I thought Chris and Chris made a good team today but did Mary Carillo get dropped down the totem pole at ESPN? I thought she used to get the color chair at ESPN for women's finals. Don't get me wrong, I don't miss her.

Not enough Boris. His searing insights were much missed.

I think BB is a total knob as a commentator, myself.

When Djokovic served to start the third set against Murray, down two sets to love, Boris sagely noted, "Djokovic is vulnerable."

See, that's the comedy that's not there with the other commentators. The king of stating the blindingly obvious. Can't beat it.

Agreed. I will also say the same for Navratilova.

Boris Becker likes to imitate John Madden's, "Usually the team that scores the most points, wins the game". Except he does it every few points

Chris and Chris are terrible. Sorry, but she's a prude (I was always a fan, btw) and he still asks more questions than he does anything else (he has no business doing tennis).

ESPN commentators talk and talk all the time because they are catering to a North American audience who likes that blah blah gossip stuff. It is very irritating to the viewer who knows about tennis and just wants them to stick to the match.

Was she commentating at the French? Because I don't remember Pat McEnroe being there and now he's showed up at Wimbledon so perhaps they substituted for one another.
    I prefer Carillo over PMac.

I used to like Chris fowler but he got on my nerves this year. I prefer only former pros as announcers. I think Pmac is about the best there is. Brad Gilbert is very good too!

Boris Becker seems to have a speech impediment. Smart guy though.

Tbuggleboy, I have liked T Robinson and Billl Mcatee play by play but Chris Fowler is very SKILLED, also. And Chris Evert a prude? How old are you? The randiest player in the WTA in her day. Plus,I am pleased to read the comments regarding BBs shortcomings. Even worse than Jimmy Connors.

Mary asked to be released from her ESPN contract over a year ago. She still appears on the TTC and also NBC/CBS.

I heard John Feinstein on a local radio show (Sports Junkies) describe her falling out w/ ESPN. It had something to do w/ commentary on Serena, but I can't remember exactly what it was. She stood her ground & asked to be released from her contract.

As much as I dislike her as a commentator, you have to respect her for standing up for what she believes in.

Mary Carillo is horrible. Thankfully she's gone. We had to suffer through way too many years listening to Carillo and Enberg,

Chris Fowler is great. Hope he keeps doing it.

OK, but hasn't ESPN closed the networks out of the 4 slams?

Agreed. MC is/was an outstanding commentator/analyst and has provided some great color and insight to the game. Seems genuinely nice/personable as well -- had some limited contact with her. Others that have met and spoken with her say that she'll talk your ear off if you engage her in conversation -- even if she doesn't really know you.

MC also provided commentary/analysis for the Olympics and sports other than tennis. Despite the opinions of some on the TW forums, Mary was highly regarded by those in the industry. Sports Illustrated picked her as the "Best Game Analyst" for the past decade...

"Honest, thoughtful and always prepared, Carillo has excelled in a sport that far too often soft-pedals commentary because of the many conflicts of interests and relationships. She provides a reporter's eye in the booth."

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/magazine/specials/2000s/12/09/deitsch.broadcasting/index.html

Mary apparently left ESPN due to a "philosophical difference"...

"It doesn't take a leap to surmise that the philosophical difference rested in Carillo believing the tone and tenor of ESPN's coverage was closer to cheerleading than reporting. Sources told SI.com that Carillo was distressed by a culture that frowned on critical analysis of the top players on tour, particularly American stars... "

Carillo thrashed Gilles Simon for his stand on less prize money for women tennis players. Her colleagues, John McEnroe and Ted Robinson said nothing. She ranted for a little bit and then moved on to other topics because it was awkward to be the only one there who criticized Simon.

NBC still has the French. CBS still has the US Open for two more years. ESPN takes over in 2015.
