The Canes' men's team went up to Tampa and defeated the South Florida Bulls 5-2 for their 4th straight win. The Canes are now 6-2 for the season. Ranking should go up just a bit.

Tough loss for the Hurricanes today. Very close doubles point and then they lost the first 5 of 6 sets and couldn't climb back. UNF wins 5-2. They are 6-3 for the year.Got to bounce back against Texas Tech and New Mexico next weekend. Go Canes!

The women's team lost a tough one too against the No. 25 Florida State Seminoles. It came down to the 3-3 with the #1 singles to decide it. Laurente had at least one match point but lost the match in a 3-rd set tiebreaker. Tough loss but they are still young and will bounce back. Clemson is up next for the Canes!

#69 Canes go up against #58 Texas Tech in Texas today. Both teams are 6-3 and needing this win. Was a bit worried about Flores after not being able to play singles last weekend but he is in the lineup today.

Miami fell behind 3-1 but the last three matches went to the final set. The scoreboard first had Stancati as a winner so it was 3-2 in favor of Texas Tech. Then Soto won 7-5 and Albanese won 7-6 but then Stancati's win was flipped to a loss for a 4-3 TT win.

Dear College Tennis. Until you figure out how to run a simple scoreboard, fans will stay away, programs will be scrapped and college tennis will continue to be irrelevant. NCAA, ITA, USTA whoever is in charge is a big huge fail right now.

Oh so you thought your guys had pulled out a clutch win? There's no excuse for that.
The problem is these schools hire people to run the scoreboard who have no idea what tennis is. Get someone who is interested to do it. Not that hard.

Well, to tell you the truth I don't trust scoreboards anymore so I hadn't counted it as a win before they flipped it. I wait for awhile for them to fix whatever needs fixing and get the official scores out. College tennis scoreboards are just laughable.

The #15 women's team faced #23 Clemson today at Coral Gables and it was a close one. Miami won the doubles and singles #5 to start things off and grab a 2-0 lead but then Clemson won singles #4, 1, 2 to take a 3-2 lead. But Miami took singles #6 and #3 to grab the 4-3 victory. The Canes gals are now 7-3, 1-1 ACC. Next up is at Georgia Tech on Saturday.

March 5th Team Rankings are out!

The guys move up a couple notches to #67 so they're still in real danger of falling out altogether. Need to win this weekend.

The ladies also move up a couple to #13 this week. They play at #32 Georgia Tech this week.

The #67 Canes (7-4) men have a doubleheader on Saturday. They face Georgetown at 9am and then Florida Gulf Coast at 3 pm at Coral Gables. After these matches, the ACC conference play starts with Clemson on March 15.

The #13 Canes women (5-3, 1-1 ACC) are at #32 Georgia Tech on March 9.

A very good day for the Canes! The men's team hosted a doubleheader today, playing Georgetown in the morning and then Florida Gulf Coast in the afternoon. They easily beat Georgetown 4-0 and then worked through a tougher than expected FGCU 6-1. The Canes are now 9-4 and have surpassed their win total from last year. The ACC season starts on March 15th at home against Clemson. Gonna be a tough one!

The women went up to play Georgia Tech today and it was expected to be a tough match. After a pretty close doubles point, they won fairly easily, taking the dual match 6-1. The ladies are now 8-2, ACC 2-1 for the season. They next travel to Texas on March 22nd and Baylor on the 23rd.

I don't like it. I go to the University of Utah, and we call our school "The U". It's confusing when I hear people calling Miami the U, and personally, I thin thing "The U" fits my school a lot better lol. Why is University of Miami even called the U? I don't get it.

Have you seen the ESPN documentary on the U? It is about Miami football of the 80s. Really tells the story of why they are the U. Best film ESPN has made.

Lol. Yeah, it'sa infuriating when another school adopts the shorthand for your school, but it happens all the time.

I went to Northwestern, whose abbreviation on paper, has always been "NU", not NWU. Nebraska is also abbreviated as NU, which was never a problem until they joined the conference. And, Nebraska's official name is the University of Nebraska (or University of Nebraska-Lincoln), so you'd think they'd go by "UN." It isn't "Nebraska University" like it is "Indiana University".

But, for some reason the sports press has given the "NU" designation to Nebraska. Does it really matter? No. But, people will ask, why can't Northwestern just go by NWU? Well, why can't Nebraska go by UN or UNL? Lol.

