Assuming Murray finishes the year as #3, it will be the 9th time since 1973, that a player has reached two Grand Slam finals in a year and finished #3. It also happened in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 2003, and 2003.

There have been 9 years where the #3 player did not reach a single Grand Slam final during the year.

Has there been a year when a year end #3 didn't reach a Grand Slam semi final?

The closest I can think of are Djokovic in 2009 (only made the US Open semi final), and Davydenko in 2006 (also only made the US Open semi final), but no one who actually got there without reaching a single one.

Jimmy Connors - 1973 (QFs at Wimbledon and U.S.)
Mats Wilander - 1986 (did not even reach a quarterfinal)

Both were year end #3 and did not even reach a Grand Slam semifinal that year.

There were only 3 majors in 1986.

Moose, of course, but for a world #3 to not reach even a Grand Slam quarterfinal. That is weak.

I could be completely wrong, but wasn't the AO moved from a December to january event, making it not played one year?
