Phelps has 8 medals and everybody and there Grandmother are talking about it. I guess it is good for swimming as nobody gives a poop but every 4 years. So if Rafa won 6 matches shouldn't he get 6 Gold medals just like Phelps who gets a medal for 45-90 seconds he works. Don't get me wrong Phelps is a great athlete but to call him the best overall is a joke. Rafa drinks his milkshake.

    1. This belongs in Odd and Ends.
    2. Phelps did not get a medal for the preliminary rounds, just the finals.
    3. They are different sports. Get over it.

Guys, Tiger Woods is so overrated.

I bet Nadal would rock golf because it wouldn't be hard on his knees!

You're the dumbest guy in this forum. Don't you know that before you get to the finals or the medal match in swimming you have to qualify or participate in heats? Don't you know that even if you win a heat but your time is not fast, you still can't compete in the medal round? Don't you know that before you can even reach the Olympics you have to qualify in a zonal games? Don't you know how hard these swimmers train and compete just to be a part of the Olympics? In tennis, your rankings give you the passport to compete. If you're the number one in your country, you can immediately compete unless you refuse. But, in swimming, even though you're the best in the world, if you failed to qualify because you have a slower time, you WON'T be able to compete in the Olympics. Now, don't talk that winning an 8 gold medal in Olympics is just nothing. Phelps may not be the greatest of all time for you, but certainly he's the best in this generation. Oh, by the way, Phelps is not a joke, he's a swimming freak... a fast, a classy, a powerful, a better athlete than those over paid basketball stars, and a humble Olympian.

I guess you don't know these things, and that makes you an idiot for posting this comment!

Nadal's clay court game is so overrated as well. And while we're at it, I think Michael Jordan really wasn't that good. :)

this thread should be moved to the trash... seriously?

8 medals/8 world records in ONE games? it's impossible to be overrated. you are a god if you do this, even more so when compared with his last games. seriously, I know TT is famous for needless bashing of players, but now we're bringing other sports into it? Jeez...

plus, I'm a HUGE Nadal fan but he has 1 gold medal compared to Phelp's eight, and if you include his Slams he's still down 6 - 8. And that's just in BEIJING. Include Athens and Rafa has a long, long way to go.

if you want a somewhat scientific example of how hard he's working: the dude allegedly burns 12,000 calories a day at the olympics due to activity. the human average is 2,000. what he's doing is ridiculous, he just makes it looks so easy. good luck ever coming close to appreciating how hard he's worked his body.

the previous record for career golds medals was 9. he has 14 and is probably going to london in 2012. he won all 8 of his races and set world records in 7 of them. and this doesnt include athens where he got 6 golds. i dare you to find an athlete with a more impressive resume.

i have wondered about the OP's original point...... certain sports it's hard to win alot of gold medals. i mean, in tennis, it would be two max.

but i don't understand why all these threads recently are started by rafa fans. very self-conscious about rafa not getting enough recognition.

    Got that right.

Yeah, it had to be a nadal fan, they always take it too far

    He probably is!

These boards should have some sort of stupid-thread-censor thing to avoid BullShi+ threads like these from ever being created

Usain Bolt should be the greatest

here's the deal ,if Usain Bolt should win the 200m ok then he will have 2 gold . .. now if the Olympic committee starts a 50m , and 150m and then relay like they do in swimming Usain Bolt should win a ton of medals like Phelps..

Phelps and Nadal are both superstars of their respective sports. One trait both share is their sheer determination and almost defiant refusal to lose. So many athletes in any sport could learn from both of them. On TSN during the mens final yesterday they mentioned Phelps met Nadal in the village and thought he was a cool guy. It was great to hear.

Swimmers only get a chance in 4 years to be in the limelight... so Phelps definitely deserves what he's getting now.

in swimming you get to get more medals because one can join in many events. you're not given the same opportunities in tennis.

    ehm.. questions please?:

i wonder of he wipes himself before swiming for 20 seconds?

does he stand there 30 more secondes after the judge calls the start?

how good would he perform in the low bouncing water of the 90's?

his stoke? does it have less spin than Nadal?

should he do butterfly 1h or 2h?

should he change his hand to midplus?

Mmmm. For a start my Grandmother hasn't mentioned Phelps to me at all.
It's true that Phelps may only be considered the best overall because of the amount of events and strokes that swimming has available for him to enter,
but keep in mind that Rafa didn't even win the doubles.
Steve Redgrave is more impressive to me because he won a gold medal at 5 different Olympics.

Phelps is without a doubt the world's best swimmer. I think its difficult to say he's the world's best athlete though. You could compare Phelps' performance at the Olympics to say Nadal's performance at the French Open the last few years. In both cases, there was nobody in the world who came close to out performing them. Or would it be more fair to say that Phelp's 17 or so total swims and 8 gold medals this Olympics is comparable to winning the calendar GS? To me it seems like his domination during this competition would be easier to achieve than performing so well in tennis in four different major tournaments. This is not taking away from his abilities as a swimmer, but just how he would rank as a top overall athlete in the world.

Actually Bolt would probably lose if they had a 50M. He still does not start well at all. But once he gets outta gates and gets into gallop mode he just motors away from the pack.

Phelps would also lose just about any 50M race, even though the only race that they do is 50M free

Thank you finally somebody sees things from my point of view as they should. I didn't realize there were so swimming fans in the forum. I couldn't tell if the swimming, speedwalking or the event where they make the horses walk real funny is more exciting. Maybe I just need somebody to explain to me why swimmers get a medal for every little cotton picking event. Nadal won 6 matches so therefore he should 6 medals, the same logic that is being used to hype Phelps could be used to hype Nadal and tennis. That's all I am saying.
