    Review of 2012-13 Men's Team
After a 2012 season that ended with a 8-13, 1-9 record and a ranking of #67, there was some hope for improvement for the 2013 season. No seniors had left, and the team was expected to come back with more experience. Personally, I had hopes of a record above .500 and a Top 40 season. These goals are criteria for a team to be selected for the NCAA tournament. The Canes had missed two of the last three tournaments and there was some hope that they would get back.
The season did not start off well when senior Mark Schanerman was arrested on Nov. 30 for drug offenses. He was dropped from the team without any sort of announcement or information.
The dual season started on Jan. 19 with a double-header against Florida and Bethune-Cookman. Until the last couple weeks of the regular season, there were not many surprises. The Canes beat who they were capable of, but were not able to pull off many upsets. Their best wins were probably against the Big Ten's Minnesota Golden Gophers, who were ranked #61 and Conference USA's Rice who were ranked #50. Their worst loss was perhaps to Atlantic Sun's North Florida who were ranked #62 and beat the Canes at Coral Gables.
On April 6, the Canes stood at 13-8, 2-4 and were ranked #52. This was already five wins better than the previous season and with the last four ACC dual matches coming up, the Canes were in control of their own destiny. Beating top ten teams Virginia and Duke would be tough, but they seemingly had a good chance to take down #69 North Carolina and #52 Virginia Tech. Beat these teams and win one round in the ACC tournament, and the Canes had a pretty good chance to extend their postseason.
The wheels completely came off the last two weeks of the season. First, the Canes went up to UNC and fought hard but were beaten 5-2. Two days later they were handed a complete 7-0 beatdown by #9 Duke. The worst loss came against Virginia Tech at home with another 7-0 drubbing. The last dual match of the regular season was another 7-0 loss to #1 Virginia.
The Canes were seeded #9 in the ACC tournament and had to beat #8 seed UNC and #1 seed Virginia to have hope for a NCAA berth. They never even got close with yet another disheartening 4-0 loss to UNC to end their season. According to some fans who were at the tournament, many of the Canes did not look good in any way, mentally or otherwise. In their last five dual matches for the season, the Canes went 4 wins and 29 losses. The Canes finished the season 13-13, 2-8 and probably a final ranking around #60.
With such a poor performance during the last month of the season, it is difficult to expect or hope for the 2014 season to be much better than the last. The Canes lose senior Victor Mauz, but his record was only a 6-11 at the 4~6 singles slot so it is not a huge loss.
Junior Diego Soto was the most valuable player for the Canes this season, going 12-13 in the incredibly tough No. 1 singles slot. He even won the ACC Player of the Week Award once during the season and should be even better next year.
Junior Gabriel Flores went 13-12 mostly in the No. 2 spot. Some of the fans at the ACC tournament noticed that he seemed very disheartened during and after his match. Here's hoping that he can get some well-deserved rest and bounce back next season.
Sophomore Wilfredo Gonzalez put up a 16-8 record in the No. 3 singles slot. From the matches and reports I was able to see, as well as some of his results, I would want to give him the Fighting Spirit Prize. He never seems to give up or back down until the match is over.
Junior Omar Aly finished with a 7-6 record mostly as the No. 4 player. Aly's doubles team with Gonzalez was the Canes best team, and they were the only Canes to be ranked nationally this year when they received a ranking of #66 on March 26.
Junior Marco Stancati lost some tough matches this year but still managed to finish with a 8-9 record as No. 5.
Freshman William Albanese did great for the team this year, going 13-9 but that was mostly in the No. 6 singles slot.
Sophomore Henrique Tsukamoto played the occasional No. 5 or 6 spot, but his biggest contributions this year was in the doubles with Stancati.
Freshman Jack Murphy was not used much until the end of the season. His record in the fall season was not good at all to say the least so he will need to improve quite a bit over the summer if he is hoping to be in the singles lineup next year.
Recruiting does not help the situation as it is right now. The only recruit lined up is 4-star and #128 Ber**** Tefel. The Tennis Recruiting Network does not show any prospects with more than 3-stars. Coach Mario Rincon will need to go international to find some players to play for the Canes. With only 4 and a half scholarships available and Miami's high tuition, it makes it very tough for a team like the Hurricanes to pick and choose the players it wants. Coach Rincon is going to have to figure out something soon and pull something out of his magic hat before the four juniors graduate after next season.
So what can we expect for next season? The team will have another season under its belt so we may be able hope for a 15-win season and a 40ish ranking, but other than that, I'm going to have to chug down some green-orange koolaid before I make any more NCAA berth predictions Here's hoping that Coach and staff can find a couple of ready-to-go international players, especially before next season ends. If not, the bottom could completely drop out and we may be looking at some major changes in Miami hurricanes men's tennis.

Fantastic! Now for the next four years, unless I take the time to fuddle up his name, I'm going to be cussing. Two birds with one stone maybe?

