Well the draw seems a bit tricky to me. We might be having a lot of surprises again. Almagro is playing well on clay, Nalbandian could give a hard time to Nadal, Gaudio might wake up and return to his good old self and Youzhny could give a hard time to Federer.

Acasuso vs. Andreev first round, yummy!

Nalbandian has a somehow good, somehow bad draw: Q, Q, Murray, Nadal.
But I wonder why one of the WC was granted to Thomas Johansson. Not that he doesn't deserve it, though, but it is quite amusing.

Canas didn't withdraw (despite what the BBC says), he didn't get *in*. He wasn't ranked high enough for the main draw, and didn't enter for the quallies.

I don't see anyone in the draw to even remotely challenge rafa. looks like a easy win for nadal.

ToJo is a long-time Monte Carlo resident; I think that's why he got the WC.

Don't most players live either in Monte Carlo or Geneva for "tax reasons?"

I'm wondering why Blake and Roddick aren't in the draw. What's the reason?

Americans have been skipping Monte Carlo for a while. They like to spend more time in the US, and then come to Europe for Rome. Otherwise, the trip is to Europe is too long considering that they stay on til' Wimbledon.

    Interesting possible early round meetings:

    Gaudio v Djokovic-2nd round
    Moya v Federer-3rd round
    Safin v Nadal-3rd round
    Chela v Nadal-2nd round

i dont think federer's draw and potential opponents are too much of a threat to him

right now he is essentially the 2nd best clay court player in the world

    i can see a federer-nadal final happening

I hope our national pride Nieminen will beat safin and face nadal in the 3rd round. Last year he was very very close to stopping the clay winning streak of Rafa.

Very possible. I heard that Fed hates the Joker for his liberal use of the injury timeout. Is this true?

Either way, he's still a former Slam champion...let the guy have his WC, Guazzelli. What, are you upset you didn't get it instead? ;)

Half the pros "live" in Monte Carlo ....at least for 2 or 3 days a year. I don't think there are residency police patroling whether the pros actually live in their apartments, or make them sign in to prove they were in MC. For example, Safin owns a tiny apartment that he rents out.

Djokovicic has a terrible draw. I doubt he will make it far. He will likely get Gaudio followed by Ferrer, followed by Federer. These are all dangerous oponents on clay. If he wins these matches he only gets to the semifinals.

I don't like the way seedings and draws are done for the majority of ATP tournaments. It is always such a lottery. Most of the year you hope that the clay court specilists are in your side of the draw, but during the clay court season your just hope you draw a hard court player. Consider the difference between drawing players such Robredo or Roddick on red clay or fast hard court. Robredo is one of the best player in the world on the slow dirt but really fails to put in many good performances for the rest of the year. Roddick never progressess very far on red clay but at his best is defenitly top 5 material on hard courts and better still on grass. More seedings should take into account the surface the event is played on, like Wimbledon does.

That still doesn't change the fact that he didn't got a direct entry based on his ranking. Maybe he got a WC (which I haven't heard of) but there's no way he had enough points prior to IW/Miami to get a spot in the main draw. The deadline for MC was 6 weeks ago.

What in the unholy earth is Lleyton's excuse for pulling out of this tournament? He could be a decent clay courter if he actually played on the dirt every once in a while.

You still have high hopes for Bags? :p

I can't see him going too far in this event either but you never know :D
This is one possible path to the title and he could go up to R16 against Davydenko but from there it's pretty hard to prevail on clay.

    Mirnyi
    Melzer
    Davydenko
    Almagro/Berdych/Robredo
    Nadal
    Federer

With the Americans out and Tennis Channel covering the event, we should see some great tennis. ESPN this week showed every match of Venus Williams, but neglected the better players.

We don't even know if he is going to face Chela next as Chela is playing with Verkerk as we speak.
