Men grunt just as much as women

Women get a bad press for all their shrieking, but men are actually just as noisy. The only difference is that the women are higher pitched and this seems more annoying to the viewer.

If TV stations could lower the pitch of women's shrieking, viewers wouldn't be so annoyed. Nothing can save the live fans though.

No one says that men don't grunt, Granollers is disturbing to listen to. I think Carlos Berloq is another one that is painful to listen to.

But nothing is worse than a Sharapova-Azarenka shriek off.

Some of the women already have a masculine grunt and it still annoys me a lot more the noise produced by men. I guess I can't stand masculine women. This is why my girlfriend is a feminine women.

The top men are not as loud as the top women. That is the key difference. Granollers can grunt all he likes or whatever it is he does, but nobody would watch his matches regardless if he let out that ungodly noise or not. Granollers is not a top player so naturally not as many people care about him. Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray all grunt regularly, but there is a big difference between a grunt and a scream, and the problem is the biggest screams come from the people you might want to watch once in a while like Sharapova or Azarenka.

I agree. however I think that outright screaming of sharapova or azarenka is much more disturbing that the grunting (like schiavonne for example).

I mean Maria and Victoria literally scream on top of their lungs. I don't think any man on tour does hit 100+ decibels lika Maria does.

Even Guga who is probably the most stylish Player ever was grunting:).

It is the extended amount of time after they hit the ball that bothers me about Sharapova and Azarenka. To me not allowing the other player to hear the ball come off the court is cheating.

Yes, although the power he puts in his forehand is unusual. And he doesn't do it when he hits a backhand.

I have to admit, Nadal annoys me, to say the least, but i can live with his grunting.

I think there should be rules against it because it annoys people, it certainly annoys me. The problem is how to set the rules and how to enforce it. A simple db meter is not going to do it because players move over the court and the background noise is variable. There is no easy solution.

The women take it to levels where it is just outright screaming, not just grunting, and the higher pitch makes it 100 times more annoying as well.

It was been addressed by the WTA. Their solution is to do nothing about the current crop of screamers, like Sharapova, Azarenka, but to focus on the next generations that are coming since it isn't so ingrained in them yet to shriek. Basically, they are dealing with it the wussy way to not upset the Shara/Aza etc.

Btw, my good friend works at IMG academy and sees Sharapova practice daily. He said she never grunts/shrieks in practice.

They can focus forever but looking at a problem does not solve it. You need rules to enforce things.
Everywhere I see young female players grunt (males grunt too but far less in my experience) so if anything it is getting worse than better.

At least this is how it seems to me...

The grunts the men make are in most cases reflective of the effort they are putting into a shot. For example they don't grunt when hitting a drop shot.

Whereas in the case of several of the women, the shriek comes no matter what shot is being hit.

This makes me think that for some of the women it is an intentional and conscious thing to shriek that loudly, and not just something that happens as a result of effort.

And that's something that bugs me, in addition to just being irritated by the noise itself.

Sharapova's grunts are used as a distraction against her opponent. It's a dirty tactic because she never grunts when she's practicing. That's one more reason why it's more annoying.

And the top men don't grunt nearly as much, except Nadal. And Fed doesn't grunt at all. That's the one aspect of his game that I like.

    lol can't believe this thread.

There's a difference when the men do it. First not the majority of men grunt. There is a small pool of men who do so. Most of all women grunt. On top of that, they do it for the sound of intimidation. They even do it when the slice the ball!!! I've seen college men hit harder than professional women and they don't make a peep. When women do it, they want everyone to know who's on court.

He does grunt, especially on clay, second serves and when hitting high balls.

    He grunts like a goat.

    Quite fitting really.

The men grunt, the women scream. Has an ATP pros grunt ever been registered at 100+ decibels like Sharapovas ahem...grunt....was at Wimbledon one year? I doubt it. Grunting when hitting the ball is one thing...there is no need to scream like a banshee.

And the tour can very easily put in behavior modification plans with punishments that would pretty quickly curb the behavior or at least cut down on it. They just don't want to anger their stars by fining them of banning then from tournaments. If they did that I think people would pretty quickly get the message. Lindsay Davenport hit the ball just as hard as Maria off the ground and I never remember her screaming like she was being murdered or something.

