I dont' know if Carillo said it. I think Shriver might have, but after the second set Peer to a 6 min bathroom break and one of them said, "I could have taken 4 in that amount of time."

    It was awkward.

I doubt that. On both counts: that that many people emailed or that ESPN would act.

I used to like her early in her career on CBS too. Something changed. Not sure if ESPN asked her to be more controversial, but she started saying outrageous stuff. The 'Fed tanked' line after the Murray match was it for me.

Great line - and very true.

I didn't see any of last night's crappy lineup - decided to watch my Netflix DVDs, that have been here for many days, instead.

Last night, while hearing Pam Shriver and Mary Carillo calling Serena's game, I closed my eyes and for a moment I thought I was hearing a female version of Beavis and Butthead!

Oh dude, you so hit it on the button. But give him some knee pads to make it easier to kiss Fed´s butt too. The SF will be an all ass kissing fest. When Fed hits a nice shot you hear PMac go ¨uh, that was sick!¨ I swear he shot clue glue in his pants.

I heard her commentary during the Peer match. I saw nothing wrong with it. She was kidding around making some puns, and she made the point that Peer's bathroom break was too long. What's the problem?

Face it. Sports commentary is dull and repetitive. There just isn't that much to say, especially when you have a sport with a maximum of two athletes involved. It's not like football where you can have something to say about 20 different players and there's action going on all over the field.

Hence we get looooooooooong and pointless inverviews with Pete Sampras or Nicole Vaidesova during matches. What can you do? Nothing.

    Carillo's fine.

Just don't give me that British woman who commented during the last Wimbledon. Sitting in the booth dissing Henman because Fed ran him around was unacceptable.

At one point one of the ladies said "and that is a good f-word." I think it may have been Mary saying that about the word "forward", but it made me realize that she (or someone) had said the real f-word.

Beilieve it or not, I like her. Is there anyone else that does?

Earlier Serena was heard on camera saying the F-word, and Carillo said something about her dropping the F-bomb. Later, Serena yelled "Fight!" and Carillo said she was glad to hear her using the "good" F-word.

I like Carillo okay. I thought she sounded like she was having a good time in the box, being a little silly, but they both were. I enjoyed it.

    She's fine.

Better than hearing Patrick McEnroe shout "The Dropper!" for every drop shot. Ugh.

I think she works well with Johnny Mac. Perhaps it's b/c Mac says most of the controversial stuff and she laughs and asks Mac questions and otherwise stays somewhat contained.

When Carillo went from offering his average "color" commentator to being given "play-by-play" responsibilities, ESPN went from a "so-so" decision to making a really bad decision; a big....no, make that, a HUGE mistake.

Carillo was at her absolute worst last night. Her intolerably amaturish performance included talking non-stop during points while rambling on about irrelevancies. I thought it got flat-out wierd when (at the tail end of the match), Carillo hysterically blurted repeatedly into the microphone: "Can I say something?!....can I say something?!...haven't I earned this right?!" and then when out of her way to shoehorn some positive "coincidence" involving Serena and Marat Safin's respective opponent's nationality as the most amazing happening of the 20-21st century. At that point, I actually felt (sympathetically) embarrassed--specifically for Ms. Peer, and generally-speaking, the Israeli Tennis Federation. I wasn't quite sure if Carillo was coming across as a PLO informant or as a cloying shill for the Israeli Tennis Federation, but either way, I did feel bad for Shahar Peer. I mean, listening throughout the match, I thought "doesn't this poor girl have a name other than: 'the Israeli?" Carillo seemed so hung up on the girl's nationality that she was on the verge of de-personalizing Shahar Peer altogether.

Carillo at one time, was actually tolerable, but her body of work nowadays has gone into utter freefall; she (imo) is probably the worst of the bunch and during last night's broadcast, Carillo went from increasingly wierd to flat-out creepy at times.

When I started watching she said something about not being invited to the men's late night match and during a break she could be overheard in the background saying 'i will probably be fired over this'.

    I like Carillo, but.....

I am a casual fan, but even I have noticed that Carillo is really biased toward the Williams sisters. Does anybody know why? What have they possibly said or dine to her?
I like Carillo, I really do but she has to more professional. For some reason she's infatuated with Hingis (and the beauty and the art of her game blah, blah blah) and she can't stand Serena. Style doesn't matter talent and winning does. Serena is supremely gifted.

I don't care that much but it slightly annoying. If I were Serena Williams fan I would be pi$$ed, though.

I think she makes the Fish puns around 5-2 first set, and then around 5-5 in the third set you can cleary hear her say "I'm probably going to get fired after this match"

I thought it was hilarious....homegirl was hitting the same crack Paula Abdul has

Do you mean biased AGAINST the Williamses? Biased toward may mean the opposite of what I think you are trying to say.

My guess would be that she feels slighted by the Williamses. She is a hard core American fan, and to see Serena (and sometimes Venus) waste their talent by not being 100% dedicated to the game ticks her off. That's my analysis anyway.

