Monfils blamed a broken contact lens for ending his hopes of becoming the first Frenchman to win the Roland Garros crown for 25 years.

"I couldn't see well, so I tried to put some eye drops in at the beginning of the match," said Monfils.

"Then it didn't work, so I asked the doctor to come on the court. That didn't work.

"I think part of my contact lens stayed, remained in my eye. I managed to take the other part out, but there was one part left."

-- Is this just a case of another sour loser syndrome? ;)

I'm not sure what his refractive error is, but as an optometrist, I know lasik isn't for everyone. Oh well he should have had me there. I'd of rolled my slit lamp down onto center court and taken a look. We're used to having to work fast.

I can't imagine that dust in the wind being very contact friendly when you're holding your eyes open and pursuing the ball. I'm surprised we don't see contact lens problems more often.

Um, couldn't he have just put another contact in? I'm sure he's wealthy enough that someone could have played fetch for him...

This post is bogus. Nowhere did he blame contacts for his loss. He just said he was bothered by them in the 1st service game. don't twist the guys words and try and make a story out of it.

Sure, but he could have gotten some dust under his contact and caused some scratching or irritation that might feel like a piece getting stuck in his eye. This could have caused enough reflex tearing to reduce his acuity, but more likely the general discomfort could have made concentrating more difficult. He may have needed more help than just putting another contact in.

To be honest to Monfils he is an emotional guy but very friendly and fair. I am not sure he is blaming the loss on the problem we're discussing right here but it might have had something to do with the first set he lost easily. Anyways if it had or not, he lost the match and to a better player so this thread would go much further with a different title - like Monfils explaining eye problems or anything apropriate.

Ouch, I feel for the guy. That happens to me all the time. I remember not being able to see at all out of one eye in a juniors match a couple of years ago. I got beat pretty badly.

I'm not sure really so don't hold me to this, but it doesn't seem like a completely outlandish claim. It was a windy dusty environment. That's not a good place to be wearing contact lenses. Perhaps he has dry eye and when you compound that with the wind sometimes (a soft high water content lens) can stick to your lids and tear when you open wide.

It seems more likely to me that he got some dust or a foreign body in his eye and it felt like a piece of his contact stayed in his eye.

Either way, dust particle or broken off lens, he may have needed more treatment than just a few artificial tears. Even a single in turned lash can scratch your cornea all up if you don't have a way to pull it out. And it's hard to do that unless you were able to get him behind a slit lamp (microscope), which I doubt they would have allowed on court.

^^ Djokovic has contacts and was lucky to avoid such problems but I can add to the discussion because I remember him having problems on hard-courts when something got into his eyes and messed up his contact lense twice in last year or so. It can happen make no mistake about it. And when it does its a distraction and its the last thing you need when in a slam match, let alone a semi vs nr1.

I am no Monfils fan but you could quote the rest of what he said, he said it hindered him and he is NOT BLAMING IT FOR THE LOSS.

    Some people...

federer does not need to be in top form to beat monfils....
even without broken contact, monfils is still unable to win the semi...

Along with what he said about lenses, he also said the following with smileys:

"I was pretty stupid on one of the breakpoints. Then there was another one when he came to the net, I tried a passing shot, and he caught it and he played a dropshot. That was difficult for me.

"But those are not dropshots. I don't know what they are, but these are not dropshots.

"His balls were not bouncing up at all. They had a spin effect. I'll ask him to explain to me, because I don't know what these were. "

It's stories like that that make me never want to get contacts. Having something stuck in your eye for an entire tennis match is certainly a hindrance.
