Not defending the guy, because what he said is indefensible. But, wasn't he drunk at the time? Don't people say and do stupid things when they are drunk?

Alcohol is often a truth serum, people say what they really think but would normally never say when sober.
I've been drunk many times & been around other drunks. Yes, much stupidity all around, but saying random anti-semitic stuff is on another level & can't be dismissed as the "alcohol talking."
And Mel was only a .12, which really isn't that drunk(esp for an alcoholic), he knew what he was saying. I think his career is over. He wants to meet with Jewish leaders and apologize, but I don't think that he can repair the damage(esp since his father is on record as saying that the Holocaust didn't really happen, there is a history of this stuff in his family)

Thanks for the clarification. I've never been drunk. Don't even drink, never have. Both of my parents were/are alcoholics, and I witnessed first hand the effects.

Sad situation. Looks like he is indeed finished. It will be interesting to see if his independent productions (financed by himself) will succeed. He has a new flick due out any day about the Aztecs. It just might flop.

I've said plenty of things I don't believe in when I was drunk. Hard to know, without more details and facts, just what the real story is there. I found the antisemitic remarks curious and worth exploration. The Passion ranks as one of the great movies in recent years, but a shame this will color its memory.

I always wonder about this stuff because if someone believes something ... well, isn't he or she entitled? You can't coerce someone to believe "correctly." I mean, just as long as he or she doesn't act on it to hurt others ... so what? I don't believe "The Passion" was anti-Semitic, although I say that as someone who is not Jewish. A Jew might think differently. I'm in the privileged position not to be affected. If Mel Gibson is a jerk ... so what? A friend of mine had a close encounter with Gibson where he made a very crude remark about her friend's breasts. Her friend was pregnant at the time. She was hurt by that remark, and that's not good. But if Mel Gibson thinks (and his father has made comments denying the Holocaust) that the Jews are "responsible for all the wars the world (Darfur? Congo?)," so what? He's dead wrong. And it's a hurtful remark ... and he's an idiot for making it. But as long as he's not at the negotiating table with Israelis and Palestinians, and as long as there is no detectable bias in his movies ... so what? This is what he thinks. Doesn't he have the right to be wrong?

Amazing..I feel sorry for Mel. The guy screw up , like most of us will one way or another... and everything he said and did, ends up being slapped around the media for pure Shock and reaction value. It is so extreme that even in a tennis board, this guy's screw up ends up on.. Like none of us in some circunstances, think or imagine crazy things, that can be just as controversial. Yet, because it is "Mel Gibson" a celebrety. Everybody gathers around to see the
"car accident" and judge how bad this guy's screw up was...

That's what happens when you are a phony hypocrite. It always comes out eventually. Just add him to the long list of people so full of themselves and preaching to everyone how things should be and in reality they are a pathetic mess. I have to say I saw it coming a mile away. Reminds me of Bill O'Reilly.

Brace yourself for whatever happens to Ann Coulter. She's next.

He likes to say its the "alcohol" in his head  that's saying the ugly things, when we all know that its the bigot in his head that's doing the talking. Why doesn't he just come forward and say, "I hate jews." I would actually respect him more if he didn't run from his own truth

Why doesn't he just come forward and say "I hate Jews"? Because he works in an industry that puts a premium on public "Image", and the image of an overtly bigoted, anti-Semitic actor wouldn't sit very well with the public and the media (which in turn, would cause any funding for his movies to dry up-it makes him a "bad risk" for the studios and investors).

Gibson did exactly what his PR flack instructed him to do...he made a public apology, chalked it all up to "alcoholism" and now he's doing the standard, almost cliched by now Hollywood penance...entering rehab. That he's asked to meet with Jewish leaders is a little added drama, but really, it's a joke. The Jewish leaders should just laugh and say, "Hell, Mel, we've always known what you are. It's a free country. Believe what you want. Only...we don't expect to be seeing you soon at a theatre near us."

For these people (Hollywood celebrities) it's ALL part of the act.

ya it's a complete joke like I said they're acting like he pulled a gun on the officer. OMG he made anti-semitic marks while drunk.....if people take it that harshly like it's a rare occurence when someone feels this way about another culture I feel sorry for ya.

A wise Christian once posted (in the God thread):

Christians fall down -sin- everyday. At least I do. I pray and ask for forgiveness everyday. My sinning has dropped big time, but hasn’t stopped. It’s the running into sin with no regards for Him that isn’t good.

Mel is just a good example of a God fearing man who fell down. Now he has to dust himself off and get on with things.

Also, how do you know he wasn't joking or anything? I don't know all the circumstances involved here, but lots of things I say to my friends probably could be taken out of context and make me seem like a real bad guy but I don't mean a lot of what I say. Some people think alcohol is a truth serum while others think it's just a very unreliable serum.

