Seems a bit odd. Wimbledon is still 2 weeks away. I wonder what kind of personal matter would force him to withdraw so far in advance whilst he is still okay to carry on playing this week?

Maybe it's a health issue he doesn't like to talk about?

I hate to see this, he is such an unpredictable player to watch. When he is on its lights out. Now when he is off, its something quite different. I hope his “personal” reason is temporary and not anything serious. Good luck Monfils we will miss you.

It seems a bit odd indeed. Unless he has got something personal against Wimbledon? Like Serena has got some issues with Miami and will never play there.

But this is Wimby of course.

You're thinking of Indian Wells. She won Miami this year.

He has specifically said he has a personal issue that is conflicting
with the first week of SW19 - strong guess is its a medical issue with
his mom or dad - both have had health issues in the past. He also has spent
a great deal of time in Gaudeloupe recently as well with family.

No that would ban him for more than just SW19. What is so hard to get that he has a conflict during week one and has to bag his WC he asked for.

Who knows? Maybe both parties agreed the suspension would start at W. We will never know. What kind of top player puts anything above playing a grand slam? That makes no sense to me.

Of course but what family issue could possibly stop an elite tennis player from playing a slam and why is he being so secretive about it?

If this withdrawal is due to a medical issue of a family member it is not his place to bandy it about in the press without said family member’s permission.

If he fail a drug test, we would have been yanked from his current tournament.

Wrong country and wrong sport for an athlete of his talents.

He should have moved to the US and tried out for football.

Did you miss the Legendary and Infamous/Famous (depending on how one perceived it, I saw it as the latter) thread of F1Bob. That started it all. It was so influential that I myself and the rest of the enlighthened crew jumped over the bandwagon..............

That aforementioned thread has been sadly deleted.....

    What Backbored said.

Obviously, cc0509 does not see family as a priority above a Slam. Very sad.

Fair point but if I were said family member, I would not want him to stop playing Wimbledon just because of my medical condition. I would want him to go on playing and tell him that he would be supporting me best by doing so! I think most family members of players in that situation would tell their loved ones the same. Djokovic continued playing earlier this year even though his father was seriously ill at the time and Lukas Rosol continued playing a tournament a few months back even though his father had died. He won and dedicated his victory to his father!

I think there is something else going on here and it may relate more to his own health situation than to any of his relatives.

Not if I am a pro tennis player who lives for playing the slams! Unless somebody is dying in his family, missing a slam makes no sense for a pro tennis player who has a short shelf-life. Just more reasons why Monfils is and always will be a bit of a clown.

I was diagnosed with stage lll colorectal cancer two years ago. My family was by my side throughout all my treatments, surgeries and hospitalizations and nothing I could tell them would change their minds. If there is some kind of health issue in his family I’m sure Gael would react just like mine did.

By the way I am cancer free and need just regular test to conform if it has recurred.

Well call me confused in this article he says….
    http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/12/monfils-soaring-on-the-grass-will-miss-wimbledon/

But he said Wednesday that he was feeling 100 percent healthy and the best he had ever felt on the grass, a confidence he wanted to prove with his leaping.
Now he just had a win over Jan Hernych today. So he is still in the tournament but has withdrawn from Wimbledon.

Yea like how Borg, McEnroe etc....all skipped Austraila for years, or Lendl and Agassi skipping (OMG!!!!) Wimbledon - something about being allergic to grass????

LaMonf playing great right now and whatever "personal reasons" are they gotta be important to him and by his recent tweets today pretty big.

Yes this decision is irrational as he is playing pretty well currently at Halle. If he had some bad family news or something he would have withdrawn already. Can't be understood unless there is some anti-doping story involved.

As a fan of his I don’t want it to be anything serious but I don’t want it to be frivolous either. And with him you can never tell. His potential as a top player for me has never been a question, but his dedication and decision making has.

I guess cc509, you have a very different outlook in life than me, as no amount of prestige is more important than health and family. And him picking his family (if that's the real reason) over a tournament that he can join next year does not make him a clown. I will actually respect him even more for that.
I hold family and health as the 2 of the 3 most important things in life. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Now, if he quits Wimbledon to play poker, then that would make him a clown..
