Steve, don't you mean the Yellow Tail?

Hell, I kinda liked the way they were cutting up. They so seldom do it any more and the match did go through some slumps. Why not goof off a little?

He doesn't do the AO. Will probably be back doing NBC's tape delayed weekend coverage of RG.

Stolle did Hopman Cup. It was really nice to hear him again.

OK now we've had 2 women's matches since the infamous match w/Williams and Peer...no Carillo. The first one was called by Cliffy and Pam, the second called by Enberg and Mary Joe...so does anybody know....DID MC get fired?

Oh well, guess that means no. Did she mention any "lapses of taste" on her part or did she seem to be back on the meds? Just curious...she really was a basket case during that Williams/Peer match....Thanks

She seemed fine, though I can't compare with her behavior during the women's matches because I don't watch them or pay that much attention when they are on.

OMG I know that gets so irritating. It would be normal to hear him say it once, maybe twice as a joke. But every drop shot you hear him go "THE DROPPA!!"

And about Carillo, what puns did she use with Fish's name? Stuff like Roddick "reeling" him in a whatnot? And if anyone could upload the "i'm gonna get fired" clip onto YouTube it'd be nice to hear it.

Personally I would really enjoy having pros commentate. This is Federer and Henman commentating on a fun match, they're absolutely hilarious, they sound wasted out of their minds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfaj93n5k9E

Some of the funny puns about Fish's name made by MC....

The Roddick Fish match is still on the way, I hear fans are Scallop-ing tickets in the parking lot as we speak, or something to that matter....

Then she said, We will see if Mardy Fish can mussel his way to the semi's

And also, If I remember, apologized and said she was trying to re-grouper

Then Pam Shriver asked MC if she had become Clammed up

Her constant pointless jabber, ruined viewing the Nadel match .
My wife hates to hear her talking thru all the points.
Is it possible to sync the ABC (Aust'l) on internet commentary to the espn telecast?

She used to be the one who doesn't talk during the important moments, which I think she at least does that from time to time when she thinks the moment deserves it (for example, some later part of 3rd set of Nadal vs Gonzalez match). However, She joined the trend of making tennis broadcast into a talk show which espn wants for quite a while.
    So, what's new?
She's biased? I can't find any commentator who isn't. Well, she could be annoying if you want sugarcoating every prima donna in wta. At least, she doesn't make sniding comments on journeyman players, usually show some respect for the game, and from time to time makes good observation and comments. She's not as horrible as some others in the espn booth.

I don't agree. During Martina's and Kim's match -- which was a good match to watch -- he was blathering about something stupid. (I think it was his clothes ... seeking opinion of his Booth Mate.) Shut-up during the point...!

Carillo and Pam both swoon all over Shriekapova so much it makes me sick. I'm so sick of hearing them try to dramatize her mental toughness ... while (mostly) ignoring how she cheats with her dad's coaching. Grrr!

    Dick Enbeng ... good commentator?!?!?

I'll take anyone (even Pam Shriver or Carillo) over Enberg. I'm actually freaking depressed right now thinking about how Enberg's idiotic "oh my's" are going to ruin the brilliant Federer Roddick semi.

Seriously, Enberg has absolutely nothing to add in terms of *real* commentary. Almost every other commentator has actually been a professional and been around a game.

I already couldn't stand her as a commentator, and I didn't think should could possibly get any worse after the last few commentations at slams, but she did. Could the puns be any worse, I mean can't this woman figure out that she isn't funny and learn when to shut up? Obviously not.

So lets all give her one last big round of applause for that wonderful Fish Fry comment. Good now that this is done, please, will you just fire her already and get rid of her.

Yep. Too bad. I wish they had someone good, like Cahill for example. Even PMac might have been ok. I happen to like Drysdale, even with his way of providing the same information again and again; he seems like a orator next to Dick Enberg.

Where did McEnroe and Drysdale go? I wish they were there instead of carillo last night chanting 'it takes 2 players to bear federer' every few minutes. She didnt' stop talking throughout the second set, absolute non-stop. And what's with the 'Don't get me started' line she uses always? When can she be stopped????

  20. Morrissey

Yeah, I know that ¨don´t get me started¨ crap she says every day. She´s become a caricature of herself. She fawns too much over Fed for a supposedly objective commentator and worse yet we never hear the sound of the ball being struck because she´s constantly yakking over it. It´s funny, I think she talks more during the rallies as opposed to when they´re just standing around for a towel or collecting balls to serve. We honestly should sent our hate mail to espn and pray for her pink slip. Please, put in a more objective and less talkative commentator. Maybe someone from the uk or australia who actually knows how to do a tennis match the right way. Oh yeah Vrtika, sorry for the spelling, is that (IRS) Irwin R. Scheister on your avatar? He was such a funny character in the WWF back in the day. Oh the good ol days of wrestling.

Commentators here only state the obvious, but not often. Other than that, their quite normal.

She did make one funny comment last night. When the racquet flew out of Roddicks hand, she said, " I'm sure Andy is surprised Federer didn't get it back into play". That was funny!

Oher than that she made me puke 4 times.

