My theory: Nadal tanked the match.

Yep, you read it right. Hear me out. I assume you watched the Fr.Open closely. Did you see that sheepish, guilty look on Nadal's face when he beat Roger and ruined Fed's run at the Grand Slam? You could see it on Nadal's face that he felt guilty for dousing Rog's flame. I know, I know, you are saying, "yahbut, in that video replay of the 4th set at W, you could see Nadal's limp in that point before having his knee treated." Yes, that is true, but any of you who have played sports long enough, have seen the strange but true situation wherein the player's psychological state leads to the physical expression. Maybe Nadal is just "too nice" of a kid. I don't know Rafa personally, I am not even a fan of his, but I do detect this weird mentality in him.....sorta like he buys into the Fed GOAT hype and feels guilty for messing it up. (btw, I am a Fed fan)

No he doesn't. He wants to beat Roger Federer everytime, everywhere, 0 0 0, if he can. You are simply wrong.

Nadal, more than almost all other tennis players, plays every point like its match point. That's a very very competitive person even by world class tennis standards.

Nadal did not play the last third of that match like he wanted to win. Less intensity than early on. Sorta like he let off the accelerator. Maybe it was just the injury, I dunno. Maybe he did get tired shagging so many of Rog's smackdowns, I dunno.

So isn't great that Fed won another? If you think that he tanked the finals or some weird conspiracy is going on, the past is the past.

look no further than this year's nadal vs moya match at the FO to know that he would never do that.

Seriously, no offense, but this is just ridiculous. Nadals wants to win over Federer, especially on grass. There is not a single player that would let someone else win a grandslam event because "they felt guilty" for the other player and especially when that player is Federer who had won 10 GS's before that and had beat Nadal at slams before. Nadal has dedicated almost his whole life to being able to win a slam, do you really, honestly think that he would give all that up so easily?

People on this board really need to stop being so over analyzing of things...

    Cheers,
    Janne

PS: Sorry if it sounds like an insult but I´m just merely trying to point out how stupid it would be for your theory to be right.

i think you never played competitive tennis and have not gone over the so-called "sociable doubles", where you let your boss win, because he pays your salary. no pro would let any other win for whatever reason (unless you have to pull out because of an injury) - this does not mean that you cannot feel for the guy whom you just beat, like eventually at rg.

Understand the topic of my post. It isn't about Fed at all, he has his own mental monkey on his back to carry around...(you know, mentally fragile, lack of experience playing anyone who can jack him around the court like Nadal does, stubborn unwillingness to change his tactics, improve his volley etc). This post is about this strange facet of Nadal's psychology that has become evident. Anyone out there with a professional psych background who can add color?

Nadal wants to dethrone Federer and he is closing the gap on grass against Federer more so than Federer is closing the gap against Nadal on clay (despite the Hamburg result where we all knew Nadal was fatigued).

Nadal plays every match like it is his last. Tanking the Wimby final would be stupid. Don't you know what winning the Wimby over Federer would do his reputation especially the idiots who still consider him a one surface wonder?

Maybe he felt guilty about progressing that far only because Youzhny was told to throw their match.

Well if that's true. Federer didn't play any of the match except for the last few games like he wanted to win.

I do have a psych degree with honours, and seriously: No, it's definitely not part of a professional athlete's psyche, especially someone who has a will to win like Nadal's. And whatever strange "theory" you have on him tanking the match cannot be supported by any evidence other than mere "observation and speculation".

I still remember the Wimbledon final from 06 - Rafa's first taste of the greatest stage. He looked shocked that he lost. It was amazing - he was a 20 year old playing the king of grass and he looked like he was in disbelief.

There was less shock this time around and more disappointment. Rafa gave it his all, but Federer played incredibly well in the final set while Nadal lost some of his movement.

Rafa has a strange tendency to also like tanking vs. Blake, Youzhny, and Berdych. I guess he doesn't want to ruin their records either. lol especially when Berdych shushed the crowd at Madrid.

Using that kind of logic I assume that McEnroe won the first two sets of the FO 84 final, then decided to drop the next 3 on purpose because he wanted Lendl to win his first grand slam tournament and avoid being disappointed again.

Welcome in the real world...This might be a situation encountered in lower-level amateur tennis, but NO ONE, in ANY sport can be a professional, international player, with that kind of feeling. Federer is also a very kind guy as an individual, but he never hesitates to kill his opponents, he didn't hesitate bagelling Roddick in the Aussie or double-bagelling Hewitt in 2004...if he felt this way, he just could not be a champion.

you are either trolling or you do not know that much about tennis. if you think rafa would tank any match--you really know nothing about the sport. he had five days to tank against soderling and he could have gone home....

    ridiculous trolling, amigo...simply ridiculous...

If he tanked the Wimby final...then he should never be allowed on a tennis court in a professional environment again. If he tanked the match, then every tennis fan in the world should be allowed to kick him in his wedgee as hard as they can. You sound as if you are a Nadal fan, but I don't think any true fan, of Nadal's or of tennis would seriously consider him tanking anything.

To Take a quote from John McEnroe. YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!

I mean, come on, of all the things to accuse Nadal of, you pick throwing a match. He's got to be one of the biggest if not the biggest competitor on tour. If he spots that his opponent has devlopment an injury during their match, he will start playing things that his opponent will have a tougher time getting from the injury. Drop shots come to mind. Heck the commentators mentioned this at least 3 times, that Nadal doesn't have much mercy. And it's not a bad thing, heck it's what everyone should do in that situation. This is a competition, and he is fighting to win each time he goes out.

This is also the player that I've heard several commentators make the statement, that Nadal could be down 1-5 or up 5-1 and he plays every point like it's match point, or an extremely important point (as both descriptions have been used)

My theory: You're on drugs! ;) LOL

Nadal is the most competitve guy in pro tennis. He never gives up. Like the raging bull on his shoes, you'd have to shoot him 10 times to stop him from charging. He would NEVER tank.

And Nadal tanked Hamburg so Roger could have a three - peat, and Federer tanked FO so Nadal could have a 3-peat, and Nadal tanked Wimbledon so Federer could have a 5-peat. But just wait til next year when no one tanks anything.

Oh no, I shouldn't have said that. The wheels will be turning in some minds.

    Turning, turning, turning....

Winning Wimbledon the first time for an already successful player is probably worth in excess of 10 million in terms of all future returns, esp. for a clay-court guru. Even if it's 'only' 5.... it's not like Nadal is short of a dollar.