Miami came up with that advertising slogan decades ago. And it's not confusing. People think of one school when they hear "The U". I guess it comes with a better marketing plan and better results in the major sports. It is what it is.

I don't know what you're talking about though. Utah has a better history in major sports than Miami, although Miami has a good basket ball team this year. And outside of Florida most people don't call it the U. Even when I lived in Texas people called Utah The U and Miami just, well; Miami.

I mean like Utah is a U, U of U. I don't know where the U in Miami comes from. We have always been the U and we were founded first! So I declare The University of Utah officially to be The U!

Google "The U" and check out what the first hits are. University of Utah is third. U of Miami has a much richer sports history with their hugely popular football team. Majority of people think of Miami when they here the phrase the U

Lovely_Bone, no offense by this meant whatsoever but you aren't from the USA are you.

Miami has a great football history (national titles im talking) and a great one in baseball as well. Also a much better tennis history than Utah.

If you watch an NFL game where the players introduce themselves, players from Utah say "Utah". The players that went to Miami-FL say "The U".

    March 12 Rankings:

The men's team drop three spots to #70. Getting close to falling out altogether. Need some ACC wins. No one in the singles or doubles rankings of course.

The women's team moves up a couple spots to #11. In singles, Kelsey Laurente is at #81, Stephanie Wagner is at #100 and Clementina Riobueno is at #116. In doubles, Lina Lileikite/Stephanie Wagner are at #48.

    Miami Hurricanes Mid-Season Report
The out of conference schedule is mostly completed and the ACC season starts Friday, March 15 at Coral Gables against #25 Clemson. Here’s a review of what’s happened so far with the Canes men’s tennis team and what may happen through the rest of the season.
The Canes finished last season with a 8-13 record overall, a 1-9 record in the ACC and a #67 ranking for the season. However, they did not lose any upperclassmen so there was hope when the season started that the team would improve. So far, the answer is yes and no. They have already passed last year’s win mark with a 9-4 OCC record, but after a high of #54 on February 19th, they have fallen to #70 in the latest rankings (March 12th). This season’s result so far:

    #12 Florida: Loss 5-2
    Bethune-Cookman: Win 7-0
    #71 Louisiana-Lafayette: Win 4-3
    #4 Ohio State: Loss 0-7
    Central Florida: Win 6-1
    #50 Rice: Win 6-1
    #74 Louisiana-Lafayette: Win 4-3
    #55 South Florida: Win 5-2
    #62 North Florida: Loss 2-5
    #58 Texas Tech: Loss 3-4
    New Mexico: Win 5-2
    Georgetown: Win 4-0
    Florida Gulf Coast: Win 6-1

So we go into the ACC season with a 9-4 record. The biggest win so far has been the solid 6-1 win over the #50 Rice Owls. The worst loss on paper was probably the loss to #62 North Florida but the Ospreys have made steady progress for the last few years and have a solid team that has a chance to play in the NCAA tournament this year. Maybe the most disappointing loss was to #58 Texas Tech. After falling behind 0-3 and one match away from losing, the Canes staged a comeback and it came down to a third set tiebreaker to determine the outcome. The Canes couldn’t finish it off and let a good comeback get away. Overall, they have beaten who they are supposed to beat and lost to who they were supposed to lose to. There haven’t been any real upsets either way yet. To get back up in the rankings, the ACC season presents a great opportunity to do that. Here is the upcoming schedule and my own predictions for each matchup:

    (Rankings are from March 12th)
    #25Clemson: Loss (9-5, ACC 0-1)
    #63 Georgia Tech: Win (10-5, ACC 1-1)
    #58 Minnesota: Win (11-5, ACC 1-1)
    #75 Georgia State: Win (12-5. ACC 1-1)
    @ #28 Florida State: Loss (12-6, ACC 1-2)
    @ #24 Wake Forest: Loss (12-7, ACC 1-3)
    @ #44 North Carolina State: Loss (12-8, ACC 1-4)
Boston College: Win (13-8, ACC 2-4)
    @ #57 North Carolina: Loss (13-9, ACC 2-5)
    @ #8 Duke: Loss (13-10, ACC 2-6)
    #1 Virginia: Loss: (13-11, ACC 2-7)
    #59 Virginia Tech: (14-11, ACC 3-7)

The ACC is going to be rough. It is one of the top tennis conferences in the country with Virginia as a clear favorite to take the NCAA title. To get into the NCAA tournament, the team must have a .500 record or better. To achieve this, The matchups between Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech look to be crucial. I predicted a win for both since they will be played at home, but Miami cannot afford to lose any of the ones predicted as a loss if they hope to end the season with a .500 record and get into the NCAA tournament. If they drop any of the predicted wins, then they must get an upset somewhere and with the current team, it will be a hard task. They must protect home court if they hope to play past the ACC tournament this year.

