I think we should simply issue an invitation for this guy to come and return your serve in person, with the video rolling. ;)

A 112 mph first serve with action is HEAT.

I would like for "metsjets" to take J up on this. It should be easy for him to prove his claim that if Drak serves that fast, then his serve must be 120.

^^Eh...I dunno, I played from 4-17 years old, blew up my shoulder and couldn't play for 6 years, spent the last year+ getting back something that resembled strokes, and this is my first year playing open.

I am ranked highly because I play lots of tournaments, and am a very streaky player. So on any given day I have about even odds of splitting sets with a D1 college kid, or an old man at the park :)

If I am playing well I go through the draw like crap through a goose, if I am playing poorly I am out in the first round.

I really need to play this whole year, and I should be in good shape, have a good read on what I have, what needs work, and see where I end up ranked to get some serious goals.

I bought a samsung sports camcorder last month, and am dying to try it out, and see myself on video, so one day soon I will set it up. If the video looks good I will post it so all of you can say I am a 2.5/3.0 and my footworks sucks.

I may have made a mistake with the sex of my averages, but i am still not overawed by Draks videos of his so called big serve. His serve would want to be effective in a match, as the rest of his game is anything but impressive.
I love how many times he posts photos of his 'trophy position' (hehe) and trys to show off to all the youg beginners around here. They must be impressed!!. If i had the resources i would love to post some footage of myself playing. Maybe one day. I would love to come to florida and mix it up with you guys, send me a plane ticket?

Cool, I feel that it is pretty much exactly in line with what I felt actual speeds were.

Nothing compares to the looks on peoples faces when they ask how fast a serve you just hit was, and you tell them "About 70" and then they ask how fast you can serve and you say "About 115".

I'll post some videos of my serve and speed if someone wants to UPS me the radar gun. Maybe someone can set up a paypal rental thing or something. I would buy one now, but my wife wants me to wait until my birthday so she'll have something to get me. I'm hard to buy for since I rarely actually want anything. :)

^^ Hey CC what are you gonna do now that TW doesn't have Isospeed Pro anymore? Is that other one they have now supposedly similar? I wanted to try the Mojo setup, just for giggles, but didn't want to order the new stuff if it wasn't similar.

    JR,

Greetings! Hope you are hitting them well. ;)

Someone told me that Head Rip Control is VERY similiar to Isospeed Pro, so I picked up some today and left two frames to be strung (including one of my brand spankin' new Asian K90's!)

I will post a report in the K90 thread soon!

I am hitting horribly, but just got a new stick that injected some enjoyment into my game.

Head RIP Control...I don't think you will like it. I plays horribly, no bite no nothing for the first little while, then once you knock the slick off of it it plays decently for a while, then it is lackluster for the duration of its miserable existance.

It is a mediocre string with fairly good durability, I reccomend it for good hitters who need durability, but aren't quite up to Kevlar or Poly standard. Second class string breakers. I mean it plays, OK, don't get me wrong, but I think you will find it wanting. Let me know your review.

    Hi Jolly,

I played Head Rip Control x's with Klip Nat Gut 17 g m's today in the Asian K90and it felt pretty similiarly to Isospeed Pro, but clearly with less 'bite'-you are dead on concerning that issue.

Anyway it is nice to see people posting videos here.

yeah, the net was messed up. I had to place a 3 foot stick in the middle to keep it at the correct measurement. Since that time though, the courts have been completely remodeled. New nets, posts, fence, wind breakers, etc.

PS: 5000th post for me. Now a Legend of the TW boards.

    First things first... congratulations LEGEND...

Don't mind them dogging you... they're just jealous they can't afford a speed gun... hehehe just kidding you all...

Why don't you try shadow serving (without the ball) and follow-thru to the othe side... muscle memory works everytime... worked for me... maybe you'll get to 120... hohoho

if you're serving 100+... maybe mine's up to 110+ with my PDR... did you try serving with a PDR... Mine looks more fluid than yours (not neccessarily better) imo... Got me curious about my service speed... i'm younger too, but not too young...

Nice videos... if you place the speedgun nearer you maybe it'll read 120...

Actually, does anyone know where a speed gun is supposed to be placed to get the true speed of a serve? Where are speed guns placed at tennis tournaments and at what point of the journey of a serve is the speed measured?

    Greetings Drak,

I've been using it my last few hits, but got frustrated trying to return my buddy's fairly big serve yesterday morning during a practice session for our Thursday league match. What I'm finding is that I really seemed to have 'grooved' my shots with the US K90 and am WAY out in front of the ball (ie early) with the Asian K90, especially on my 1HBH and returns. ;( So today I used my US K90 when hitting with this DI girl I rustled up for a hit while traveling.

So, I guess I will try to have a couple of more hits this week and then post. I am torn, b/c I can really crack the serve with it! ;)

The radar guns that measure the speed of pro serves are fairly far away (although they don't need to be). Kind of like the radar guns that the police use. They pick up the serve speed at contact.

The radar gun I used in this vid picks up the speed when the ball has approached an area directly in front of it (about 3 - 5 feet). So by the time the ball has reached this area it has already traveled over 30 feet.

justin, we have been meeting in North Miami Beach, but also play at other places. Follow this thread if you want to meet up with us.

Ok, so my question is: At what point from the time the ball leaves the strings to when it bounces in the service box is the speed of a serve officially measured? I would imagine it would be after it has passed the net?

On the ATP Tour the guns are positioned so as to pick up the ball immediately off the racquet face, thus the gaudy numbers. ;) Devices like the one Drak used in his video typically UNDER-estimate serve speed by 5-10mph, depending upon where the device itself is placed relative to the server. These machines typically pick up the ball when it passes 4-6 feet in front of them. CC

    Nice info cc...
Just a thought... With the speed gun that close, what if the gun reads the raq speed, especially for net rushers...
    That would be quite fast...
Wouldn't it be faster at the receiving (far)end, with the acceleration due to gravity...
    Just asking... Thanks...

The racquet head speed is substantially slower than the speed of the ball off the strings, even for those with VERY fast swings. The ball begins slowing down as soon as it leaves the strings, so no, the ball doesn't speed up along the way. ;) Best, CC

Jest wanted to pay my respect to drakulie because I saw his video on youtube and thought "If this small, chubby(sorry) dude can serve 108 with such ease i can!".

Last wednesday at practice we had a radar measuring the speed of serves. Obviously i was a the top of the class! "But what speeds was he able to measure??" i hear you asking to yourself.

    Well here it is:

Fastest ball overall: 95.69 Miles/hour (it was 0.5 meters wide )
    Fastest ball in: 90.1 Miles/hour
Average speed: +/- 77 Miles/Hour (Average of measured balls in)

So there it is. Kudos to drakulie.... i must add one thing. I wasn't serving with the PS6.0, which i own. I was using the Prince Graphite Tour 700 (105 sq/i).
I can get a little more raw pace of the PS but it's a little harder to serve with consistent a the top of my ability.

Drakulie i will forever respect you... or at least till i break the 110 barrier ;)
Kudos and Peace... don't let the non-beleavers get into your head.

Bringing it back up. Im not doubting you or saying that you are lying but your motion looked so effortless yet so effective. Is that your general motion or do you serve bombs with a different, huge-r motion. My serves look the same but look like i put a lot more effort into it, and looks pretty much the same speed.
