as the title suggests i had a thought....has any player ever had to play nothing but 5 setters or something close to that and still win a grand slam?seems painful

Most games lost en route to a Grand Slam final (Open Era) was Marat Safin - 129 (2004 Australian Open). Then Goran Ivanisevic - 116 (1998 Wimbledon), but in both those cases they finished runner-up.

Most games lost en route to a Grand Slam final (Open Era) by the eventual champion, was Goran Ivanisevic - 114 (2001 Wimbledon).

Ted Schroeder played a lot of sets in his 1949 Wimbledon, and 4 or 5 five-setters. And Wilhelm Bungert played (virtually) only 5 setters to reach the 1967 Wimbledon (amateur) final, but lost in straight in the finals to Newcombe.
