Tony, I know that you said you used to be a retriever. How did you get yourself to attack more?
Thanks for the e mail. I tried to write you back but it may have 'bounced' (my company was having IT issues recently). I did also leave you a voice mail yesterday. Would love to hit when you are here.
Appreciate the message. I just havent figure out yet what our travel plans are but when I do, ill let you know. It will be fun to see you again and meet Geoff!
Excellent. I will start training now, running wind sprints to keep up with your shots!! Best, BHBH
I am looking forward to meeting you as well. My neighborhood has har tru courts that will be perfect for your preparation. Hopefully BHBH and I will be adequate sparring partners for you!
Local tournament this weekend
Sounds great, ill let you guys know soon when we are coming through and such!
Hi Tony, do you have any plans to shoot a new vid anytime soon? I'd like to see a recent vid, especially looking forward to seeing your "new" serve.
Hey! Yeah actually planning to tape the semis and/or finals of the tournament this weekend. I still have a long ways to go but my form is better than it used to be. Im struggling with hitting flat serves so Ive been hitting hard spin serves and keeping the percentage up at least.
The Victoria tournament put up some of the exhibition doubles highlights. This video starting at 1:46 shows 2 straight points of things I did (red sweatshirt):
Watch the beginning of the part 1 video to see what a 130mph serves looks like from Pat!
Your shot at 2:08 is sweet!
Thanks Tony, looking forward to that Some nice points in that doubles vid you posted, shame it's so short.
Those first couple of serves on the video starting at around 3:00? He's putting those serves on the lines as well. Those serves would ace just about anyone I'd think. Impressive!
Rained all weekend so it was all inside and didnt have a good way of taping, sorry. Shame because today's finals I played pretty good. Sometime this summer though
Actually the part 1 video starting at 2:56
Those are basically unreturnable and 130+
Had a hit today with my pal the DI coach. If you are here a day or two I think we can arrange a hit with Brian Baker. That should be a nice warm up.
Hey BHBH, I have some bad news. Looks like I wont be going out to the tournament in Tennessee for various reasons this year. I was looking forward to it and would have been alot of fun to visit and hit with you and Geoff, but it wont work out this time. I start my new job that Monday morning and its a long drive, plus it would mean alot to some state tournament players if I came and watched them that weekend back home. Hopefully I'll see you sometime soon though.
Next tournament will be the sectional us open qualifier, looking forward to it and should be a tough draw again.
Let us know when you're playing there, I was thinking about going to watch the qualies since I'm cheap.
No worries! The offer stands if you earn a birth in Atlanta! Best, BHBH
US Open sectional draw up:
Got a tough Gopher in the 3rd round, lots of good players in the tournament too.
Good luck, man. Will you for sure go to nationals if you get through this year?
For you, I wouldn't be worried about the Iowa players in the draw, especially your 1st round opponent. Don't know if that makes you more calm or nervous, lol.
Interesting to see some more MN locals and top level HS players in the field this year (Tobias Wernet & Phil Arndt from the gophs, Wyatt McCoy, Eric Freuh, etc).
Tyler Cleveland in the semis is in Iowa I think, he was ranked in the 300's a few years back. Played for the Hawkeyes too I heard
Yeah, you're right. I saw "fairfield/Ottumwa" on the draws and didn't think much of them. I think another junior or recent HS grad is playing in it from there, so I didn't think too much. I haven't seen Cleveland play in person, but his stats are pretty impressive.
Looks like a tough draw - I have no doubt that you'll do well though Tony.
I wish I could make it to an early match, but alas....work will take priority.
Easily one of the smoothest-looking players out there, even tho he is 6'4". Hits flat, serves big (but goes for pin-point accuracy rather than all-out pace, ala Fed), and beat Luis Horna (who beat Fed in the 1st round of 2003 RG).
I've hit a couple balls with him and even talked to him about his deal with Pro Supex. From what I can remember, he used a stock Ti-80, maybe a smidge of lead in the handle.
Tony won his first round pretty easily (6-0,6-1). Next up is a kid who currently plays #1 at Creighton. Pretty good opponent, but would expect Tony to prevail.
Tony won his match this morning with an impressive 6-0,6-2 score. Next match against #1 Gopher Tobias Wernet this afternoon. Should be interesting.
Nice wins for Tony. Where in MN is this being played?
Baseline Tennis Center. Looks like Tyler has had an easy time of it too, will play the winner of Wernet/Larson in the semis (granted he wins his next round). Surprised Treat Huey didn't show, and neither did the young southern Iowans (not that they woulda made too much of an impression on this draw).
Thanks guys, went well today. I rallied from 0-3 down in 2nd set to win 6 straight, 6-4 6-3. Tyler Cleveland in semis tomorrow. Treat Huey didnt make the tournament because he qualified for Wimbledon doubles.
Ah, gotcha. Good luck with Tyler, you can take solace in the fact that he hasn't done much (if any) high level competition in the past couple years.
Go get 'em TonLars!
BTW, when did you switch to the PDRGT? I assume this is the Pure Drive "Roddick" w/ GT technology?
Very nice win Tony! That's impressive that you took out the #1 U of M player in 2 sets.
Today I played really well overall other than my serve at times, and was able to win 7-6 6-1. Tomorrow is the final against 2 people ive hit with many times. I was able to film the match with Tyler so I will try to post that soon. Thanks
That's awesome Tony! I'm interested to see how Tyler was playing...
Do post your video, would be good to see.
Looks like Tonlars won without dropping a set! Pretty impressive.
Played some of my best tennis ever first set today and won 6-2 6-4. Cant believe I won the tournament, had been in a slump this spring, switching racquets, hurt shoulder, trying things on serve, etc, but put it together for my best tournament win ever. Definitely going to the national playoff this year, will be a very fun experience! I filmed the final and will post the 2 matches up sometime in the next few days.
Tony, you da man!!
Congrats! That's seriously incredible! Now go win Nationals, then the qualifier for the US Open!
You really should rename this thread "My victims (5.5+) if interested"
Does anyone have info on what players will be at nationals?
Some of the same as last year, some very good players. But im looking at this list and, honestly, I dont see anyone on there yet that I cant beat if I play my very highest level. Should be alot of fun no matter what.
I saw some pictures off of the USTA NORTHERN facebook page and you are back to your old head racquets? What caused you to switch back? Sorry if this has been discussed
Yeah just felt like I play better with them, and Ive been doing much better since going back I think
Btw since your here. What did you think about Dusty beating Wyatt at state? Also do you think Nelson has improved since last summer?
Dusty played his very best, and he had to. He has improved a good amount since last year up to now. Better patience, consistency and quickness. Wyatt was hitting a little short and was nervous, but Dusty was the aggressor and took it to him. Usually Wyatt beats about everyone with great speed, consistency and defense, but Dusty wasnt missing and overpowered him.
Nelson has improved alot since he got to Ohio State. We actually practiced a couple times a week before our tournament here, and I admit I was impressed. He had the power before, but now he has added great consistency to go along with his hard and heavy strokes, and good serve.
I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so! Great win pal. Our offer stands to put you up and set up practice here in Nashvegas if you and your dad decide to drive not fly. You guys can meet our two new boys, G. and L. Best, BHBH
Haha thanks alot! I really would like to see you again sometime soon, youve been really supportive of my playing and a friend. If youre ever in Minneapolis we can put you up here too.
And congratulations to you! Tell me more about your boys sometime!
Why are you surprised that Treat Huey didn't show up for a tournament in Minnesota? Has he been playing a lot of tournaments in Minnesota over the years?
