Mistiming serves more than timing them.

    Hi everyone, first post here.

Ok, I have been playing tennis since I was about 10 (38 now), played to a reasonable standard but never really had a great serve. Over the last few years I haveen't played much at all, but started to play again this summer and am really struggling with my service timing. I have tended to throw over my head, so have tried to rectify that but I still seem to mistime most serves. It seems to be that I connect towards the top of the string bed.

Obviously without actually seeing my serve this could be a difficult question to answer, but what would be the most common reason for striking the ball consistently higher than the sweetspot? I am guessing either not getting up enough after my knee bend or maybe throwing the ball too far into the court?

I am going to try and get access to a video camera so a better analysis could be carried out.

    Any thoughts/ideas appreciated.

    Cheers

    Rich

    Try different cures.
Toss really high, like old IvanLendl, and wait for it to come down.
Too really low, like old RoscoeTanner, and hit the ball at it's zenith.
But most of all, practice and hit some serves.

The biggest problem is not staying on the ball long enough. I suggest you try this the next time you play... worry less about hitting the ball hard... and concentrate on just hitting the ball in the center of your racket. Try and keep you head up and on the ball as long as possible... (center the ball on the racket).

just practice, unless you have a technical error somewhere in your serve, the only thing you can do is hit serves!

Thanks for the suggestions, I guess, as you have pointed out, that I need to hit more serves. Hopefully I can get back to just timing it, as it is definitely hurting my arm & shoulder!
