Just saw UM Womens Tennis lost to Virginia they were down 1-4 . They won the doubles point
It was a good day of tennis at UM today . Gabriel Flores had a chance to try and upset the #1 player in the nation Jarmere Jenkins if he could of gotten the match to a 3rd set . Jenkins was starting to struggle physically
but like the great player he is he won the 2nd set in a tiebreak 8-6 . Jenkins was down 5-1 or 5-2 in that set I can't remember and made a great comeback . Diego Soto took Alex Domijan to a tiebreak 1st set by playing the best tennis I've seen him play . He lost the 2nd set 6-0 and you can tell he was done after the effort in the 1st set . Wifredo (Pollo)
saved the sweep by winning his match at the 3 position .
It was a tough season overall for the Canes . The worst part I see is how are the Canes gonna be able to compete with these elite teams . Very tough at UM to get a Academic Scholarship and with the small amount of scholarships given to mens tennis and a tuition now at 56 k , I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel . From what I heard today most players at UM are paying or their parents are paying the tuition . What can the U offer Tennis Players 10% 20% 30% in the form of a scholarship ? That still leaves a ton of money to be paid just for tuition .
They should be able to figure it out. There are successful private schools. Miami isn't the only one with this problem.
Virginia is now 77-0 in the ACC hasn't lost in 7 years . That's pretty dam impressive . I'm not saying Miami won't be successful they have been successful with their exact set up before . What I'm saying is can they be among the Elite top 10 or better anytime soon . Their is no doubt that the state schools have an advantage . Just look at the tennis facilities in Georgia and Virginia those schools have a major commitment to their tennis programs . There are a few Blue Chip 5 star players in Miami that will graduate next year, it would be great if UM can keep them here .
Yes, and if you count matchups against ACC teams in the ACC tournament, National Team Indoors, and NCAA tournament, we are on a 103-0 streak against ACC opponents, which is the longest such tennis streak in NCAA history. Ohio State had a 92-0 streak snapped in an upset by Illinois last year in the Big 10 finals, with UVa right behind them at 91-0 at the time.
Back to Miami: USC is the model for private schools. Got to get some rich recruits to pay almost the whole bill and fight for the 5-8 positions on the roster. Then you get top foreign recruits (or an occasional top domestic recruit) with a bigger scholarship offer.
Then, if someone is not performing up to their scholarship dollars, you run them off. Seriously, that is how it is done at a school with expensive tuition, because you need to try again with those dollars.
I guess it remains to be seen if Miami is willing to do that. They're a bad cycle now and it's going to take something to get out of it.
The Canes men will face UNC in the first round of the ACC tournament. The Tarheels won the regular season match 5-2. The Canes are reeling right now with 4 straight losses and will not be playing past this tournament without a big upset.
ACC Tournament Draw
The ACC starts Thursday, April 25, with #9 Miami vs. #8 UNC getting the tournament started at 9am in Cary, North Carolina.
The Canes have zero momentum going into the tournament, losing the last four dual matches and 25 of their last 28 matches. Eve if they do surprise everyone and beat the Heels, they will face #1 seed UVA in the quarters.

Last Hurrah for the 2013 Season
Good luck to the Miami Hurricanes Men's Tennis Team as they finish off their season in the ACC Tennis Championships! Already looking forward to next year!
Cool graphics! How did you do those?
One of the students made them this year. I got permission for her to use them so I put them together. I thought she did a really good job with them.
How did UM do today ?
Vs. UNC is tomorrow, Thursday at 9 am!
Yea my bad , I've been thinking all day that its Thursday
I may be able to catch some of Miami vs UNC tomorrow. If I do I will take a video or two.
Great! Not sure if I'm going to want to watch it but anything I can get is good. Have fun at the tourney!
Let's go Canes! Beat the Tarheels!
Not looking good for the U. Flores and Soto both lost 0-6 sets
They just lost all and any momentum the last month of the season. Went from 13-8 and some great chances to get in the Top 40 and a NCAA tourney spot to 13-13 and an ACC 1st round exit to end the season. Disappointing but it is what it is. Women start tomorrow.
Flores basically gave up. He was taking no time on change-overs and didn't look like he was trying to fight back at all. Mauz also let it go in the 2nd set. Soto tried to get back into it but he was over matched.
Gonzalez,Albanese and Tsukamoto were playing well. Tsukamoto has a lot of potential. Small guy but he makes great contact on the forehand.
Sad to hear that. Maybe the team became disheartened when their season went south towards the end.
Or maybe they were sick of playing in North Carolina again. lol
Very sad to hear that , the one good thing I took from this year when I watched UM play in person was that they fought till the end . Feel bad for Mario and his coaching staff , onto next year nothing else they can do now .
Wilfredo Gonzalez has a lot of fight. "Pollo" is one of the biggest fighters in the ACC. I agree that the rest of the team usually does fight. I'm not sure what was up with Flores today because last time he played Clark he beat him 0-6 6-3 6-2.
Pollo is a lot of fun to watch very animated . Flores is a fighter as well , I've seen him go at it with opponents , a fierce competitor . Probably just had an off day or wasn't into it . As we all know with tennis very Mental
Disappointed in the way the season ended. It's not the 5-match losing streak. It's straight sets, 6-0 sets and sudden disappearance of competitiveness that is disheartening. I was not at the games so it's hard to say what the cause is. They only talk about ponies and rainbows on the official site.
Canes ladies are the 4th seed in the ACC tournament and will face 5th seed Georgia Tech tomorrow Friday at 12 pm.

Seeing how the last two seasons have gone, the way this season finished, the way the team absolutely collapsed against beatable teams, and how there is next to nothing in the way of recruiting, you have to start wondering if Coach Rincon's seat is getting warm. He had a great start to his coaching career with a few Sweet sixteens and All-Americans but that has all dried up.
The women's soccer team didn't have that disastrous of a season this year but new AD James fired the coach. Could some changes be coming for the tennis team? I didn't think there was much of a chance of that at all, but now with the news about the soccer coach, you have to start wondering. Coach Rincon may be feeling the heat.
Lady Canes looking good against GT. Took the doubles and 5 of 6 first sets in singles.
The Miami women are all business and they are talented. I've seen them practice. They don't do all the nonsense that some of the women's teams do especially NC State women. They prepared for UNC by playing end of the racket baseball, bringing their own sound system and dancing and painting wolves on their cheeks.
Coach YT is a good coach and pretty tough. A better motivator too than the NC State coach it seems.
Lady Canes win 5-1! They move on to the semifinals against #1 UNC. The last meeting was very hard fought. There's no reason to think the Canes can't win this. Just as long as they don't choke on the doubles point again.
The Lady Canes knocked off ACC top see and national #2 UNC Tarheels 4-3 in the ACC semifinals! Boy was it close but they defeinitely learned their lesson from the close loss earlier this month.

College tennis needs their own version of the NIT tournament. Kinda bummed the Canes guys season is finished. Guess I'll just root for the ACC teams.
Ugh, did I just sound like a SEC fan right there? I'll try to avoid that next time.
Keep an eye out for the Canes as they try to make their first Final Four since 2006!
Canes-NCAA Tournament Central
Lady Canes looking very dangerous.
Video of Miami's ACC Championship
I'd be shocked if they won the title, don't think they are ready yet. But who knows? They did just best the #2 team in the country.
Lady Canes face North Florida and then the winner of Purdue-South Carolina for a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in Illinois.
