I think Martin Verkerk has to take the cake - who am I forgetting?
You can check
Puerta was pretty obscure too.
Alberto Berasategui. He was sensational on his way to the 1994 final.
Mats Wilander in 82...
I'd have to agree with Verkerk.
It's a biased question because several of the surprise finalists or even winners like Guga or Chang were obscure at the time, but used that performance as a springboard to a top flight career.
andres gomez is pretty obscure to the casual tennis fan though he was a pretty good clay court player. More people heard of him after he beat Agassi.
Andres Gomez was the world number 7 when he won the 1990 French Open, and a tour veteran. I'm surprised that he's not more high profile.
The dude won 2 Italians, 2 Spanish Open and beat most of the big names of the 80´s.Even if he won his only GS championship in 1990, he is a pure 1980´s player, with a great serve, effective sliced and top spin Bh, and arguably, one of the top 5 forehand shots of that decade ( along Lendl,Clerc,Arias and Krickstein)
There are plenty of top ten players who were totally obscure to the general public. Present day we have Giles Simon, if you aksed anyone you know, at work or at college or whatever your situation is, they would have no idea who Giles Simon is. His tennis is totally uninspiring as well so he wouldn't get much sponsorhip deals for adverts etc. But he has been top ten at some point, maybe he is now, I have no idea who's in the top ten besides the top 4, Ferrer and Tsonga.
How about Gaston Gaudio for a totally obscure French Open winner? And Mariano Puerta has totally vanished into obscurity thanks to his 2nd indiscretion after the 2005 French Open final.
Mariano Puerta...he was doping if I'm remembering correctly...I suppose Medvedev and Stich...not obscure players, but sort of - in the context of RG...on the women's side, Zvereva?
I think this thread isinteresting if you consider where the players were when they reached the final or finalist.
AS OPPOSED TO HINDSIGHT.
I mean kuerten was what ..66 in the world when prior to winning in 97 ...how about wilander in 82?
pernfors in 86, chang in 89 and korda in 92
norman in 2000 was actually reasonalbly well known by tennis fans....another name I think is soderling in 2009.
Separate names with a comma.
