Here's an even more unbelievable headline

"Spain begs Murray to play for them in Davis Cup"

If the tie was on hard, definitely, arguably even as #1.

On clay I am not so sure. Perhaps the captain would be pressed to line him up because of his ranking. One of the singles places would be unquestionably Nadal's. But choosing Murray over Verdasco, Ferrer or even an in-form Robredo or JCF wouldn't be an easy decision, I think.

For the last few years, Spanish DC team has been more about building team spirit than selecting the very best players. That philosophy is what led to things like Nadal playing in the 2004 final instead of the seemingly more accomplished Robredo (who had won Barcelona that year), JCF (coming back from injury/illness but still a solid choice) or even Lopez.

I don't think an outsider would be so readily accepted.

Obviously April fools but Murray would never play in Davis Cup anyway, Spain play mostly on clay and he wouldn't make the team.
