How would you see this matchup going. In a series of 5 matches on the 5 major surfaces I guess I would see:

Slow hard courts/rebound ace- Seles wins 3 of 5
Clay- Seles wins 4 of 5
Grass- Serena wins 5 of 5
    U.S Open/fast hard courts- Serena wins 4 of 5
    Carpet/indoors- Serena wins 3 of 5

Serena btw is 4-1 vs Seles, with all 5 matches being when both players were clearly outside their primes (97-2001). Their first match though was when Seles was world #3 and Serena only 15 and making her main draw WTA debut. Serena lost the first set 7-5, but won the last 2 sets 6-1, 6-1. It was on a fast carpet style court.

A good but very exceptional barometer is Hingis
Martina beat Mónica much more badly than she beat either Venus or Serena.
But since Martina game was so unique,I am afraid that it is not the ideal measuring unit

The only player out of Hingis reach was Graf, even discounting the match that never happened,99 RG
But she so much enjoyed beating the Sisters in two pack offers!!!
And in regards to Seles, suffices to say that the Nadal vs Federer rivalry was a very tight one compared to that

It is an interesting perspective, but the games of Serena, Seles, and Hingis are all so different it is hard to compare.

Serena is a power player like Seles, with great angles like Seles. However has a dominant serve unlike Seles, a very ample net game unlike Seles, and is an outstanding mover, athlete, and defender, unlike Seles. On the other hand Seles was known for her impeccable placement, precision, and consistency unlike unforced error barrage (when forced to play more balls than she likes) Serena.

Seles is a player who relies on impeccable timing, amazing accuracy, use of angles, and hitting the ball very early to take time away from opponents like Hingis. However Seles has a very strong serve (nothing Serena-like but far above Hingis) unlike Hingis, is known for her power off the ground and return of serve unlike Hingis. However Hingis has far more variety, guile, and feel in her game than Seles, and is far more of an all courter, with much better volleys, and transition game than Seles. She also moves better (although not that much more than peak Seles who was pretty fast, and like Hingis an excellent defender, and Hingis isn't as speedy on foot as any of Henin, Clijsters, Graf, Sanchez, Dementieva, Venus, Serena, etc...) and defends much better than Seles.

Hingis and Serena are the furthest alike and have very little similar about them at all other than both having excellent return of serves and very strong angles. Seles is kind of a cross between the two. I don't think there is much correlation between the Serena-Hingis, Serena-Seles, and Hingis-Seles matchups. Hingis also never had to face prime Serena of mid 2002-today, and likewise never faced prime Seles. Both Serena and Seles faced prime Hingis, while not at their best.

An interesting comment given that Hingis has a losing career record vs Serena (their last ever match being in March 2002 when Serena was still only a 1 slam winner and Hingis already a 5 time) and a virtual tied one with Venus.

Didn't annihilate a somewhat rejuvenated, past prime Seles Hingis once in a RG semi. I saw Serena as a more athletic version of Seles, who played a game, that was more powerful than her body. Nevertheless the fire and heat, Seles could turn on, was the highest this side of Jimmy Connors. Nobody could hit the returns so fast and so far inside the court. Sure, Serena has over a long stretch the better serve, but i saw Seles beating Graf at Melbourne, suddenly serving aces in the bündle. Seles' game wasn't made for grass, thats certain, here Serena would have an edge.
