Mutual Power machines w/ linear grippers

Anyone have any issues with their linear grippers damaging the mains while in the gripper and then when you try and tension them next, they snap? I heard that some people put a folded in half business card inside the linear gripper to prevent any string damage. Is this a good idea or unnecessary? How can I check if my linear gripper is damaging the string? Just recently I have been having trouble with a copoly string (Hurricane Feel) snapping in the middle mains while stringing and I think it could be due to the linear gripper. Should I use some sandpaper to smooth out the inside of the gripper or will that ruin it?

thanks

Hi Jack!

Did you get your self the Mutual Power stringing machine with the Linear Gripper?

Can you please post your thoughts on this machine?

I'm planning of buying it. I was looking at either the Hercules 690 (Linear) or the Hercules 750 (Rotational). Both have the 'Unidirectional Clutch'.

Yes I got the 690 and love it. I think Linear gripper is definitely better/easier than rotational. My only complaint about the machine is that the fixed clamps are a bit hard to lock and unlock.

Wow!
Good to hear that you're linking the H690.

Had another quick question for you...
So, I might probably string about may be 2 times a month (max!) for now.

You mentioned that the clamps are a bit hard to lock/unlock. Would that be a deal breaker? Had you have known this, would you have gone for a different machine? (I was considering the Gamma X-6FC, may be, if not the MP).

Also, I read another post by you about the linear gripper may be damaging the mains...and it was snapping for you? Are you still having this problem?
Do the strings ever slip with the Linear Gripper?

So, yeah...I'm just looking for a machine that'll help me string may be 2-3 times a month. I don't need it to be super fast or anything. Will the 690 suffice?

Thanks!

I only had breaking issues with one particular string (Hurricane Feel). Never had any issues with dozens of other types of strings. The strings rarely slip with the linear gripper.

The locking/unlocking of the machine's clamps aren't a dealbeaker. You probably have to spend quite a bit more to get the more "self-locking" clamps that don't take as much manual effort.

The 690 will suffice for your needs nicely.
