When it comes to court coverage and speed of mouvement, there have been very fast players in the past, like Borg, Wilander, Chang, Hewitt, but Nadal beats them all when it comes to mouvement on the court.

I feel this is the main reason of his success, besides his will to win.

Monflis, Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer are the best movers of all time in no particular order.

I think Monfils is even faster than Nadal, too bad the rest of his game is not good enough.

Monfils can't even come close to sustain his speed over the distance.
Nadal can move at the same pace from start to finish.

As i said, of all these players, Nadal is the only one able to sustain the same court speed over the distance of the entire match.

This is how he beat Nole 1 week ago.

Although Nadal is fast, fastest may be difficult to determine. Some people move laterally better, some move forward better, some move smarter and seem to do it effortlessly, some ge their feet moving so fast they seem to blur. I think the thing that makes Nadal's speed so impressive is that when he gets to the ball he can still hurt you from almost anywhere.

That's a factor too. All Rafa needs is to get his racquet on the ball. You can't feel safe no matter where he is or how far off court etc.

what separates nadal from most of the other fast guys is what he can do with the ball when on the run .....

nole has the best movement on the planet at the moment but nadal was the absolute best mover before he started wrecking his knee. nadal was also the fastest one out there but not anymore.

You can engage with him in a 50 shots rally and win it, you'll be exhausted but he will be there ready for the next point.

You win the point, but you lose the battle.

Nadal is the fastest, but Roger is the most effortless mover.

Nadal runs like a 100 meter sprinter. He bends his head downwards when he goes full speed and it's great to watch. Younger Nadal is a lot faster than the current one though.

Nadal may have been faster but Roger has the best combo of speed and footwork IMO. Not saying Nadal has bad footwork. You obviously need great footwork and speed and timing when you run around those backhands to hit a fh, but Roger floats..

    I actually agree with you.

But Roger doesn't have Rafa's engine; he tires over the distance too.
Nadal never tires ( almost): you can only hope to slow him down a little.

    Borg, Blake is faster.

Blake full sprint is better than Nadal.

Correct title would be Nadal is the fastest in Agility....

When it comes to runnning fast and sustaining it over the duration, the closest to Nadal is Borg.

    All the others are overmatched.

I don't think djokovic' top sprint speed is faster than Andy Murray's.

Nadal covers a wider ground than all of them because he stands so far back.

    Not even remotely close.

Many 13 year old kids can run a significantly faster 400m than Murray can.

Of course there is Bjorn Phau. Probably other guys not well known who were faster, but nowhere near as good tennis players.

As i said, there are many fast players ( Arnaud Di Pasquale comes to mind) but they can't sustain it over the distance, and then are burnt out after a few seasons.

Wilander had to stop after his best season ( 1988 ) because he ended up grinding himself.

Coria was one of the fastest, especially with his running slice forehand that enabled him to get to some ridiculous balls from way out of court. Agassi actually said in 2003 that Coria was the fastest player that he had ever played against.

I see no Murray hate in this thread. What I do see is just a realistic statement of fact that rules Murray out of having near world class sprint speed based on the time that he has said himself that he runs the 400 in.

nadal is far more explosive than chang, and stronger on the run both bh and fh than borg.

pure speed is harder to measure...obviously chang, borg, monfils, phau are all contenders.

But nadal can do crazzyyyy things on the run. no player that i have seen has been better on both the fh and the bh than nadal. the consistency with which he can hurt you from anywhere is pretty insane.

people say serve-volley against him work...i saw karlovic serve some crazy second serves with angle, and nadal still got there on the full stretch and whip it by his 6ft 10 frame.

    Yes, i forgot Coria.
He went the way of Wilander, being burned out by his style of play, and i don't count out him doing PEDS, like his compatriot Canas, and others Argentines like Puerta.

Hewitt, Chang, Borg or Djokovic are just as fast if not faster than Nadal. What Nadal has is speed and power, while Chang and Hewitt lack in that department.

Novak clearly isn't as fast as Rafa, and their mutual matchups with Roger shows it.

When in god mode, Roger blows Novak out of the court; he did it at the 2011 french, then for the first 5 games in the 2012 masters finale.

Against Rafa, Roger can't do anything, his cannon shots comeback regularly. Only Rafa has the speed to intercept Roger's missiles.

You can't just lumber all their drug cases into one, as if they were all the same.

Coria proved that nandrolone wasn't listed on the label of the supplement he was taking, and eventually got compensation that ran into millions of dollars.

Canas was cleared of deliberately taking a diuretic. He never tested positive for a performance enhancing drug.

Puerta tested positive for clenbuterol (helps with breathing) and etilefrine (a cardiac stimulant) in two seperate cases of positive tests, the latter following a test after the 2005 French Open final that was publically revealed in December 2005.

So are we going to continue dismissing Rafa's success as being attributable purely to his immense physicality and then simultaneously dismiss his physicality in threads like this that talk about Rafa's physicality?

I think Nadal has the best overall package. He has excellent foot-speed, anticipation, and footwork. It doesn't matter if Monfils or Murray can run faster than him on a track, Nadal covers the court a lot better than both.