Did anyone notice how MC was laffing at Nadal during his match with Gonzo? She laffed when Nadal started loosing the third set. She was unprofessional and should have turned off her mic.

here is what bothered me about her comments on the rest of the field and what they need to do to beat Federer:

She basically stated players need to be super agressive and get to the net. I guess serve and volley. Here is the issue I have....where are the S&V's? Nadal does not do it? She just makes little sense at times.

The players poop their pants out there. See Roddick!

More than anything it's her non-stop chatter and irritating comments. Even if she had poor knowledge of the game that can be forgiven but to act like she knows everything when she doesn't irks me.

Mary Carillo needs to shut up once in a while. Does she ever get tired of talking? The other day, I thought even Luke Jensen was getting sick of her. Luke was often contradicting her views and comments, and just ignored her.

Carillo does suck, indeed. What about Dick Enberg too? I'm not too wild about his commentating either.

I say ESPN holds an "American Idol" style competition to find the next tennis commentator. I kid you not when I say I think I could call a tennis match better than either Edberg or Carillo does.

  32. I'll take Carillo ANY day over Enberg.

Did anyone else hear the enticing history lesson he gave about Eucalyptus trees during one match??? Even P-mac was looking at him like.. " you got to be freekin kidding me".

I think Carillo is totally right about the SHOTSPOT thing. Only when a player loses a match they should have won because they couldn't challenge a bad call because they had used them up... then people will see it should just be an automatic 10 second check on close calls between points. Nadal takes 3x that amount of time to fix his socks and pick his wedgie....

Anyway... keep Carillo... put Enberg back in storage... I am SURE he smells like mothballs!

Maybe you're right. I thought it was Baghdatis' match but I could be wrong. Either way, he sounds like he's slipping into a battle with Alzheimers or something and can't remember what he's supposed to be commenting on.

it was the Ancic match I believe...then the following day he was commenting on how one of the player's should feel at home because his father owned a bread mill in California...then went on to say "pardon me, but there's a lot of 'bread' at stake here today!"

    OMG indeed

For Carillo to cover her mic up, and say "i am going to get fired after this match anyway" is beyond unprofessional. can't you just wait until the commercial break, mary? and this is not the first time, that she had tried to cover her mic up, and say stuff, and got leaked on the air. which begs me to think, what are the producers doing in the booth? for them not to say anything to her when it first happened, is inexcusable. her antics are getting weirder and weirder. does anybody still remember when she tries so hard to be creative, and used the term "dropping into the open water" when describing a sampras' drop shot?

I agree with the other poster that I do miss the old days of Cliff Drysdale and "Fiery" Fred Stolle. Cliff is very sensitive as we all know, but when Fred used to make fun of Cliff, those were the good days, I also miss when Vitas Geralitis was on that broadcast team. I used to be able to stand Mary somewhat, but she is really starting to lose it, kind of like Keith Jackson in his later days.

"American Idol Tennis Commentators" is indeed a program that they should launch and find some new blood for all this madness.

vitas gerulitis would be a better commentator than carillo TOMORROW (and yes, I am aware he has been dead for several years)

also, her assertion that other players can't compete with Roger by "burying the needle" is ridiculous - what are they supposed todo...play within themselves and wait for federer to pick them apart? their only chance is to go balls-out and hope frothe best

she is just a joke, beyond a travesty at this point. Enberg is a complete talking head and full of cliches, but he is sort of grandfatherly. I was p!ssed when ESPN hired him for tennis (had enough of him during NBC's treacly Wimbledon broadcasts), but he has grown on me enough to overlook his more senior moments.

Both the commetators were driving me crazy last. I woke up at 12:30 to watch Fed and A-Rod play, not to listen to their dribble. I love to hear the ball being struck, but I was so irritated by their commentary that I muted my TV. Listening to them talk and during the point was torturous. And Carillo's voice, yuck, it irritating too. It would have been different if their commentary added something to the match, but it didn't.

I didn't enjoy the match at all last night. Not just because A-Rod spent an hour and half in the woodshed either. I taped the match last night and I can't even stand to watch it cause I have to listen to them again.

Hey rule of thumb, when commentating a match, LESS IS MORE!

I'd be ok with her if she didn't have to talk during points. I like some of her witty comments, like the one where Roddick hits the ball out of the stadium and she said that its the only ball roger couldn't return for a winner.

Mary Carillo is drunk when she commentates!

Tell me about it! Me and my wife couldn't take it anymore and muted the TV during the match. I think Mary downs a bottle of Bacardi 151 before she commentates each match. I can't enjoy watching the matches when she tries to be witty and rambles on and on about the most idiotic things.

We should start a petition and send it to ESPN to keep her from commentating future matches!

What a pleasure to listen to Mary

Jo. She's low key. She isn't obnoxious. She isn't rude by not babbling on during the point. She doesn't slobber over the incredible shot making. But above all, she isn't in love with her own voice. Maybe the other Mary can learn something here. This does't bode well to see who ESPN assigns to announce what could be a spectacular Men's final.

What's with the Serena stare down? Has she always played with a chip. Maybe she reads to much TT.
