Hi i'm 14 so i'm not aware of what used to happen, so in the past when slams like the US had more than one court surface how were matches arranged?

    Jagshemash!

All the courts used for the tournament at Forest Hills were grass for many years. Then from '74 to '77 they were all Har-Tru. The grass courts were just used for West Side Tennis Club members during the two weeks.

They had different surfaces throughout their history, but ALWAYS ONE surface PER tournament. Do not be confused! :)

Actually, it is far-fetched and kind of risky for a high-level event, but I remember a junior tournament or two where they mixed surfaces based on court availability and weather.

I recall some early rounds on a hardcourt at a high school or something, then playing on HarTru courts for the rest of the tournament. Or a couple of matches on a club's outdoor courts, then a rainy Sunday indoors for the semi and the final.