Win or lose, kudos to the Hurricanes today. Even after losing a very close doubles point, they have battled back to 2-2 with Clemson. singles #4, 5 and 6 are all in the third sets. Win 2 of 3 and we got this!

Looks like the Canes go down to Clemson 3-4. Stancati lost to Rigsby in a 3rd set tiebreaker. Tough loss but if they fight like they did today, they'll make it to the ncaa tournament!

The win would have really helped the ranking. Very good match from the Canes. Flores and Gonzalez played lights out. 5 and 6 did better than I expected for Miami. Doubles was also tight.

Another heart-breaker loss for the Canes but one that offers hope!

The Canes faced the #25 Clemson Tigers today and it was a battle from start to finish. The doubles point went down to a tiebreaker and the Canes dropped the point after having the lead for awhile. The singles was a great battle with the points going back and forth. Miami led 3-2 and Stancati had the lead at #4 singles, but finally dropped the match in a 3rd set tiebreaker. Tough loss for Stancati as the same thing happened a couple weeks ago at Texas Tech. But seeing the team fight this well against the #25 team is good news for the remainder of the season. If the Canes can keep this up, they should be able to win enough matches and get to a .500 record, a top 50 ranking and a spot in the ncaa tournament. The next dual match is Sunday, March 17 against Georgia Tech at home.

Miami grabbed a must win today, bouncing back for the heartbreaker loss to Clemson by getting their first ACC win of the season against Georgia Tech. Miami dropped the doubles, grabbed a 3-1 lead, Georgia Tech tied it up 3-3 and Miami finally put it away when Flores won the #1 singles match in the third set. The Canes are now 10-5 for the season. They face another must win game against #58 Minnesota on Tuesday, March 19th at home.

The Hurricanes host the #58 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Tuesday at noon. In my list of predictions, this is one of the must wins for the Canes. The Gophers are only 4-7 this year but they have beaten #35 Louisville and #30 Washington this year. But they are 0-5 on the road. The Canes lead the all-time series 6-2 but the Gophers won the last match up last year at Coral Gables. After a close defeat to Clemson and a win over Georgia Tech, the Canes need to keep improving and take this one before the rough ACC season really gets going.

#65 Canes hosting #61 Minnesota today. They just dropped the doubles point and the singles are getting ready to start. This is one of our must wins to finish with a .500 or better record this year. Got to bounce back!

Hope the Hurricanes can pull this one out. No clear advantage for either team in any spot except for maybe Minnesota having an advantage at 1.

The Canes pull out another nail-biter to take a must win! A few days ago I made predictions for the rest of the season before the ACC season started. With a solid 9-4 start, the Canes have a chance to get to the NCAA tournament this year. But the margin of error is very slim. After dropping a oh-so-close 4-3 decision to #25 Clemson on Friday, the Canes bounced back and took a close 4-3 decision over ACC rival Georgia Tech. The must-take matches continued today against #58 Minnesota. After dropping the doubles, Miami fell behind 3-1 and it looked tight again. But after Gonzalez finished off his opponent, Soto won 6-3 in the 3rd after being up 5-0 and causing some anxious moments. It was all tied up at 3-3 and the No. 4 singles between Aly and Jack Hamburg of Minny would decide the match. It went all the way to a tiebreaker in the third set. Miami has taken their lumps this year with a couple of 3rd set tiebreaker losses to decide the matches but this time Aly came through with a victory to give the Canes another must win.
The Canes are now 11-5 with Georgia State coming up on Friday. It is another must win before the brutal ACC season continues.

Cane hero of the week; Omar Aly! With the matches tied at 3-all, Omar battled Minnesota's Jack Hamburg in the third set and fought off a match point before finally winning 7-6 in the third to give the Canes their 11th win of the season. Congrats to Aly!

The #65 Canes (11-5, 1-1) host unranked Georgia State tomorrow at 11am. This is our last OOC match before the brutal ACC season continues so we need to take this!

The #10 Canes ladies (8-3, 2-1) will be at Texas to take on the Longhorns at 3pm.
