    ===================================================
    McEnroe v Borg at the Newport 2010 grass event
    Special exhibition with Mac and Bjorn both playing wood rackets
    ===================================================

    John McEnroe will play a Maxply McEnroe Fort or Wilson Kramer PS
    Bjorn Borg will play a Donnay Borg Pro.

    Negotiations are in progress.
    Will try to get The Tennis Channel to sponsor and broadcast this event.

    Cheers,
    Joe

    That should make some very interesting television. To play tennis the way those guys do at 50+ is outstanding. Both are still fit, and their tennis IQ's are through the roof. I'm curious to see what kind of "action" they can get on the ball with the wood frames, and I'm also curious to know what strings/tension each will use. I can't wait to watch it, at least on replay. Thanks for letting us know Joe!

    Will be interesting to see if they go with poly strings now or go with the classic natural gut that they both played soo great with in the past. John played real loose like 50 lbs and Bjorn was way tight like 70 lbs.

    A little lower and a little higher, actually, John was in the mid 40s and Bjorn was in the 80s (with some reports of 90s). :shock:

    I think Johnny Mac has been beating him pretty regularly as a senior no?

    yeah. the kind of game that borg plays loses its effectiveness the older he gets whereas, the kind of game that mcenroe plays doesn't lose much, especially when he's playing against a player his own age.

    Didn't Borg beat McEnroe the last time they played? In China last November, if I remember rightly.

    Edit: Just checked. Borg beat McEnroe 6-4, 6-4 in Chengdu, China on the 7th November 2009.

    I believe that Borg was even higher, closer to 80 lbs. I think Mac started out around 60, but then became a convert to low tensions in the upper 40s.

    Yes, agree Borg strung even higher and Mac went even lower than my "like" estimates. Ofcouse today, Im sure they will be both closer and if they decide to go with a hybrid using poly or copoly then the tensions will really change. With wood rackets, it will be interesting to see what they would decide to use ?

    Yep - McEnroe wasn't as reliant as Borg on his lateral movement, so that would certainly favor the former at this stage of their lives. However, as another poster said, Borg did win their last match, so hopefully it will be a competitive affair between the pair. I'm excited to see some wooden rackets in action in high definition!

    Borg changed he wrist motion when he changed to graphite... He used to do that technique because of his experience with Table Tennis. Coming back to wood might be harder for Borg than McEnroe. Since McEnroe is the best with a wooden racquet. Hopefully someone posts this match on youtube since I can't get there. It would be a nice addition to all of their other matches.

    It would be a good match if Borg had any foot speed left...but he doesn't...Mac's game has slowed...but not at the same decline Borg has experienced...If Mac puts out 100% it will be very ugly...

    It would be nice to get the top current players to play an event like this but that will never happen.
