They should be able to figure it out. There are successful private schools. Miami isn't the only one with this problem.

Virginia is now 77-0 in the ACC hasn't lost in 7 years . That's pretty dam impressive . I'm not saying Miami won't be successful they have been successful with their exact set up before . What I'm saying is can they be among the Elite top 10 or better anytime soon . Their is no doubt that the state schools have an advantage . Just look at the tennis facilities in Georgia and Virginia those schools have a major commitment to their tennis programs . There are a few Blue Chip 5 star players in Miami that will graduate next year, it would be great if UM can keep them here .

Yes, and if you count matchups against ACC teams in the ACC tournament, National Team Indoors, and NCAA tournament, we are on a 103-0 streak against ACC opponents, which is the longest such tennis streak in NCAA history. Ohio State had a 92-0 streak snapped in an upset by Illinois last year in the Big 10 finals, with UVa right behind them at 91-0 at the time.

Back to Miami: USC is the model for private schools. Got to get some rich recruits to pay almost the whole bill and fight for the 5-8 positions on the roster. Then you get top foreign recruits (or an occasional top domestic recruit) with a bigger scholarship offer.

Then, if someone is not performing up to their scholarship dollars, you run them off. Seriously, that is how it is done at a school with expensive tuition, because you need to try again with those dollars.

I guess it remains to be seen if Miami is willing to do that. They're a bad cycle now and it's going to take something to get out of it.

The Canes men will face UNC in the first round of the ACC tournament. The Tarheels won the regular season match 5-2. The Canes are reeling right now with 4 straight losses and will not be playing past this tournament without a big upset.

The ACC starts Thursday, April 25, with #9 Miami vs. #8 UNC getting the tournament started at 9am in Cary, North Carolina.

The Canes have zero momentum going into the tournament, losing the last four dual matches and 25 of their last 28 matches. Eve if they do surprise everyone and beat the Heels, they will face #1 seed UVA in the quarters.

One of the students made them this year. I got permission for her to use them so I put them together. I thought she did a really good job with them.

They just lost all and any momentum the last month of the season. Went from 13-8 and some great chances to get in the Top 40 and a NCAA tourney spot to 13-13 and an ACC 1st round exit to end the season. Disappointing but it is what it is. Women start tomorrow.

Flores basically gave up. He was taking no time on change-overs and didn't look like he was trying to fight back at all. Mauz also let it go in the 2nd set. Soto tried to get back into it but he was over matched.

Gonzalez,Albanese and Tsukamoto were playing well. Tsukamoto has a lot of potential. Small guy but he makes great contact on the forehand.

Sad to hear that. Maybe the team became disheartened when their season went south towards the end.

Or maybe they were sick of playing in North Carolina again. lol

Very sad to hear that , the one good thing I took from this year when I watched UM play in person was that they fought till the end . Feel bad for Mario and his coaching staff , onto next year nothing else they can do now .

Wilfredo Gonzalez has a lot of fight. "Pollo" is one of the biggest fighters in the ACC. I agree that the rest of the team usually does fight. I'm not sure what was up with Flores today because last time he played Clark he beat him 0-6 6-3 6-2.

Pollo is a lot of fun to watch very animated . Flores is a fighter as well , I've seen him go at it with opponents , a fierce competitor . Probably just had an off day or wasn't into it . As we all know with tennis very Mental

Disappointed in the way the season ended. It's not the 5-match losing streak. It's straight sets, 6-0 sets and sudden disappearance of competitiveness that is disheartening. I was not at the games so it's hard to say what the cause is. They only talk about ponies and rainbows on the official site.

Seeing how the last two seasons have gone, the way this season finished, the way the team absolutely collapsed against beatable teams, and how there is next to nothing in the way of recruiting, you have to start wondering if Coach Rincon's seat is getting warm. He had a great start to his coaching career with a few Sweet sixteens and All-Americans but that has all dried up.

The women's soccer team didn't have that disastrous of a season this year but new AD James fired the coach. Could some changes be coming for the tennis team? I didn't think there was much of a chance of that at all, but now with the news about the soccer coach, you have to start wondering. Coach Rincon may be feeling the heat.

The Miami women are all business and they are talented. I've seen them practice. They don't do all the nonsense that some of the women's teams do especially NC State women. They prepared for UNC by playing end of the racket baseball, bringing their own sound system and dancing and painting wolves on their cheeks.

Lady Canes win 5-1! They move on to the semifinals against #1 UNC. The last meeting was very hard fought. There's no reason to think the Canes can't win this. Just as long as they don't choke on the doubles point again.

The Lady Canes knocked off ACC top see and national #2 UNC Tarheels 4-3 in the ACC semifinals! Boy was it close but they defeinitely learned their lesson from the close loss earlier this month.

College tennis needs their own version of the NIT tournament. Kinda bummed the Canes guys season is finished. Guess I'll just root for the ACC teams.

Ugh, did I just sound like a SEC fan right there? I'll try to avoid that next time.

