Congrats Rafa. You deserved it. Though super weak year with no murray in sight and old fed playing. You earned it all. Now clinch the WTF to sign it off on a high.

Good to see him trying to bridge the gulf in gap for achievements with Federer. Still 2 more YE NO 1 to go along with around 200 weeks at No 1.

If Roddick, Blake and the boys come out of retirement, and he sees a healthy dose of Haas and Hewitt, he might be able to do it.

Isn't Nadal the first man in history of tennis to get the YE #1 for the third time after 3 years of 'absence'?

(Yes it's quite an arbitrary statistic, but I thought I heard it somewhere)

Not happening unless they change the venue to outside or the surface to a grittier HC (or clay).

the WTF conditions are kryptonite to Nadal's game

No points at the AO. He's probably guaranteed the #1 until at least March, right? 12 weeks or so?

I edited my answer a couple of times to get the formulation right. It's the YE #1 I was thinking about. Nadal was last No 1 in the rankings in the summer of 2011 I think.

Depends on how he does at the AO and if he plays any HC warmup tourneys for the AO.

I'd say at least until March. Then, it may go back and forth between him and Djoko for the remainder of 2014.

Were he to recapture his Cincy/US Opem form, he could do it, but he's certainly not there at the moment. Plus, you never know, Djokovic could be upset. That said, even as poorly as Djoker played at times yesterday, he's probably still the favorite.

I'm well aware of that, but he did look impressive today vs other years. If he fails to win a WTF it would truly be a shame as it shows he's (1) unable to win in a tournament where there is no easy draw and (2) incapable on indoor hc.

Won't happen, Nadal isn't as lucky as Federer.

Unlike Federer, Nadal's prime didn't happen against a bunch of underachievers and weak top players, and his biggest rival isn't a teenager. Nadal has had 2 other all-time greats and one more who's knocking on the door to compete with.

I gotta agree. I feel Djokovic is the favorite to win. Nadal and Del potro co-second to win and Federer a dark horse.

Nadal vs Federer is pretty simple though. Nadal reaches 18 slams. He is better. Nadal ends with 16 or less, Federer is better. All the other conjecture doesnt matter.

It depends on what Djoker plays too. Also, Djoker has to keep winning. He has to win this tournament and the AO just to keep it close. Even if he does those things, Nadal still has a good shot to hold it for quite a while. If Djoker does not win these tournaments, even longer.

Not so simple at all. Nadal with 18 slams, the remaining 5 all at the FO, and I don't rank him above Federer.

I think it's pretty much safe to say it's testament to the latter. It's not like his record (w/l) at WTF is any worse compared to the other indoor events he's played.

Do you think Nadal wouldn't be able to win WTF if it was held on clay?

Don't think is a question of how lucky he is, if he is good he will be able to achieve better numbers independent of his opponents.

3rd year he ends as #1 and only 6th player to have 3+ year ends at #1. Even Borg couldn't do it (The other 5 are Sampras, Connors, Federer, McEnroe and Lendl ) Rafa is in excellent company!

Well yeah that too, I'm just saying that Federer lucked out big time. In his prime his biggest rival was teenage Nadal. Rafa has had it much tougher.

It doesn't show (1) AT ALL.
    And incapable is an exaggeration.
