The first masters of the clay season. Everyone looking for an early indicator as to how their favourite player will perform at the French Open. Will Djokovic take the opportunity to lay down the law ahead of his march towards a career Grand Slam? Will Nadal continue his extraordinary dominance of this event? Will Murray finally manage to break through and make a name for himself on a surface that should by right favour his defensive game? Discuss :)

I know its a tad early guys, i just thought I'd post the thread for any Clay court tennis fans to make some speculative posts before the clay season really kicks off :) Specially for the Nadal fans who are probably bored given that their hero chose to sit out miami :)

Would certainly love to see a Djokovic Nadal final, would really make the clay season exciting if Djoker were to kick it off with a win :) Quite possible too, especially if he wins Miami, could give him great confidence :)

It started in January actually. Get used to it, the clay season will end in September after the US Open.

My un bold prediction is that Almagro will choke at some point during the tournament. I also think Murray's bad clay form will continue.

Djoko's form seems awful. Rafa all the way for this one (for a historic 9th title in a row, no less )

Agreed, this is Djoker 1.0, right now. But if Nadal's not in his half, I can't see him not making the final.

Djokovic wins a 4 hour match against Nadal that forces Nadal to take another couple months off tennis due to all the punishment of Djokovic running Nadal to the ground. :D

Djokovic is not looking anything like the 2.0 version of 2011 this year. Was lucky in the Stan match in Oz otherwise no AO. Seeing how Nadal won a hc masters series after four years, he should be the favorite to win the clay tournaments, except for Madrid. Unless Mr. Injury makes a guest appearance. Come Wimbledon, I expect Roger and Murray to win the tournaments on that surface and Kneedal to emerge and lose at Wimbledon. Whether to another journeyman or a top player it doesn't matter. But grass is now his worst surface and losing to another Rosol type of player early will not be a surprise. Djokovic overachieved by winning Wimbledon in 2011 and that anomaly will not be repeated.

Monto Carlo is just horrible for anyone to play Nadal. Slowest highest bouncing clay court of them all. Suits his game more than any court I can think of for any other player.

Why except Madrid? No blue clay this year. He will be favourite there too for sure.

As for Nadal's form on grass, bar 2012's slightly freak result, his form at Wimbledon has been almost untouchable - 5 finals and 2 titles plus Queen's since 2006. Not sure why you think Murray (or Fed) has it in the bag at all given recent form.

Nadal's peak on grass was in 2007 and 2008. His 2010 Wimbledon title was not that great. He got lucky with the draw and early escapes. These days he is better on hc than on grass. His peak on HC started later in 2009 and 2010.

Rafael Nadal has already won EIGHT Monte Carlo titles (and consecutive titles too, a record, since no other man in open era history has won that many titles consecutively). And Rafael Nadal is going for a NINTH consecutive Monte Carlo title. And this means Rafael Nadal will also raise the record for most Masters 1000 titles won, but also the most Masters 1000 titles won consecutively. And Rafael Nadal can also grab the record for most titles won 8 times or more (if he wins Barcelona and Roland Garros, he will have won THREE titles 8 times or more, eclipsing the record and leaving Vilas in the dust). It looks to be another magical year for the channel slam champion... :p

Is Isner the only player to push Nadal to 5 sets at RG. So he should be the 2nd favourite, no

Lets just hope Rafa can avoid John in Paris! John is the only guy to take Rafa to 5 sets at the French Open has since beaten Federer on clay!

Nadal had admitted he was lucky to get past big John and that he could not handle his serve! If John is on his game and has a high 1st serve % then Rafas record at RG could be in real danger

    Three wishes for MC'13:

    1. They fix the surface so there won't be a gruesome injury like Benneteau's tumble.

    2. Simon and Monfils are separated in the draw so the tournament can finish in a week.

    3. No prominent player suffers a death in his family during the week.

Instead Djokovic got beatdown by Haas at Miami. So looks like a repeat of the 2012 Monte Carlo Final which Nadal won 6-3 6-1.

Now the question is, who can out crazy the other? :)

But to answer the OP. I simply cannot see past Nadal at this event, even more than RG. I think he picks up title number nine here. I just have this feeling he's going to win 10 here in a row.

Courts will be extremely awful, people will injure themselves and retire, yet STILL Madrid will have many more complaints, especially from the top players who will boycott the tournament if Tiriac isn't constructing next year's court out of 76 feet thick clay.

And oh yeah, Djokovic takes this I think.

How come the run away dominant world no1. only won the AO(mickey mouse major, FFS!) last year? He is nothing like Roger from 2004-2007.

Possibly. But after Nadal led the charge against the blue clay, I won't be surprised if Tiriac has the courts rock hard, with the least amount of loose clay on top and uses the lightest fastest balls he can find. Nadal has only won Madrid, since it moved to May and clay, once; Fed twice. Before the blue clay Nadal cried like a girl about the altitude and forced the schedule swap to move before Rome.

Anyone see the potential for a big upset? The draw will obviously be a big factor but with djokovic's form uncertain we might not have the djokovic/nadal semi/final that everyone was hoping for :( Maybe if Murray wins Miami the confidence of winning a masters could propel him to do some damage at Monte Carlo?