And keep in mind that Martin Luther himself was anti-Semitic. Christians do bad things sometimes just as athiests, agnostics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, etc. do. Religious people just tend to get more flak for it...

Somehow I don't think Mel Gibson really thinks all wars in this world are because of Israel.

Making anti-Semitic (and don't forget the offensive sexist remark to the female officer) remarks to strangers, and more importantly, COPS is not anyone's idea of a "joke". This isn't like "...things you say to your friends". Believe me, spanky, he wasn't "joking".

I really hope the issue dies a quick death, like Mel Gibson's acting career.

ya I don't know that much about him besides he's a great actor but in general you can't put it above people to judge from a few people they've met. I guess since hes highly religious like u said it wouldn't be the case oh well its being way overblown all over cnn etc like its going to change the world if he hates jews or not.

It's worse for Mel Gibson because of his father -- who's somewhat of a holocaust denier and thinks that Jews have a diabolical plan to take over the world -- and Passion of the Christ, which a lot of Jews resented for the way it portrayed "their" role in the crucifixion of Christ. Mel's dad rejects Vatican 2, feels that every pope since then is illegitimate, and the heretical ideas introduced into Catholicism during that event was orchestrated by Jews. Mel's dad is an anti-semite in the strictest sense of the term. And Mel hasn't done much to denounce him, even having said at one time that his dad has never lied to him. So even though any a-list actor would probably get creamed if they had done a similar thing, Mel was already skating on very thin ice. I think if it was a big actor with no anti-semitic past, or perceived A-S past, Jewish leaders would welcome an apology and request for a meet, and they could probably get a lot of PR mileage out of this hypothetical person in way of preaching tolerance.

Many Jews were very very upset by Passion of the Christ. The only time my Jewish ex-roommate and I ever had a truly tense argument was over Passion of the Christ, which I defended only to the extent that I felt a person should be allowed to make that movie... which was terrible by the way. And we'd been friends for 6 years. Only time. I don't know if I've ever seen him so upset as he was when talking about that movie.

Okay, so one can argue that Mel Gibson should be allowed to bigot and that's true, so long as his bigotry doesn't hurt anybody. And Jews should be allowed to hate Mel Gibson for it and to boycott a bigot if they want.

I saw the Passion movie twice and both times searched. . .hard. . . for bits of antisemitism. Did not see any. If it was there, it was too subtle for me. I think perhaps the Jewish sensitivity to the movie was all about the fact that it reminds the broad public about the role of the Pharisees in Jesus' crucifixion. By the way, I was very impressed with the guy who was Pontius Pilate. . . thought he did a good job with the whole philosophical "what is truth" line.

With respect to Gibson, I've said PLENTY of stupid things when drunk and trying to goad or irritate people. But given all of his personal history, it makes me wonder. I'd like to see the verbatim transcript there. And yet another part of me thinks, "what does it matter"? and another part thinks, "so now we're nosing around like thought police after people, PC ****s."

I was wondering how Mel knew the officer was a Jew. After his tirade against Jews he said to officer Mee, "Are you a Jew?" It's not like his name was Abraham Rabinawitz, his name is John Mee. How did Mel know? Does he have Jewdar?

I would have tasered his ass. And posted the video on Youtube.

Joking? What sick individual gets wasted, gets IN A CAR, puts his life and the life of others in danger, and then jokes about how much he hates jews and how they are the cause of evil in the world? This may seem stupid, but Hitler said the same kind of stuff in the 1930's. To make excuses for him is insane. He messed up, big time, and he deserves what he gets. Crazy thing is, people aren't that uspet about the drunk driving...that's just as bad as anything esle. What if he had hit and killed someone? Would he blame that on jews as well? Gimme a break.

It wasn't only Me's dad who questioned the Holocaust. Mel himself said it was mostly "a numbers game" meaning that it did happen, but the number of people killed has been greatly exaggerated, a popular theory for today's lunatic.

^ Absolutely agree. Racism is so strange. My friends in the mid west talk poop about black people all the time but they're totally cool hanging out with black people. My one friend was going off on affirmative action not long ago, how white people are getting totally gipped, "white people like us" he said. I'm Asian, but that's what he said. I always knew I was a Twinkie but I had no idea I was a cheese sandwich.

I just wish you'd put "Christians" in quotes ... or used the phrase "so-called Christians."

But your main thrust is accurate. (Ever see the bumper sticker, "My Boss is a Jewish Carpenter"?) It probably frustrates many of those "Christians" you reference.

Okay, I'll post again, since my previous response to this was censored/deleted.

Is being "...somewhat of a Holocaust denier..." anything like being "somewhat" dead, or "somewhat" pregnant or "somewhat" of a KKK member? Why, exactly, are you scared to make a simple statement without the phoney qualifier, e.g. "He IS a Holocaust denier."?
