Did a charter for stripers out here last year with four friends.....ridiculous out here, reeling in one after another non-stop while the mate keeps baiting the hooks. More tiring than tennis.

Fedoras are for just down the road in the Hamptons; Montauk is more working-class, which is why my wife prefers it. Staying at a place called Montauk Manor, which I would recommend if you come with your own tennis partner; three hard courts in good shape surrounded by lovely shade trees, not used very much. Courts are layed end to end, each fully fenced-in. Plenty of beaches and restaurants nearby.

Have you tried surf fishing for striped bass? I here it is the best place on earth for that type of fishing (Baja Mexico for rooster fish being the other), either with surf rods or fly rods. Every surf fishermen, most especially west coast surf casters like myself, wants to take a pilgrimage to Montauk.:)

I thought I had read something that "hipsters" (which they labeled "Fedoras") were invading Montauk and the locals weren't happy.

Hipsters? I saw quite a few time-warped hippie types who are probably greeted with groans of recognition in local ERs.