It's a shame because as much as I jokingly rag on women's tennis, it is perhaps the highest quality women's pro sport there is. And the shrieking pandemic makes it unwatchable.

The grunting and shrieking issues for tennis are as bad as the nba's flopping problem, and the powers that be seem equally clueless to stop it.

It is funny people make excuses for the men their grunting might be a deeper pitch BUT they are extremely loud.

Nadal uses his grunting as a form of intimidation he screams really loud on an important point, and other points he's quiet as a church mouse.

Nadal and Ferrer's French Open final, was disgusting, they are so loud LOL!

Verdasco, Tsonga, Djokovic, Wawrinka, so many of the men grunt loud.

To just pick on the women is sexism and a joke by the male posters on this forum.

No it is not far fetched the media and tennis fans always complain about female grunting yet Nadal, Ferrer, Verdsaco, Murray, Djokovic, Del Potro, Lopez, Haas, Wawrinka, and numerous male tennis players grunt LOUD.

I think Andy Murray even complained about a guy from Argentina at Indian Wells this year I think his last name is Berlocq who has a very loud grunt.

I've seen the threads about 'Grunting and WTA' and things like that. I haven't seen any threads about the males because the consensus perceives it as normal.

It's just the typical gender-role bias in this topic.

I've watched a live Nadal match; he wasn't as loud as he sounds on TV.

Haven't watched the women live though, so I can't speak on that front.

Also, the men don't grunt on slices and drop shots.

Some women grunt after the swing, and vary their pitch depending on the match. Some grunt even louder at crucial moments. Nadal on the other hand actually becomes quiet at crucial points, but it could be similar to me - when I need to concentrate 100%, I hold my breath.

You have to admit, grunting can be ridiculous at times:

Wrong, you don't see threads on the men grunting because its just that, a grunt, which is not that annoying. The women take it to levels where its an actual scream. Watch that Larcher De Brito video above, she's actually still shrieking/screaming when the ball hits on Kuznetsova's side. In the Sharapova video the crowd was laughing because the screaming was so ridiculous.

Go play your gender bias card somewhere else because there's a big difference between the men and women.

Has a male tennis player ever had a grunt break the 100 decibel meter?
Sharapova was recorded as reaching 101 decibels for her grunt
Larcher Due Brito has reached 109 decibels

For reference a lions roar averages at 110 decibels...so Larcher De Brito grunts about as load as a lion roars. I have never heard anywhere of a male tennis player making a noise equal to a lions roar when hitting a tennis ball.

Nick Bolletieri calls it exhaling...sorry but no it's ridiculous.

Perhaps I should have went into further detail. The young juniors are being coached to grunt as well. I can evaulate that current ATP men weren't taught to do that.

It's only a matter of time before ATP players start to shriek.

Like others have already said, you have to know the distinction between grunting and screaming. Most grunting men actually grunt with a few screaming. Most grunting women just scream, with a few actually grunting.

I've seen women that grunt on VOLLEYS and DROPSHOTS. :)

    Now that's ridiculous.

The difference between the tours is that men's grunts are low pitched and tolearable where women shrieks are high pitched.

Even the a meeting between the worst grunters on tour can't match the torture of a Sharapova-Azarenka match in terms of auditory violation.

There was that portuguese chick that sounded like she got stabbed everytime she hit a ball, she made pova look tame in comparison.

I've noticed that the roland garros broadcasts muted their mikes during sharapova matches (perhaps during other matches as well: azarenka's?). Either that, or sharapova became quiet as a mouse specifically for that tournament.

Anyone else notice this? This could be a solution at least for tv watchers.

Because they are afraid to. Ban the offenders from majors and see how quickly the behavior as a whole starts to change. They just don't want to anger people like Vika and Maria or lose revenue that is generated by them being in tournaments.

They apparently are trying to come.up with a plan to change future generations...but unless they are willing to put a serious behavior modification plan in place no one will take them seriously.

It is misogyny by the western media, I've seen Nadal play the guy is obnoxious he's also uses his grunting as a form of intimidation. Nadal grunts louder on the important points which is a form of cheating. Djokovic also grunts loud so does Murray he sounds like he's sneezing when he grunts. Ferrer, Verdasco, Lopez, Haas, Wawrinka, Gasquet, plenty of men grunt.

The sexism of some of the male posters on this board is pathetic. The men are just as bad as the women but people make excuses due to gender.