[and thanks to chgpp for clearing up the f-word incident - I was half-listening. )

Am temporarily brain dead due to cold but she also made a very silly statement about 2 players...the first one I forgot, but the second one was about Serena being "Peerless"....the other was a male player I believe and a "play" on his name....I could hear her throughout the match in the background....why didn't she turn off her mike? Think she was also told, in no uncertain terms, to quit talking about the "best friends" match coming up.....think she was just blabbing away, as usual:confused:

Mary also suffering from severe case of helmet hair....must have used every can of hair spray in Australia:confused:

I haven't watched Roddick and Fish match but

to me, she is generally the best commentator proven in very very long term.

She offers great insights consistently over many many years now.
For example, in 90's, when everybody worried modern racquets make serve
    too powerful, she insisted that
    1. serve has been always the most powerful weapon since
we started serving overhead with or without modern graphite racquet.
    2. Ground strokes are the one that are really revolutionized and will
change the game in th future.

Look what happened now. She was really only commentator who instsed
that point. Even now she offers different insights than all the other
commentators. We need her for tennis on TV, IMHO.

She is there to commentate on the match, not host a talk show. I still wish there was a way to mute the commentary and just hear the crowd and the ball.

The only way the booth could of gotten worse last night is if they let enberg join them.

Cliff is without a doubt the worst in the booth. Personally I find ATP master series guys in TTC to have the most insightful comments(JB, Jason Goodall). Cliff totally repeats himself with the same old stories. Every time you come back from a commercial break he needs to tell you were you are and what the score is. Maybe you like this, I personally can't stand it. And if I heard the story of how Nadal grow up on a small island and is friends with Carlos story again, I think I will just shoot myself.

mc's major problem is that she never shuts up. her second problem is her against stance on shotspot/hawkeye.
cliff's problem is that he's too defensive and gets cranky, stutters/mumbles.
my favorite commentators are patrick mcenroe, john barrett (took a while to get used to his english accent though). chris fowler and dick enberg and guys like them are okay would be better if they actually had played tennis.
pam shriver is fun, mary joe can be a bit boring but it depends on who she's matched up with.
and i hate murphy (not luke) jensen.

I hate MC too, but i'd take her anyday over that shmerler women, she's so annoying! She pronounced sharapova's name like "sha-rap-pra-va". Also she kept calling the players "kid". Like, "I'd be pissed too if this kid kept drop shotting me"

Come to think of it, MC kept calling players "kid" too. It'd disrespectful, and she did it 500 times

I didn't hear Carillo drop any F-bombs. Rather, it was Serena Williams who launched one during the second set, I believe, when Mary Carillo commented, "And Serena drops the F-bomb."

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't hear her actually say it. But I heard Serena yell it on court, clear as a bell.

It's too bad Jmac can't commentate on every tennis match.

I don't think MC is that bad. (That pun towards the end of the williams/peer match was ridiculous though. The one where she compared serena to safin. Did anyone else catch that?)

I think that's the case... i'm not sure why she said she assumed she was going to be fired after that... I heard it while i was stringing, but I figured it was someone next to the court speaker or something....

LOL. You got it twisted... but that happens. Actually, I just rewatched this, and it was Pam Shriver who said it was a really long bathroom break. She then said "I could have 4 in that time." 4 bathroom breaks presumably. She did not say I could have "taken" 4. Big difference. :D

I've always wondered why do we say we're going to "take" one when we actually leave one...

The first time I really noticed that Mary was, well, not very objective, was the US Open qf's in '03 with Agassi vs. Coria. Wow, she made it known that she didn't like Coria and expressed it every time she was allowed to commentate a Coria match.
The biggest problem with Mary is not being objective. She picks favorites and hails them throughout the match until they lose.
But the worst...was last year during the French Open when she kept saying "Uncle Toni!" in this odd voice, and laughed every time she said it like it was just the funniest thing. It was terrible.
I like Cliff, even thoug he always gets the score wrong. He and Mary don't seem to get along, and it's been a while since I've heard them commentating together. I think maybe once recently.

    meh

I think Mary is ok, I don't mind her. A lot of you get irritated by her, but it would take much more bother me. And she does say many good things, like the other day she explained the Reverse Forehand taught by Robert Lansdorp.

She and Cliff both kept referring to Andy MURRAY as RODDICK. And Carillo's constant Fish jokes led me to believe that she had sampled the White Tail a little too much.

Hey guys, could someone answer this for me.....If you were watching the Serena Williams vs Peer, during the 3rd set at 5-6...Carillo seemed to take her mic off and say "Im going to be fired after this anyway", but you could still hear her say this even though she took the mic off. If anyone missed it and has a tape of that match, check it out. So im wondering what exactly happen to make her make this comment (joking i assume)?

That's how I feel about Blake's story. I was so glad Fena knocked him out so I didn't have to hear it anymore. What's it been, like three years now, we've had to listen to it?

I still miss "Firey" Fred Stolle.Carillo doesn't bother me so much but I do think she seems a bit wacked-out at times down under. It started with her hair and has gone down from there.Could be a Paula Abdul situation but that's 100% speculation.