I'd be shocked if they won the title, don't think they are ready yet. But who knows? They did just best the #2 team in the country.

Stephanie Wagner was the only Cane chosen for the NCAA singles and doubles tournaments, men or women. And she is the No. 1 alternate.

    Review of 2012-13 Men's Team
After a 2012 season that ended with a 8-13, 1-9 record and a ranking of #67, there was some hope for improvement for the 2013 season. No seniors had left, and the team was expected to come back with more experience. Personally, I had hopes of a record above .500 and a Top 40 season. These goals are criteria for a team to be selected for the NCAA tournament. The Canes had missed two of the last three tournaments and there was some hope that they would get back.
The season did not start off well when senior Mark Schanerman was arrested on Nov. 30 for drug offenses. He was dropped from the team without any sort of announcement or information.
The dual season started on Jan. 19 with a double-header against Florida and Bethune-Cookman. Until the last couple weeks of the regular season, there were not many surprises. The Canes beat who they were capable of, but were not able to pull off many upsets. Their best wins were probably against the Big Ten's Minnesota Golden Gophers, who were ranked #61 and Conference USA's Rice who were ranked #50. Their worst loss was perhaps to Atlantic Sun's North Florida who were ranked #62 and beat the Canes at Coral Gables.
On April 6, the Canes stood at 13-8, 2-4 and were ranked #52. This was already five wins better than the previous season and with the last four ACC dual matches coming up, the Canes were in control of their own destiny. Beating top ten teams Virginia and Duke would be tough, but they seemingly had a good chance to take down #69 North Carolina and #52 Virginia Tech. Beat these teams and win one round in the ACC tournament, and the Canes had a pretty good chance to extend their postseason.
The wheels completely came off the last two weeks of the season. First, the Canes went up to UNC and fought hard but were beaten 5-2. Two days later they were handed a complete 7-0 beatdown by #9 Duke. The worst loss came against Virginia Tech at home with another 7-0 drubbing. The last dual match of the regular season was another 7-0 loss to #1 Virginia.
The Canes were seeded #9 in the ACC tournament and had to beat #8 seed UNC and #1 seed Virginia to have hope for a NCAA berth. They never even got close with yet another disheartening 4-0 loss to UNC to end their season. According to some fans who were at the tournament, many of the Canes did not look good in any way, mentally or otherwise. In their last five dual matches for the season, the Canes went 4 wins and 29 losses. The Canes finished the season 13-13, 2-8 and probably a final ranking around #60.
With such a poor performance during the last month of the season, it is difficult to expect or hope for the 2014 season to be much better than the last. The Canes lose senior Victor Mauz, but his record was only a 6-11 at the 4~6 singles slot so it is not a huge loss.
Junior Diego Soto was the most valuable player for the Canes this season, going 12-13 in the incredibly tough No. 1 singles slot. He even won the ACC Player of the Week Award once during the season and should be even better next year.
Junior Gabriel Flores went 13-12 mostly in the No. 2 spot. Some of the fans at the ACC tournament noticed that he seemed very disheartened during and after his match. Here's hoping that he can get some well-deserved rest and bounce back next season.
Sophomore Wilfredo Gonzalez put up a 16-8 record in the No. 3 singles slot. From the matches and reports I was able to see, as well as some of his results, I would want to give him the Fighting Spirit Prize. He never seems to give up or back down until the match is over.
Junior Omar Aly finished with a 7-6 record mostly as the No. 4 player. Aly's doubles team with Gonzalez was the Canes best team, and they were the only Canes to be ranked nationally this year when they received a ranking of #66 on March 26.
Junior Marco Stancati lost some tough matches this year but still managed to finish with a 8-9 record as No. 5.
Freshman William Albanese did great for the team this year, going 13-9 but that was mostly in the No. 6 singles slot.
Sophomore Henrique Tsukamoto played the occasional No. 5 or 6 spot, but his biggest contributions this year was in the doubles with Stancati.
Freshman Jack Murphy was not used much until the end of the season. His record in the fall season was not good at all to say the least so he will need to improve quite a bit over the summer if he is hoping to be in the singles lineup next year.
Recruiting does not help the situation as it is right now. The only recruit lined up is 4-star and #128 Ber**** Tefel. The Tennis Recruiting Network does not show any prospects with more than 3-stars. Coach Mario Rincon will need to go international to find some players to play for the Canes. With only 4 and a half scholarships available and Miami's high tuition, it makes it very tough for a team like the Hurricanes to pick and choose the players it wants. Coach Rincon is going to have to figure out something soon and pull something out of his magic hat before the four juniors graduate after next season.
So what can we expect for next season? The team will have another season under its belt so we may be able hope for a 15-win season and a 40ish ranking, but other than that, I'm going to have to chug down some green-orange koolaid before I make any more NCAA berth predictions Here's hoping that Coach and staff can find a couple of ready-to-go international players, especially before next season ends. If not, the bottom could completely drop out and we may be looking at some major changes in Miami hurricanes men's tennis.
