She's got legs . . .

Hint re following photos: Now that you have gazillions in endorsements, invest in clothes that are tailored to fit and a make-up/hairstylist for gala events, where all cameras will be focused on you:  [She is under contract for a modeling agency after all, and they should have sent someone over. My husband's opposing view: "She looks as though she took a shower and put on a pretty dress. She looks great." Maybe that's the strategy re the portrayal of Maria.]

Susan, why does she get a plate and Roger gets a cup? Is she expected to cook something now?

*lol* Larry. I expect if Roger asked her cook something on it and serve it to him, she'd hit him with it. And I doubt anyone has used the Rosewater Dish to serve food.

I remember the first time Venus won it, she said "it's way cooler than the men's trophy."

But like all else at Wimbly, both trophy's have a history. And the ladies' trophy is older than the men's:

    Championship trophies

    Men's singles

The Gentlemen's Singles trophy was presented in the All England Club in 1887 and is a silver gilt cup and cover. The cup has a classical look to it, with two handles and a raised foot. A head with a winged helmet is under each handle. It stands 18 1/2 inches high and has a diameter of 7 1/2 inches.

    Ladies' singles

Instead of a cup, the winner of the women's singles title receives a silver plate, which is often called the Rosewater Dish. The trophy, which was made in 1864, is a copy of an electrotype from a pewter plate currently in the Louvre.

The plate, which measures 18 3/4 inches in diameter, features a mythological theme.

    Yeah larrhall.

Didn't you know that Maria put a buffet on for the mens final??? Roger told me she put a good spread on but said she went a bit heavy on the butter. Good selection I hear.

And Susan thanks for the pics, now put your claws away  I think it's a very nice dress

I don't suppose I could join your Husband and sons in Maria hunting by any chance? :D

Liam, I'm sure you could. But I have a feeling my husband was just kidding re spending more time at tournaments. I have to drag him there as it is. But this does add an incentive.

As for Maria, she's a gorgeous gal, and I thought she could look way more glam in the photos. I've seen much better photos of her. And she does have legs that go on forever -- I noticed that at IW. I don't make a habit of looking for those things -- but it's hard to ignore.

But as I said above, maybe the idea is not to portray her as a glam-type, but rather as a natural-looking, very attractive athlete, in high heels and a cute dress.

So on second thought, the look may be just right. If she came out looking like a movie star (which she could), well, the comparisons with Anna would start again. And there really is no comparison.

Well, it sure takes a woman's discerning eye to catch those things, Susan. Clueless guys such as myself simply notice her... eyes. Now, the dress looks a little big, is that right? And the make up? Absolutely no clue. Either way, looks like she wasn't expecting to go to the ball.

Thanks for the info, Susan. Liam, you should have invited her to West Midlands for a hit and maybe one of those beans & hot dogs (bangers?) breakfasts. I watched her practice down in the desert and she really really wallops that forehand (nor are water coolers safe)...

Exactly. That's what my husband thought, too.

She does look great, in a natural way, but not what you'd expect from a gal who is under contract with a modeling agency. She could make Britney Spears and other "current" blondes look like a dowd.

But she didn't. And if that wasn't calculated, I don't know what was.

Again, perhaps a very smart move. Keep folks focused on her tennis -- but yet let them know she has a very feminine side. Makes loads of sense.

A modelling contract? Yeah right. Modelling for JC Penney.

That is if she decides to buy a chin with all that Wimbledon money.

David, she has been under a modelling contract since 2002. Guess you've been a bit behind the tennis times there. Which is understandable, since not many folks knew who she was until last week.

But her chin looks fine to me. If it needs correction, I'm sure it could be easily done.

But no one can replicate those legs.

She is a blonde 17 YO with good looks but she certainly has no model quality. And a modeling contract doesn't mean she is necessary modeling...

Full disclosure. I didn't know who she was until I saw her play Emilie Loit in Louis Armstrong last year's at the Open. She was... pretty in pink - and lost just in time so that we could all see Agassi play in Arthur Ashe :)

So I guess I've been "behind the tennis times" too. Although I don't see having a "modelling contract" as having anything to do with actual tennis-I'm not real concerned what these people do off the court, as Susan is. Anyway, the dress IS too big. If she could fill out a bit more...now Anna K., the singles winless wonder, at least knows how to wear a dress, very much so.

I'll agree with you guys, somewhat. The modelling contract really doesn't make sense... at least when you think about runway shows and what not. But I don't think she's ever done any of that. Now, being a spokesperson for certain products (Nike, Prince, and maybe, who knows... shampoo or whatever other beauty products are available) that makes sense.

Sorry, I thought you guys kept up with stuff. My mistake.

Anyway, a simple search on a major search engine would show what I already knew -- she's a player in more ways than one.

And is about to become more of a player. But she's worthy of the hype.

I think she's the perfect model for a tennis company...the female counterpart to Safin the Adidas model. She looks gorgeous on the court, but quite awkward in this very odd lame (that's lame with an accent acute, it's a kind of fabric LOL) Whatever she & her family decide to do, she is a great success story and so good for tennis. And she's 17 years old. Amazing.