Only two games away from winning but the rain stopped play so the Canes and Ospreys pick it tomorrow morning at 10:30. The Canes lead 3-0 and lead in all the remaining matches so they should be able to finish it off quickly and get read for Purdue. The 2nd round starts at 1 pm.

This Northwestern matchup worries me. Canes are peaking right now but it looks like the Wildcats are too. And they beat us in February so it could be tough.

I'm an NU alum and fan and I'd say the same thing. The Canes worry me.

Both teams are playing well at the right time. NU didn't have a great season compared to basically the past 12-15 years (though all of their losses were to Top 20 teams, mostly Top 15 teams). But, they really got it together at the end of the season and beat both Michigan and Nebraska (who they had lost to during the regular season) to win the Big 10 tournament. Those teams also advanced to the Sweet 16.

Don't know what to take from the Team Indoors win by NU. First, it was close, so I don't think NU is actually that much better. This is the sort of match that could produce different results every time it's played with the teams exchanging wins. Second, the lineup for NU should be fairly different than earlier in the season, and I don't know how that will play out. I guess the good thing for NU is simply the confidence from knowing that they can beat Miami.

Not sure if the conditions will favor any team. It's a short trip for NU and they're familiar with the facility, but I don't think that's much of an advantage.

NU rarely surprises in the post-season. They've only missed the Rnd 16 once in the past 15+ years, but they usually do exactly as expected or slightly underachieve. For example, not long ago NU had two seasons where they won the Indoors, achived No. 1 ranking, were consistently ranked in the Top 5, garnered Top 4 seeds for the NCAAs, but don't have at least a SF to show for it. They lost to very good teams each of those years, but still, they had legit opportunities and did not capitalize. Most other years they simply live up to their seeding.

A quarterfinal appearance would be a great achievement this year, even by way of beating a team they have already beat. It would be a slight overchievement, which would be nice to see.

Miami's Lileikite had a match point at 5-4 but lost 7-5. Made it 3-3. But Bolivar won 6-4 in the 3rd set at No. 6 to get Miami to the Elite Eight for the fifth consecutive year!

Great match, congrats to Miami!! As an NU fan/alum, that was tough. But, great fight by the Wildcats after getting crushed in doubles and 1 and 2 singles and down 3-0, and saving a match point that would have resulted in a 4-2 loss.

Ugh, disappointed. WTF happened in doubles? I can understand a doubles point loss, but two 1-8 losses?? Miami must have played great.

So, again, GREAT JOB, Miami!! I'll root for the Canes now. The better they do, the better a 4-3 loss to the Canes to end the season looks. And, seriously, the women's field is pretty open this year. Miami really could win it all. How did you do vs. UNC during he regular season (and ACC tournament if applicable)?

    [And, GREAT JOB, NU!!]

That was a great match, bluetrain. Too bad somebody had to lose. Even after that easy doubles win, which surprised me too, and the top two singles wins, I was still nervous with the way the Wildcats came out fighting. Boy was it close. It's a tough tournament and everybody except Florida seem to be battling it out. What an easy draw for the Gators so far. I'm bot sure if the Canes have it in them to beat Texas A&M, UNC (probably) and Florida (probably) to win it all but whoever wins this thing will certainly deserve it. Miami lost to UNC in the regular season but beat them in the semis of the ACC tournament on their way to the title. First things first though. Beat the Aggies!

It's not like the Canes are a major player in men's tennis anymore, so it really doesn't matter, but today was a very disappointing day. The Canes had the 37th pick in the ITA Kick-Off draft held today. Of the 45 teams that had a pick, the Canes were the only team to pass on going anywhere. After asking one of the athletic directors why, I got a a tweet saying that Coach Rincon felt the schedule would be better served with a couple of duals than going to the ITA Kick-Off.

Thought a few days would help me see the matter a bit more clearly but no. Still wondering why Miami continues to let the men's team recede further and further into insignificance. Of course there's nothing on the official website other than boasting about a top 55 finish in the rankings.

One real good sign of where the school has their priorities are the twitter accounts. The Canes have three Twitter accounts; @HurricaneTennis, @CanesMensTennis and @CanesWTennis. Women's tennis has taken over the @HurricaneTennis account and abandoned the @CanesWTennis account years ago. The men use the @CanesMensTennis account. Does it mean anything? Probably not. But still...

Hate being harsh or critical about my team, but I'm not gonna be Pollyanna either and boast about a Top-55 finish. Things have to get better eventually.

    I hope.

I am rooting for the other ACC schools to get stronger and provide better competition for UVa. Best wishes. I know it must be tough to read "top 55" and statements such "as high as number 50 this season." I remember when Miami beat UVa in Charlottesville, which was the last time we lost on our home courts.

No doubt Virginia is the cream of the ACC. Having said that what an arrogant statement. They had a battle with Duke during the season and another close match with Wake Forest in the ACC final. I know they have a great recruiting class but you can't replace Jenkins. I think Duke, Wake, and UNC will all give them tough matches this year.
