The Arizona Open is this weekend at the Village Racquet Club in Phoenix. Play starts Thursday.

Although there is prize money to the top 4 finishers, the tournament has still attracted several juniors, including a couple of the top local juniors.

The Men's Open has 57 players including a couple guys currently on the Futures circuit, some former Davis Cup players from South and Central America, some former and current college players, and, as previously mentioned, several juniors.

If you need something to do this weekend, come out to the Village (near 44th & Camelback) for what promises to be some high quality tennis.

sounds like a good tment for some top juniors to get some good experience playing with former pro's, etc...

I seriously doubt any of the juniors would accept any money. If one gets that far & wants to play college ball, legally they could only accept up to their expenses for this tournament.

It's been great in the past. As long as the juniors show respect to their older opponents, they tend to be welcomed.

I thought they changed it recently so you could get the expenses for the tourney plus $10000 total for the year?

Very well could be. Field is pretty tough and it's likely no junior players would be in the final 4, although a junior made it to the finals last year.

Yeah if I remember the reason they made that change was so more players would be willing to give college ball a chance.

Please read some of the responses: It's not that juniors cannot receive any money; there are limits.

Why? Because college sports is supposed to be for amateurs. Below is a good summation from an article called "The Amateur Challenge of College Sports" by John Lombardi:

"College sports MUST be conducted with the talent of amateurs who do not receive direct individual payment for their services beyond what is appropriate for school expenses. If they receive more, then they become employees of the university, playing not for the team but for the money. Even if the money is, at the beginning, relatively minor in character, it is the principle that matters. We succeed with intercollegiate sports because we work hard to put only amateur students on the field, we construct restrictions to keep our student-athletes as continuing members of our university, and we rigorously exclude those who step over the line into the professional world or fail to maintain some minimum standard of student status."

Too bad it won't count at all on his ratings, adult tournament and all.

I hope his huge posse is not too disappointed at everyone going home early.

Carr just has a big posse, that's all.

And who was that skinny little moppet in yellow?
Shouldn't he be hanging around Bob Cratchet's shoulder, or picking pockets for F a g i n's gang?

(That's Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist)

My, but your teachers should blush.
Lawson looks like a mop top urchin with that hair don't (vs hair do).
There was an author named Dickens and when they make movies out of his writings, the lead kid always looks just like that.

All I'll say about the tournament is on Sunday there was a doubles match that should be mandatory for juniors to watch.

The match was between a team consisting of a former ASU player (really former, like late 80's) who has wins in the juniors over Sampras and Chang and his partner, who won the NCAA Doubles while playing for UCLA back in the late 70s against another team with 2 former KU player, one who got in the 700s in singles and 400s in doubles and his partner who was ranked in the top 1000.

They played doubles the way it's supposed to be played, not the seemingly typical junior method of one-up/one-back or basically 4 guys trying to play singles at the same time. Lots of movement, lots of poaching, lots of well placed serves, wonderful volley exchanges, sick angles as well as exploiting the middle - just an overall outstanding match.

Kids could learn so much from watching the older guys play...
