I'm not sure this needs a thread. But since Nadal has already qualified (and ended the year at no 1) and Berdych needs to win this match, it could get interesting...

I'm sure Rafa will want to top the group to avoid Novak so I'm sure he will come out all guns blazing
Rafa is two moderately tough sets

As the poll shows, Berdych is the favorite in this match. It's indoors and Nadal isn't playing that good whilst Tomas was unstoppable against Ferrer.

Stan almost beat Nadal. Nadal was lucky in that match. I don't think he will be that lucky again. Not against Tomas Berdych.

Nadal will need to play at a very high level to have any chance. He's gonna have to serve very well, play sensibly from the baseline, and pray Berdych has an off day.

Don't worry Capy, your boyfriend will help you out with your poorly hands.

    He will also give you this for getting end of year No.1;

You are right. After all Birdman is a 13 time GS Champion, and leads H2H. ;)

They don't call him the Birdman for nothing. It's going to be a big challenge for Rafa against Tomas.

What time is the match, by the way? Anyone? Thanks.

Berdych. No one beats Birdman 16 times in a row. NO ONE.

Seriously, if there's anyone that CAN beat Nadal out of this group it's Berdych. This is Nadal's worst surface by far, he's clinched #1 and Berdych needs this match, plus Berdych has the weapons to do it if he plays well. H2H means nothing here. That said, I still think Nadal will win it in 3.

I don't expect Berdych to give up before he takes the court basically, which I get the feeling some of you are thinking.

Berd couldn't beat Rafa if Rafa chopped both his hands off. He's #1 Rafa fan, remember? One look at his idol and his resolve will melt :) (That's the "Rafa effect" :p )

This is definitely a very good opportunity to beat Rafa!
    Can't get any better one.

I am curious about Rafa, is he too relaxed after he secured his spot 1? Or will he play with less tension and play better that previous matches here?

Nadal easily. The last time they played indoor was still a relatively easy win for Nadal, 7-6, 6-1. It wont be any closer this time either.

If Wawrinka has beaten Ferrer, then by the time they play Nadal will need only one set to top the group. Given that, I could imagine him losing concentration in set two and winning 6-3 3-6 6-1, or something like that. Mind you, 6-3 3-6 6-1 is only barely closer than 7-6 6-1, I suppose.

Where is option for Berdych to give up before the end of the match? That is how their last h2h finished.

So Nadal vs his pigeon in 1 set. Berdych to bow to his master after losing first set.

Berdych and Ferrer should be banned from playing these high profile events. They are equal to two byes to Nadal. Really unethical and unfair to other top players.

This might be the easiest win of Nadal's career. Berdych will have trouble winning points and will probably quit in the middle of the first set like in his last match vs. Nadal.

I am getting a feeling that Nadal will deliberately lose this match to get to #2 in his pool. This way he gets to play Djokovic in SF. He knows that Nole's concentration level could be fluctuating in the Semis. Further, it is relatively easier to beat Djokovic followed by Delpo (no disrespect to Fed) than Delpo followed by Djokovic imo.

    Berdych in 2.

Rafa has to win, to avoid Djoko in semis. So he should be pumped up. Anyways, if Ferrer defeats Stan in the afternoon match (which I think will happen), then Berdych will be through irrespective of result of his match with Rafa!!

Wim, have a great time at O2 :)

Except that it may be impossible for Nadal to get to #2 in his pool no matter what he does since he has 2 straight set wins already.

    LOL at the sig.

ıf ı were Rafa ı would choose to meet Novak in the semis rather than in the finals.( only for this event ı would choose such a thing) The semis with Novak would be a less pressure match unlike the final of the event which he never won before.

Is it? I thought they used H2H but in 3 way tie, I guess it will depend upon number of sets lost.

LOL at my sig's 1st line or 2nd line? I have always respected clarky since she is pinnacle of rationalism, unbiased thinking and oracle like prediction. 8)

This is the full version of TDK's gem.

by the way, with the current WTF format you can still win the tournament after losing two matches. it never happened in the single tournament (i think only nalbandian in 2006 managed to get out of his group with a 1-2 record), but it happened in double in 1995 when connel & galbraith won the tournament (in eindhoven).

    ^i like it.

i wouldn't want it for other events on the tour (like what they tried to do some years ago... and which miserably failed) but i think it's perfectly suited for this year-end tournament and makes it even more special. it also ensures a significant amount of interesting match-ups between top players.

That would be a nice touch for an exhibition tournament (and WTF has that feel of hybrid exhib/tour event anyway) but it's hard to take an event seriously when one can lose as many as 2 matches and still win the event. My gut feeling is that it's unfair.

it's a matter of tastes and colours, i guess. ;)

you can look at it from a different angle as it is the only tournament where you can have to beat the same guy twice !

A lot of people seem to be not giving Rafa a chance here
Here is a few stats to remember:
Rafa has won the last 15 times against Berdych
Nadal has won 2 slams and 5 masters (one slam and 3 masters on a hard court)
Berdych is yet to win a tournament this year

All logic points to Rafa win in straight sets
