A nearing 30 Davydenko and a washed up Andreev did it but Murray, arguably the best,if not the second best hard courter still can't.Got beaten handily at the USO,put up some resistance in the 3th set today,in vain. How can you guys explain that?

Yeah, it's not like Federer stepped it up big time since the first set against Davydenko.

Murray played his defensive game coming into the match. He didn't take the lesson from his USO 08 beat down.

Co-sign.He failed to close out the 3th set and squandered 4 SPs in the tiebreak.Me think he has a mental block against Fed when it comes to GS.

Or its just that he hasn't faced the same Fed in a master's tourney that he faces in a slam...the determined Fed. He probably developed false confidence in his normal game-plan because of his H2H even though Fed wasn't really taking those tournaments seriously.

Pretty funny. Murray blows Nadal off the court and Nadal can't even finish 3 sets while Fed takes Murray in 3. Meanwhile the Nadal fans continue to say Nadal is better than Murray and Federer. I think Murray and Federer are the top 2 players right now. I'm a Fed fan but I think Murray will continue to pick up his game throughout the year.

Did Federer win it with a briliant shot?

No Murray lost it with another unforced error.

    Dull and pathetic.

Murray can't beat Fed because he is a pusher/grinder/counter puncher. He doesn't dictate and waits for Fed to miss. He can only beat Fed by playing his A game while Fed misses with his C game. End of story.

Federer's level of play in the first round was no where near as good as his level in the finals today. If Roger had played the first round like he played the finals, Andreev would have never had a chance to win a set off him.

Did the OP watch the match? Murray was playing his normal defensive game hoping Federer would miss his backhands and lose his patience. Federer without his A-game does both those things but today Federer played his A game.

Thanks for lumping all of us Nadal fans together,we usually all think alike

Murray has better form than Nadal right now but not by much and he is certainly not a better player overall since he hasn't achieved as much up until this point.

Nadal can't seem to get his body in order for long enough at this point. The finals would be more interesting if he could since he is one of the only ones that doesn't melt in a final with Fed. It doesn't seem like he is going to be able to get his knees in the condition he needs to.

I was being sarcastic. And was talking about him stepping it up since the first set against Davydenko, not just for that match, which wasn't that great, but for the whole tournament.. His semifinal and final were just scary good.

so if laver won his slams without hitting the winning shots, should we disqualify them too?

pretty ridiculous post from you. its like federer's play for almost three sets should be disqualified because of how he won the match.

this is a moot point because federer should have won the match when he pulled out the drop shot, he should have nailed the fh and then maybe you would have been satisfied...

whatever...some people will never be happy.

Health wise I think he did pretty well in the last months. After his stupid scheduling in the clay season which cost him so much,he took a forced break and after that played 6 months on hardcourts which screw up his knees so much. He was fine physically(no knee pain) but has(had) a long way to go game wise, not to mention mentally.

His injury in the murray match was bad luck. He basically stepped badly on a dropper at the end of the second and his knee gave. You can see him clutching it a few points later and as the second set ended and the third began Nadal hit one shot on the fh side to make 15-15 and he called a trainer because he felt pain. It is a different problem from the one that sidelined him from what I've heard.

Andreev and Davy got sets off of Fed because they were hitting harder. Murray started doing better after he started hitting harder.

  19. Nadal has had a batter career, Yes (so far)
But imo Murray has a much bigger potential and bigger game than Nadal will ever have.

This is interesting, and just tells you about matchups.

Murray seems to think that you need to play the opposite way a player plays to beat him. Nadal plays behind the baseline, so Murray plays aggressive. Federer is aggressive, so Murray plays defensive. It's a little bit too simplistic.

I was shocked at how passive Murray was. Man I would have rather seen Davydenko take Murray's place again.

Murray really needs to start to play more aggressive tennis if he hopes to win a slam.

Perhaps. He's still 11 masters,6 slams and one Olympic medal short.

BTW,Safin had potential,Nalbandian had potential and look how they turned out. And out of this current generation djoker has made it into two slam finals just like murray and is still stuck at 1 slam while murray has no slams so far.

Murray has improved a lot but as evidenced in the final, once he needs to step it up against the very upper echelon of tennis,he plays passive tennis again. I suppose he could wait until Roger is really old or retires to gain big titles cause he is a very good player and matches up good against Rafa,Djoker or DelPo but again,he needs to be aggressive. Unlike Rafa he actually has a serve and flatter HC shots but doesn't bring them to the table. Right now Rafa has better HC results than him and that is saying something considering the spaniard doesn't have a good HC game.

Murray is potentially bigger than Nadal, but he will suffer from the fact that Fed is no longer in a lull like in 2008, which is how Nadal was able to break through. All roads must go thru Fed.

Nadal had 3 slams before 2008. I'd say he had broken through.

Federer is a better player than Nadal no doubt about it! That doesn't take away from Nadal being great and having to beat maybe the greatest player of all time to get his 6 slams!

Murray has alot of potential I dont think he is the better player over all when compared to Nadal far from it but who knows how he will continue to develop!

But if Murray is to beat Fed in a slam final he needs to turn it up a notch in the aggression!

I agree, on clay only. The other 2 he got because of Fed's lull. He really should have only 4 FO by now.

Here's what you don't get. When Fed is not playing his best, he still gets to the slam final and since not playing his best has the potential to lose to a great player like Nadal. But when Nadal is not playing his best, he does not get to the final and this dramatically skews the h2h. Proof? AO2010. No guarantee that Fed would have beaten Nadal, but my bet is he would have spanked him. Circumstantial evidence? Fed creamed Murray, the player who destroyed Nadal.

    10 char..

Nadal's matches in AO 2008 and 2010 were total beat downs.. he tried his absolute best and yet failed.. which should tell some thing.. He never had chance with tsonga.. tsonga just blasted nadal off the stadium.. murray, though less in magnitude.. did the same.. he played darn well.

Now that time has passed this pic above is actually very, very funny. But hey Fed is going strong and Nadal is dropping in the rankings. So even though he can't get his revenge face to face he's still getting it. I'm still rolling about the pic. Fed wanted it so bad but Nadal took it from him.

I was just answering to the guy who said that Nadal had bad results at AO 2008 and 2010 and accidentally forgot about 2009.
And yes, I have great memories like this one
